This final was legendary. Half the world was putting their bets on Cheng Fei (2006 champion), the other half was putting on Johnson (2007 champion). Fei, top qualifier with the most difficult floor of history then (6.6), had fallen on her 4th pass. Johnson was leading with 15.500; behind, Liukin and Yuyian with solid scores. Izbasa was the last gymnast to go and had scored 15.475, 15.550 and 15.500 on previous days. It was possible, if she could hold the nerves and be clean and precise. Exactly what she did. 15.650 and a shinning gold for Romania, amidst a day after day USA vs China battle.
It wasn't a surprise as Sandra was favourite before Shawn and Nastia. Fei was the surprise, but Sandra was the obvious gold medalist contender, not the US gymnasts.
This is legendary, one of the most well deserved gold in the history of Olympics. Highest difficulty, superb execution, sticking all the landings, great music that flows along the routine well. And you can tell that she really enjoys gymnastics and performing on the floor. The smile after sticking the third pass is very sweet. The crowd clap as the music goes and they give her a big applause at the end of the performance. I will never be tired of watching this routine! (Ps. Izbasa is just gorgeous, she looks like a model who happens to do gymnastic. And she is one of the most genuine gymnasts with great sportsmanship too)
She is wonderful. A great gymnast and person. When she won the vault title in 2012, unexpectedly, she graciously told Maroney that she (Maroney) was a better vaulter. And she hung her gold medal around Belu's neck, telling him that he deserved it as much as she did, since he trained her to become a great vaulter for that Olympics. She had previously been more of a floor specialist.
This routine is so unforgettable. I remember watching this on TV 11 years ago when the Olympics was held in Beijing. The Beijing Olympic Committee arranged Vault and Floor Exercise to take place on the same night because Cheng Fei was the favorite to win both events, so China could have a Golden Night of gymnastics. But she unfortunately fell on both. No one actually expected Izbasa to take gold even if Cheng failed, because the two Americans (Johnson and Liukin) were so strong. But when Izbasa, who was the last one to perform that night, stuck every tumbling pass, everyone knew who was the champion. It was just like it happened yesterday.
I see many people claiming that Maroney's fall in London was the most shocking and unexpected, but to me Cheng Fei is the one. Nerves got the best of her.
@@hannibaljustincase9985 Yeah, literally everybody expected Cheng Fei to win gold on vault and floor, especially vault. She literally dominated the entire quad for vaulting, and won every single world championship gold from 2005, but unfortunately, she fell in the EF. She qualified first to the floor final too, and in the final, if she had gotten the score the that she got in the QF and didn't fall, she would have won gold in place of Izbasa. Too bad the pressure of literally everyone expecting her to win gold got to her, especially since those Olympics were held in her home country.
Izbasa's fx was clearly favourite to win gold with Fei's. izbasa had the second highest score on qualification behind Fei and had the highest score on TF, she scored a 15.550 while Shawn scored 15.100 and Fei 15.450. So she was a obvious contender for gold. I think that american media made it seem like a surprise her gold, to descredit a gold that its not from USA, but she was a contender stronger than Shawn and head to head with Fei. Stop trying to make it like a surprise or one day luck when she demonstrated superiority through out the competition.
It is one of the best Olympics in the last decade, especially for gymnastics. The competition is fierce, with varying style of athletes. The 2016 one is extremely boring in comparison.
This Lady had Grace, Beauty and few other things. I'm not into Gymnastics (came here for the Music) but I could watch Miss Sandra Izbasa dance all day!
This routine really makes you feel something. It's weird how it has 5 tumbling passes yet it's still better than most routines with 3 and 4. I wish the FIG would encourage more dancing, add some serious artistry deductions or maybe even extend the time limit, most gymnasts routines are basically awkward dance moves to catch your breath before the next tumbling pass.
I discovered this lovely musical piece thanks to her. It's such a great choice! It showcases Eastern European music and is so fun and easy for the audience to clap along with as it speeds up. I love her move at 1:02 as it basically invites audience to join in.
Magnificent performance. And to the beautiful music of Michał Lorenc!! I get chills every time I watch this routine; Sandra is perfection here. :') Well-deserved Gold!
I love Sandra!! She always had the best music choices. I'd love to see her other Olympic floor routine to Shine On You Crazy Diamond in a future Music Monday!
She was the clear winner. Shawn thought she’d win. But this floor exercise was so clean and filled with so much joy. Shawn’s was just showy. It was rife with self-indulgence. Yeah, some could say it was more difficult. But what good is difficulty when there’s way too much of you and not enough joy of performance?
@@kp395 I didn't know that. No being rude. I agree she should have won. Is it because of all those twists she does in the air? I wonder why the commentor here "R V" thought Shawn was too showy.

Shawn actually downgraded her 3rd pass from a front full front 1.5 to a front full barani and stepped out on her first pass, so Cheng and Izbasa would have scored higher than her by default.
Sandra or any other top Romanian gymnasts were never underdogs until 2012 at floor contests. The title at floor in 2004, the previous Olympics, was Romania's, Cătălina Ponor was the winner. Romanian gymnastics died after 2012. And then Simona Halep and other tennis players took the spotlight. Romania moved from gymnastics to tennis and IT (computer programming).

I would like to see in men's and women's fx that they have a tumble series from each corner a requirement. Why have four corners and not use the four corners? It's not a triangle shape right?

The moment the crowd started to clap along was when I realized what a breathtaking and memorable routine this would be

You are 100% correct and said it beautifully. I wish so hard for Artistic Gymnastics to come back.
She is the last Golden generation of ROM gymnastic empire. I do miss romania dominant.
When she nailed that triple twist was the gold medal confirmation.
I simple love this routine ❤
One of my all time favorite
0:50-1:00 there's something about this part that made this routine feels so majestic. It somehow, sums up what artistic gymnastic is all about.
And that's the beauty we currently barely see . Most gymnasts have little charisma and are focused on sticking tumbling passes.

Agreed! The steadily increasing tempo of so many Eastern European folk tunes makes them perfect for showy floor routines.
I think this piece suites her appearance perfectly. She's like the sun, radiating joy.
In contrast, Ponor has more of a dark mysterious vibe.
Unforgettable routine, such a well deserved gold medal. Sandra Izbasa, a great gymnast and this routine, so smooth , playful and enjoyable to watch.
Magnificent performance. And to the beautiful music of Michał Lorenc!! I get chills every time I watch this routine; Sandra is perfection here. :') Well-deserved Gold!

I love her. She's the last Romanian gymnast to take gold from '08-'12 OG. I'm sad For her federation and happy for her.
Cel mai frumos sol din lume. Bravo Sandra!

Romanian gymnasts were really missed in Rio 2016. I hope they could qualify a team for Tokio 2020
We switched to tennis. No more gymnastics for Romanian women.
NBC’s Broadcast angers me. The commentating by Elfie. Sandra deserved this Gold Medal, there was NO ADVANTAGE OF LAST
Extremely beautiful and talented
