An unbridled blues guitar, main drums backed by maracas and, in lieu of a bass, a stringed gutbucket. Though these elements might seem simple, they're enough for Jaen-natives Guadalupe Plata to light up a recording studio. Originally from Úbeda, this band has just released their second album, which, like the first, is self-titled. According to them, the sound is just as "raunchy" as ever. Recorded over three days last year in a studio in Austin (Texas), Guadalupe Plata's new album hits the road someplace near blues and the Mississippi Delta and ends in a dirty, explosive mix with the ghosts of guitarist John Fahey and legendary bluesman Skip James encircling a southern farmhouse.
"The idea was to convey that demonic possession segregating blues and cante jondo, music that seems removed from idyllic landscapes and is born rather of conflict, fire and unrest", they explain in the promo sheet for their latest work. Their Andalusian sound remains. Yet Rata, the song we're premiering, exudes urgency, sweat and rage.
