    The Gaur (Bibos gaurus) is a large cattle species native to both the Indian subcontinent and parts of mainland Southeast Asia, it is known for being the largest extant cattle species, the largest extant bovine, and largest extant bovid in the world, it is one of the three extant species within the genus Bibos, the others are the Banteng (Bibos javanicus) and the Kouprey (Bibos sauveli), the gaur has four recognized subspecies: the Pahang Gaur (Bibos gaurus hubbacki), the Myanmar Gaur (Bibos gaurus readei), the Indian Gaur (Bibos gaurus gaurus), and the Gayal/Mithun (Bibos gaurus frontalis), like the gaur, the banteng also has four recognized subspecies: the Burmese Banteng (Bibos javanicus birmanicus), the Bornean Banteng (Bibos javanicus lowi), the Javan Banteng (Bibos javanicus javanicus), and the Bali Cattle (Bibos javanicus domesticus).
