Setlist:
1. NYC
2. Roland
3. Specialist
Interview
4. Say Hello to the Angels
5. The New
6. Obstacle 2
I'm in a band. The drummer really digs Interpol and ask us to cover The New song. I, who is not familiar with Interpol whatsoever, says sure thinking it'll be easy.
I'm the bass player.
you need to practice a lot xD
I already got it XD It was not that hard at the end
This is a song that will make bass players look twice as badass! (If they can pull it off)
Bass in this band is probably like the most important thing
omg i fucking lost my mind playing this song, bass or guitar
This video might as well be titled “Carlos Dengler’s incredible bass lines”
For real. In my top 3 personal best bassists along with Peter Hook
@@iand4374 same. Maybe my #1. Crazy how effortless it seems to come to him. He drove the band in his time with Interpol. I still love Interpol and the recent albums have been good, but Carlos leaving left a hole. Paul has filled in on bass VERY admirably on the recent albums though
@@RFFVNS it's crazy getting this quick of a response to a 2-year old comment. But yes I agree with you somewhat. El Pintor was GREAT but as a giant Interpol fan I find myself making the same excuses for them as you just did(i am trying to say this respectfully). Carlos Dengler's basslines drove the band for for me but maybe im biased because I play bass. Idk I'm drunk
@@iand4374 love Paul's playing on Tidal Wave especially. Love El Pintor. I'm a drummer but play a little bass. Sam and Carlos were a great combo. Sam is also very underrated. Cheers 🍻 I'm also drunk haha
@@RFFVNS lol nice. I have not checked out any interpol past El Pintor, but I will. I havent in fear of it being awful. (I am a huge fan of Modest Mouse and havent listened to anything past Good News out of fear my nostalgia is ruined lol) have a good night bro.
Fucking Carlos was a wizard with the bass.
This video contains:
4. Say Hello to the Angels @ 0:00
5. The New @ 4:24
6. Obstacle 2 @ 10:27
Carlos D was truly out of this world at the bass guitar. I have been a bassist for years and it is really difficult to come up with such creative bass lines. What a talent! We are blessed to have this videos and enjoy them as much as we want
its even crazier when u consider that he had only been playing bass for like 2-3 years by the time they made TOTBL.
@@gmarrt2340 believe it or not he never even touched a bass until he showed up for daniel’s audition in 98’ , and that’s when he composed all his parts to the pda bassline 😳
carlos motivates me to put down the bass
@@blunderless complete opposite to me, that in itself is just super inspiring, read in another interview that he actually started at guitar at an early age too
@@blunderlessI guess maybe he approached bass like a guitar player and that’s how it was so key in intepol’s sound unlike many bands
@@nondescriptbeing5944 not really, i heavily disagree with that notion.
he played the bass more like a bass than most legendary bass players. he just was more dark and less funky, whilst still having bounce to his playing.
if you look at obstacle 1 for example, he plays with a lot of etiquette in a very bass-y way. however he plays outside the instruments. you can’t get away with that staccato too easily in a guitar riff.
this is why i think he’s much, much, different from peter hook. i think most people have it reversed… hooky played bass like a guitar; often using chords, while carlos played more like a bassist, using severe note discipline and withdrawal.
I wish Paul would sing still sing like this. I like the deeper soothing voice better than the higher straining voice he's been using the past few years. Always loved Carlos ;)
it may be in part because of aging and his heavy smoking
No other band will come close to what Interpol made. Turn on the brigth lights was a perfect album. Bravo Interpol!
this bassplayer really knows his chicken ...
Astonishing Carlos bass lines !!!
Carlos Dengler intro in the new it's just mind blowing
Am I the only one that’s so emotionally moved by the New ?
No, The New is my all time favourite.
You can grab the emotions being poured into this song.
It reminds me of my worst case of unrequited love.
2,5 years for nothing and 6 years later I am still not 100% over it.
Let me say it like that, there was a perfect timing for that instrumental outro.
Exactly after this very quiet "How am I doing?"
@@fiercephiltv5314 you're not alone, its been 6 years last Jan for me and I'm still not over it. when i play this intro on my bass, I almost cry
Not at all. It's a magical track. So deep, so sad, so strong... It's like a warm embrace. One of my favorite track of TOTBL. ❤️🇮🇹
Nope... Especially the melody during "I can't pretend, I don't need to defend a part of me from you"
Carlos' funky phat disco bass perfect signature sound to compliment Daniel and Paul's rhythms, with Sam's metronome= Pure Awesomeness.
