It really wasn't a great German team that could have easily lost to USA in the quarterfinals. The '06 and '10 German teams were both better even though they were knocked out earlier.
Even now, 22 years later, I still struggle to understand how this German team actually got to the 2002 final. The previous year, England had smashed Germany 5-1 in Munich, in a qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup. We went on to win the group, and so qualify automatically. Germany had to go into a 2-legged playoff match, from which they eventually qualified. I would venture to suggest that, in living memory, this, in my opinion, was arguably the worst German team ever. Oliver Kähn saved Germany of defeat against USA In quarters final with two or three magnific saves at first half. I remember that 2 of those great saves by the german goalkeeper were in both "hand to hand" when the american forwards went completely alone before Kähn. So, if you FORGIVE in football, almost always you lose. Only eight or ten minutes later the great german leader Michael Ballack scored with a nice shoot of head after throwing a free kick since the left side. Never the USA team was sp near/close of a World Cup semifinal. Miroslav Klose, Kähn, Carsten Jancker (a typical "panzer" at the same way by Hrubesch...) Christian Ziege, Oliver Neuville Metzelder etc. Kasey Keller, the fantastic USA goalkeeper, Agos, Reyna, some of the best american players. Great memories...
@@axnjxn91 well Der Titan later, in the great final against Brazil, was rather the dwarf. He played in the decisive match his WORST GAME with Die Mannschaft. It is true that without his wonderful saves against USA, Deutschland wouldn't have reached the great final of the World Cup. But once in the final, he was the principal responsable of the defeat cause he made a terrible error in the shoot of Rivaldo. A Christmas present. So, I never will understand why FIFA gave to the german goalkeeper the price to the best goalkeeper in the tournament. It is ridiculous that the price which decorates the best goalkeepr is yet given BEFORE the final match, how if the most important match didn't import for reaching this important price. In consequence, Oliver Kähn didn't deserve the price for the best goalkeeper
@@diegoruizmartinez3963 you still wrote „Kähn“ ;). You’re not wrong, that mistake was crucial and the award was a bit fishy- politics. But Kahn was the main reason Germany got to the final. @@axnjxn91 you are right. Sorry for writing "Kähn" when the right writing is Kahn, without Umlaut. The inertia of writing german words I suppose, because many german words take Umlaut. I thank to you for your opportune warning. Well, you're right with your affirmation about if Kahn (correct orthography now) had not made the fantastic saves he made against USA, evidently die Mannschaft never would have got the qualifycation to semifinal against South Korea and after to the great final against Brazil. Your thought is that the terrible performance of Kahn before brazilian team was in any case offset by his previous and decisive saves in quarter finals against USA. That is so true than my opinion in the way that the mistakes of Kahn against Brazil were very serious because the german goalkeeper was not able to catch an easy shoot from Rivaldo in the first goal scored by Brazil. It is true that the goalkeeper great errors are always more flamboyant (thanks Google...) than the mistakes made by the other players. When a forward or a midfield shoots to the clouds an easy action being alone in front of the goalkeeper or directly without the goalkeeper (with the goal empty) is no doubt that the error is as serious and incredible as the goalkeeper errors. And this is not fair. But I keep thinking that you have to wait for the end of the tournament to give the several awards for the different players. So, the best goalkeeper was the turkish Rustu. He led Turkey to the semifinal against Brazil without unexplainable errors like Kahn. In fact, many people think, like me, that the best goalkeeper was Rustu and so they expressed it in those moment
