      I too visit these places mostly by internet while sitting on the couch... we are so fortunate to get a good look thanks to Wonderhussy. One amazing thing to ponder is this: there are hundreds and hundreds of places like this to hike/visit in the American West; I mean high alpine valleys that are a lush, interesting 'island world' in a vast desert sea. There are dozens in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and hundreds in the other states. Most have hiking trails and if you have an internet connection, a GPS phone/emergency beacon you too can drive to the nearest road approach, camp there and hike in! There are too many to run out.... not taking them for granted, but just saying there are so many that all of us can see them in some way.
      I have been to Big Sky Montana, Alta in Utah, Death Valley in CA, Boulder and Steamboat Springs CO,, Glacier National in MT (road to the sun) to name a few; I'd love to see the Jackson Hole part of Wyoming and more isolated mountains in Nevada that are surrounded by desert and bypassed by the public... these are lush islands of beauty that anyone can get to and find peace.

    When i was 6-7 this guy across the street picked me up and threw me into his swimming pool. I could not swim. This guy across the street was at Peal Harbor December 7, 1941. Shooting at the planes with his rifle from his barracks he said the Japanese planes were low enough you could easily see the pilots. Half the year, during warmer months, him and his wife Sally, lived in a camper at Lundy Lake. The rest of the year Bill Sims and Sally lived across the street from me here in Long Beach Ca. Bill passed away in about 2003.
    I wore a Hawaiian shirt to his memorial service in Anaheim Hills. Before the service I went surfing. Sally was born in Hawaii. Bill and Sally got married a short time before Pearl Harbor was attacked. Bill told a couple years before died, “Mike as soon I could afford to buy shoes, I left Tennessee.” Bill knew every fishing hole in the eastern Sierra Nevada’s. He loaded gunpowder into homemade bullets for his many rifles(which were stollen in broad daylight from his house[he never replaced]).
    Growing up his grandkids were my best friends since in diapers. I learned to swim. During the summer I lived in the pool he threw me in, with Robbie and Jeff. Everyday for three months we’d be in that fkn pool. Robbie and Jeff with their parents lived another part of Long Beach, but during the summer pretty-much lived at their grandparents. Bill was just another one of my grandparents. My parents were close to the Sims.
    Bill was a submariner in the US Navy. He was hardcore. He told me some gnarly WWII stories. My dad was a medic in the army during the Korean conflict. My dad witnessed some gnarly stuff. I used to see my dad and Bill hanging out talking across the street in outdoor chairs. My dad was upbeat funny guy. When Bill and my dad got together alone it was almost melancholy meeting. Id see them and wonder between them how much suffering and death they both witnessed.
    Bill was a character, he never wore shoes in the neighborhood, always wore an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt. Before moving to Long Beach, the Sims lived in Hawaii. Bill was still an island boy. When Robbie, Jeff and myself got older we drifted apart. Our Mid-late teens they no longer would stay at Bill and Sally’s. My priority became skateboarding and surfing and the friends doing the same close to home.
    Sally was born in Hawaii. I asked her years ago if she had a desire to go back and visit. She said “nooooooooooo. Hawaii isn’t they same.” A couple years after Bill passed the house across the street was sold, Sally moved to Idaho. I remember stopping in my tracks, i without warning I gave a moment of silence, with that lump in the heart feeling when my mom told me Sally had passed away. Sally took Robbie, Jeff and myself when we were about 10-11 years old to see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
    This is when Bill and sally would leave for Lundy Lake half the year. I believe they lived in that resort you spoke of. Mountain Biking Mammoth Mountain in the late 1990s I paid a visit to bill and Sally at their Lundy Lake camp. They were so happy to see me. I hung out with them one evening after mountain-biking. I didnt stay long. To this day I kick myself for not coming back before I left back to Long Beach. I told them I MIGHT come back the next day or before i left. Bill told me months later back in Long Beach they went out and bought a bunch of steaks to BBQ when I returned. I didnt think they’d mind if I stood them up. They were a bit hurt but laughed it off with me, saying it was OK. I still feel bad ha

    On the mine site itself you're pretty safe from anything harmful. It was down by the wooden holding tanks that you don't want to go poking around the ground. The arsenic would have leached into the soil by now. As for the lake, yeah I'd just admire the view and keep my feet dry. But I'd love to dive the old town site! Thanks for trudging your way up to the mine Sarah. You earned that steak! And a martinini sounds pretty good right now 😋

    For those interested in a little more strenuous workout, the Lundy Lake trailhead, a couple miles past Lundy Lake, is an access point to a seldom traveled and beautiful part of northern Yosemite Park. Soldier Lake, Return Lake and upper Return Creek are worthy destinations if you have a few days and a backpack and wish to leave the crowds of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne, and Saddlebag Lake behind. It doesn't have the arsenic problems.