The mixing is ridiculously on point. Why can't all live music sound this good?
GreetTheSacredCow unfortunately a lot of idiots out there think the bass needs to be turned all the way down
@@RFFVNS i always thought the bass should be a bit louder than the guitars due to how low frequency the instrument is.
@@blunderless agreed, I love bass. That's why Interpol is one of my favorite bands. They incorporate bass as if its another guitar, equally prominent
RFFVNS carlos d is the reason i got a bass
@@blunderless same here, I'm mainly a drummer but Carlos makes it so hard to not want to play bass
Carlos remind me of my favorite bass player Simon Gallup from the Cure I wish he could comeback to Interpol and continue to amaze us with his briliant bass lines.
what i love about interpol songs is,as a bass player, the bass almost always feels like its following its own beat,or is playing a totally different song altogether while playing along with the band.... but it always fits for each song. like obsticle 1's bassline, kinda weird to play at first, but once i learned it,its so much fun to play... or pda's deceptively easy bassline being groovy and fun to play as well... great bass player carlos, sad thats hes not in anymore, but them basslines are eternal
Do yourself a favour and start listening to Elvis Costello and the attractions... BRUCE THOMAS IS UNREAL
Esta era la formacion perfecta de interpol :'( :')
amazing Carlos Dengler !!!!
No me canso de escuchar a Carlos en The New... increíble.
4:28 Carlos the don
The name of my Math teacher is Carlos Donn, close enough XD
Carlos is the better.
the bassist variations are insanely exquisite
carlos really stole the show for me...I've never really heard songs where the bass feels so central
Harriet Tubman the guy was truly talented at it
@@xian5334 indeed,
and it's crazy how he said he never really liked it, or at least it wasn't fulfilling enough for him.
this is interpol at their peak
After all this time I can still put on these tracks and be as into it as I was the first time I heard them.
As a self taught bass player I aspire to be half as great as Carlos D one day...what immense talent. Sucks he did not find playing fulfilling after a few years. Despite the falling out, Turn on the bright lights will forever be a musical masterpiece, and it's all the greater due to how Carlos D brings all the songs together.
I also cannot get over how fucking cool the breakdown is on guitar at 7:38 detuning and tuning the string to get that sound is so simple but so sick!
Also self taught here, recently been trying to learn his bass lines by ear just from watching/listening these videos. Hard as fuck, but If I don’t use I lose it
Fascinating how Carlos makes this bass his bitch *eyes wide open*
THE NEW.
This song is simply brilliant (as many others).
Carlos plays a virtuoso in BAss, and is like a third guitar that all Interpol play jazz.
Is this Dark JAzz?
In some ways is like to listen to Joy Division, but jazz.
MAssive great musicians.
Thanks to InterpolLive, to KCRW and Interpol.
Carlos is amazing.
Super Carlos!
Anyone in 2019? It breaks my heart to see Interpol play at this level with Carlos still in. Sadly you cannot turn back the clock
I completely agree, I wish I could have seen Interpol in 2001 or 2002 when Carlos still seemed to enjoy it. As sad as it is with Carlos having left we still have all the live videos and albums to cherish. I also think without Carlos it gives the other members more room to breathe, creatively speaking.
If they were not properly understood then, what would change today, even if by a miracle they were still like that?
What a sick video. I just shit myself from this performance of "The New." What a mess I've made of myself.
Not sure if really related exactly, but does anyone else feel drawn to bands/songs with strong bass sound/lines?
captbarnacles1 i guess it's unique. You don't really hear great basslines anymore except for a few bands. The bass usually just plays what the lead guitar is playing but simplified. With bands like this the bass plays and holds its own which is attractive to hear.
@@ryancuster1607 THIS
me! And songs with prominent/distinguishable drums too.
@@ryancuster1607 this is changing even in pop music. Plenty of indie bands nowadays are influenced by tame impala and Vulfpeck, for example. And now there’s post punk revival trending on UA-cam. In pop you have Dua Lipa’s songs basslines. People only want groovy basslines to dance a lot. I like it. Better groovy than unidimensional I guess. Like a funk renascence!!
I always Loved the intro to The New Carlos came up with some good shit mainly just off the bat. I wonder what he thinks about the new album.
