    So is it just environmental concerns that made them improve their fiberglass methods or are the older ones dangerous once they start to chip and wear?

      Not dangerous. The molded ones were introduced in the 90ties and are cheaper and faster to produce than the fiberglass shells.
      Mine is original H. Miller, black fiberglass, Eifel Tower DSR base, cream skyleather (faux leather) with black trim.
      The rubber is gone and the inserts are loose in the shell but won't come out...don't know what would be dangerous about it. The inserts could get epoxied easily.
