With 40 years before retiring it happened to me once. Middle of the winter snow on the ground, I could of sworn it was hooked but tired just spinned. Dropped it as soon as I took off, two drivers helped me and didn't make fun of me, it happens. If people would just help people sometimes instead of filming and criticizing it would be a better world.

Good word Driver I had one happen to me after getting under and doing a visual check( as I always do because I'm paranoid) it as zero weather that morning but it does happen. I just knew I was secured. Like you said some good hearted men got the forklift and we got er done. We're all human and all truckers should stick together.. God is watching !

Here something for you drivers to know. Especially with empty trailers all you do is drop the air bags. Get under and left trailer by engage your air bags again. Remember to left your landing gear everytime. So keep doing this with your air bags use as a Jack. Works with loaded trailers but a hell of work. So please always check.

According to CHP at the Banning scale house 30% of the trucks pulled in for inspection are high hooked, the kingpin of the trailer actually sitting on top of the closed jaws. Scary stuff, make sure the trailer is sitting down flat on the 5th wheel plate, visually check to make sure the jaws are closed, always use a bright flashlight to check. Good video.

The truck drivin school I attended always makes sure that we all double check them fifth wheel, kingpin an the locking jaw thin are lock in place when we hook up the truck to the trailer
It’s been two years since I got my CDL an I still double check basically everything before my drive shift🙃

Schneider PREACHES two tugs and a flashlight inspection of the kingpin/locking jaws. Period. Don Schneider gets a letter every year from a father who lost his daughter because of a loose Schneider trailer out in Wyoming I think it was. That was 1987 I think. The letter reminds the drivers to make sure the trailer is properly connected.

Knowing how hard to back into a trailer is also something that comes with experience. It's not hard but it's just something you need to know. You want to go slow and light as a new driver but you gotta back in a bit rough to ensure those jaws wrap around that pin. Always tug and always visually check under.

Just did this the other day but the trailer fell at the rear of the fifth wheel. I always ,when hooked , test the connection to make sure I’m good. Good thing it was an empty trailer also. But my mind was on something else other than the trailer. Of course a driver next to me started taking pictures, but didn’t expect me to recoup that fast. 20 years driving and nobody’s perfect.

I think that happens to almost everyone at some point. However, usually after 1 time, it never happens again. Part of the pre-trip (which a lot of people don't do because they do the same thing day in and day out for years and years) is to check your connection. I know here in Minnesota sometimes it gets so cold the kingpin latch has to be physically pushed in to latch all the way.

I backed under a trailer that was sitting up too high and the kingpin skipped my 5th wheel and ended up in front of it then I couldn't pull forward again. Luckily the trailer was empty I had to crank on it for a bit to free myself. Yes always check and check again before you commit doing it fast is doing it wrong.

    • @88Petry
      @88Petry 3 роки тому +3

Happened to me before. 3x actually. Keep the air out of your suspension, then get out and push your 5th wheel all the way forward (will take both hands). You will get grease on your gloves but it sure is better than cranking the landing gear.

That's got to be the worst feeling a driver could have. Maybe I was a little paranoid when I was driving but anytime my rig was out of my sight I would always do a thorough inspection to make sure everything was good and nobody did anything. You have to always get under the trailer with a flashlight and take a look. I once saw a driver pull a guy's kingpin while he was inside the truck stop. That was a low down dirty trick. Spent 3 hours listening to an audio book while waiting for the driver so I could tell him what happened.

He needs to give it a little more of a love tap when coupling the king pin that’s his biggest problem I have the same Holland fw35 fifth wheel and if they go a while without proper lubrication, the jaws won’t lock all the way even though it will make the pronounced click it will let go and you will drop the trailer. I always give her a nice bump when I hook up.