8:27 talentazo. Carlos vuelve.
Damn Carlos bass lines are great, I got a bass and wish I could play like that.
8:29. That PHAT Disco bass. O.M.GAWD!!
Bands/Artists performing their very first studio album shortly after it was released will always be my favourite category of performance (helps when it turns into a classic like totbl obv).
Maybe not as polished as later on, but who cares. The hunger and drive you can hear/see more than makes up for that 😇
Paul's voice is fabulous... Carlos was a great bassist but now he's gone and the group continue without him. It's the more important...
They are in such a flow. Just amazing!! so good. Indeed Carlos finest hours
Say Hello to the Angels - 0:00
The New - 4:24
Obstacle 2 - 10:28
8:10 Carlos D. Yes!
Cristiana Yup. He’s just on another level
The bass player turned on God mode!?)))
i don't listen to music. I listen to interpol...
@Richard Fukuda interpol is a whole different piece of art
This sounds amazing , specially Paul`s voice
Genial
Jajajajajja siga buscando!me va a seguir encontrando
Jorge Aviles
How could Carlos whos such a good bass player just give it up?
Yet he was blessed with mad bass skills
Hence my comment
He really complimented the riffs with counter melody and still stayed locked in.
Andy Bell from Oasis (Bass) was great but actually played guitar in his first band RIDE.
@@businessdog do a guitar bass trading off thing with Paul in that case
What?
Paul´s Voice is amazing.
Sorry, now that I'm cleaned up, I just wanted to say this video reminds me of the New Order video for "The Perfect Kiss." The guy in the baseball cap at 9:08 reminded me of a similar situation in that video. And Dengler writes some of the sickest bass lines around. Shit, I just did it again.
You are not the only one!! :)
We all miss Carlos
Amazing band. Amazing music. Love you with all my heart. From Italy ❤️🇮🇹
They lost thier lead instrument when carlos left. He was the melodic driving force and foundation of the entire sound. They will never be this good again.
Carlos D and Eric Avery from Janes Addiction are my two favorite bassists who play with picks.
wise choice!!!
My favourite band
When was this performance? They sound absolutely amazing in this setting while their newer performances are nowhere this good
Feb 19 2003
Paul's smoking didn't help too much
The New is the perfect song
@4:30 Wow, just incredible!
Carlos...flawless
The version of "the spécialist" they recorded there is amazing too! Thanks for this channel ,it's kind of you. (A fan from France)
Carlos D just ripped that bass apart
10:28 obstacle 2

@@bearzdlc2172 that's cool help me beat Wesker
increibles! como me gusta
que bajo haces en the New caRLOS!!
21 years ago this perfection was recorded!! we all talk about the wonders of the 80's and 90's,,, i must agreed that the beginning of the 2k was equaly great!!! as soon cell phones became smart we lost all creativity!!!!
Paul's voice was on point right here
I miss Carlos :(
That bassline at 3:10 on... Oh my lord.
I keep coming back to it 🔥
oh my fuck Carlos
Paul's voice 💙
Daniel doesn't play that much on obstacle 2 that is probably why they dont play obstacle 2 anymore.
Carlos dangler best playing bass
Interpol fans unite and take over (2014)
The New, una delicia verla y escucharla tocar.
Nobody plays like Carlos
Peak Interpol

you're welcome.
Carlos the brain of this band !
Greetings from France too!!
Really,really great channel!!!
master piece
It must be fun to play in this band.
apparently not for Carlos
Interpol will never be the same without Mr D, he got an unique style that defined this band, such a shame he decided to quit the band and music ////
carlos d. ladies and gentlemen
amazing itnro
Yup most awesome
8:05 Carlos kicks into chill overdrive.
What song of this @7.00-10.28 ? Anyone??
'The New'
7:38 that stare of wanting to eat carlos alive
The first song is say hello to the angels
it's un fucken believable
all the planets around, the sun is the Bass.
I just had kittens.
sort of wish I could see them play with She wants revenge and finish with a surprise visit by Rush
Bonitinhos.
the best band ever...they are so hot!!
thought the intro was a cover of Tusk for a sec

At 4:13 you can see all the managers and record company people watching. Could not one of them have told the tech guy to stop mucking around in the background the whole damn time while they're trying to play? Shut the damn blinds or something if it's a task that has to be completed right this moment pal.
No one can dislike this.