  • @patrickschmid3294
    @patrickschmid3294 10 місяців тому +7

    At around 21:30 you mentioned all that stuff was the big Kahuna and it is. That big flywheel with the interesting tube things is where the main steam engine powering everything sat. Those tube things are the remains of the steam pistons. Arms would have extended from there to the pin on the big wheel so the motion of the pistons spun the wheel. The stuff to the right of that are the various power take offs. Most likely each set of drums represented a single drive belt with the ability to shift it for different gears or to drive different machines.

  • @robertkluck6913
    @robertkluck6913 10 місяців тому +5

    The mill was complete until it was burned down either accidentally or by vandals in 1969. There are shafts and used to be additional structures near the top of the mountain at around 11,000 feet. The large wheel you found near the end was part of an aerial tramway that went to the upper workings.

    Spent many vacations at Lundy with the family. My wife used to metal detect at the old town site. A friend of mine, his wife, and my daughter used to hike up to the old mine, and fish the lake above the mine called Onida. One of the "Pater Noster" lakes above the mine. His wife and my daughter would hike back to camp with our catch, and we would spend the night and catch another limit the next day. The fish were very hungry and would bite on any fly. The last time we were there, a Canadian company was opening up the mine. The workers were staying in one of the cabins. They would carry our backpacks up for us in their trucks but would not give us a ride. Made our hike a lot easier. I fished with an old guy [I'm old now] who knew a miner that worked the May Lundy mine. He would work a 10-hour shift, get a ride down to town and get drunk, sleep a couple of hours and back to work. Had to be tough in them days. The big wheel laying on the ground was a cable wheel for ore buckets. It carried the ore down to the stamp mill that is now laying on the ground. The Forest Service burned all the wooden structures years ago, so all that is left is the iron.
    Keep up the great videos, love to revisit old places I spent many years enjoying.

    The mining claim was patented private property until the late 1980’s, at that time the land owner did a land swap with the forest service for some more accessible land elsewhere. They also may have wanted to give it to the government to avoid having to clean it up. My sons AC me I spent two days there in the 1980’s. Very much enjoyed the video. I have been to Lundy Canyon a couple times and looked up to where the old mining camp was but never had the chance to hike up. thanks for doing that and shooting an excellent video of the site. Now on my bucket list is a return to Lundy and hike that trail. Oh BTW the U shaped canyon is a classic glacier erosional feature. At one time Lundy canyon was filled with a glacier actually several times over the last 150,000 years.

    Your videos have improved by orders of magnitude over the years - it's easy to tell that you put a LOT of work into staging, blocking shots, sound quality, and editing, not to mention selecting interesting places to shoot them. The result is videos that're worth the time it takes to watch them, and that leave the viewer with the feeling of having (virtually) been there! Nicely done. BTW, an N-95 dust mask should be sufficient for just walking around, if you were worried about inhaling toxic dust. Cheers.

      She doesn’t read comments, so, you are wasting your time, claims she doesn’t have time to, although she hasn’t worked a job in many years! How long can she do this, she’s not getting any younger, what is she going to do when she cannot do this anymore, run out of $$, gets injured, climbing mountains in flip flops? Apparently, she doesn’t think about her future life, foolishly lives for the day?

      @@Jeff-jg7jh I wouldn't expect her to read or reply. Comments help the channel's stats. If she publishes a particularly interesting episode, I'll comment on it and often hit the like button as well.

    Our son and I hiked up to the mine about 10 years ago. I used to run trail ultras and the son is a fireman. Damn hard hike, worth every drop of sweat. Thanks for making this episode, loved it !

    That very old old growth redwood that those tanks and bins are made out of is pretty cool. That’s a great video. Yeah I’d camp there. I’m pretty sure that Fukushima has radiated me more than any other toxic site in America so I’m not too worried. Great video.

    Pretty cool place despite the toxicity. Once again, anything in the desert & the mountains is very interesting. Is there a degree that incorporates history & geography because if there is you have certainly earned one.

    Gorgeous location and it is a shame it is so polluted with Hazardous materials. It is on the State list of most contaminated areas. Thank you for sharing your awesome adventure with us. Everyone stay safe, happy 😊 and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia

      There's places like that in Colorado also. They look gorgeous but they're polluted as hell and superfund sites. The mining corporations just destroy it then declare bankruptcy.
