Strength in Numbers | Corrie Painter | TEDxWaltham

After being diagnosed with an exceedingly rare cancer, a group of patients found each other in a small Facebook group. That chance encounter led to a series of events that has enabled large-scale​ patient-partnered genomics studies aimed at accelerating research for several cancers, including angiosarcoma.

A trained cancer researcher with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, she partners with advocacy groups and engages patients with metastatic breast cancer, metastatic prostate cancer and angiosarcoma through social media to carry out patient-partnered genomics studies conducted at the Broad Institute where patients can consent online to donate their stored tumor samples, saliva, blood, medical records and their voice to directly accelerate the pace of discovery. Corrie, an angiosarc ma survivor, is also a passionate leading patient advocate who co-founded and serves as the Vice-president of Angiosarcoma Awareness, an organization that supports research and awareness efforts surrounding this

You can never underestimate the power of a group of people with no choice but to fight for their lives. I’m so happy that Facebook was able to facilitate the opportunity for people that previously would have had to fight alone, to instead band together and capture the attention of influential individuals like physicians, scientists and researchers.