I checked the locking jaws and did a tug test. They were locked or I guess partially. Drove out my spot. Going to the turn and wham. Trailer hit the ground. This is a recoverable mistake. Doesn't look like any damage. Use smaller gear crank on landing gear. It takes a little while but u can raise it enough to get under it. Also, dump the air in the drive air bags. Had this happen to me back in the early days. Recovered it with no damage, fortunately. And it was an empty. Was able to proceed to go get next load. No witnesses and company never found out. Lesson learned!

Good job at least trying to help him out and not filming while just talking shit. Can also manipulate the air ride leveling valve to raise then crank gear down if trailer is loaded. Being as its empty, he should be able to crank without having to take weight off. The #1 reason to have a flashlight on hand and in addition to a couple good tugs , visually confirm that both jaws are locked around king pin from under the trailer at rear of plate. Tug tests have been known to make jaws appear to be locked but in reality the only 100% foolproof way is to listen for the click when coupling and then visually look at the jaws around fifth wheel pin and see that they are completely closed around pin. However, refreshing to see someone actually helping a fellow driver and not super trucking or laughing at someone's situation which when it's your livelihood at stake isn't funny.

I saw a video on UA-cam of someone’s dash cam catching a guy just pull up to the fuel bay then walking to someone’s truck no where near the other guys truck and pull his handle while the guy was I assume inside. People should go to jail for doing that stuff.

I've seen that happen. A driver came out of the T/A truck stop one night, and pulled right out from under his wagon. He seemed like he was in a hurry to go too, it busted his pigtail, both air lines, and destroyed the landing gear.
I always figured he might have pissed someone off while inside, but ya never know, there are some real ass hats out there.
Anyway, after that, I started setting my trailer brakes and pulling *HARD* against it, and then setting my tractor brakes. I had another driver help me test it, and both of us together were not able to pull the release handle with that much pull on the Kingpin.
The only time after that where I don't do this, is on ice. I rarely ever set my tractor brakes when it's really cold, or on ice. That way if the brakes on the trailer freeze up, I can still dolly down and leave if I need to go get a mechanic.

Someone did this to me today. I visually confirm that the hook is latched. Came back from the bathroom and almost dropped the trailer-someone had pulled the handle. People are trash, be careful.

Ah shit it happens. I had a log trailer froze up in white river on. Gonna drag it into the shop to change a valve. I dragged that trailer easy 35 yards. I was about 20 feet from the shop door and the wagon fell off. The boss and I stood there trying to figure out how I could drag the trailer so far with the wheels locked up and not have the wagon fall off sooner. It bugged my boss so much we rebuilt the fifth wheel before I went for a load

At least he has a good 5th wheel you can hear it snap shut double collar Holland
If you keep stress pulled against your fifth wheel when you pull into the truck stop set your brakes on your trailer and then pull forward no one can pull your fifth wheel pin still a good idea to always do a double tug test

i use the sequence B L A C K - N Which means to un-couple "B"rake "L"egs "A"ir and electrical lines "C"lip "K"ingpin "N"umberplate then reverse BLACK-N for coupling a trailer, sticking to a sequence always helps and I always do a tug test, I have dropped a trailer due to the kingpin not latching all the way across even though I tug tested the trailer, when I turned right the kingpin pulled through the gap in the latch on the 5th wheel, so it was a mechanical fault, was an empty trailer and I had to wind the legs to lift it off the ground!!!! took me over an hour, one airline stretched to about 40ft LOL I sorted it though!!!! once ya make a mistake ya cant take it back so why worry, what's done is done, shit happens sometimes

When I was driving an I stop any length of time. I set the trailer break an pull the truck up to lock the king pin. That way no one can pull the handle. I am
Retired now.now I have a 44ft 5th wheel toyhuller. To this day before we the trailer do the tug test an check the
Jaw make sure it lock. There are a lot
People that have 5th wheel RV that drop there trailer on there truck. I use to get paid to see the country now I have to pay. LOL. There not to many
Drivers out there that will help. Out
There other drivers. Be safe out there on the road.
