We will be moving from NZ to northern Thailand (Chiang Rai) in a couple of years when I retire. I've visited Thailand several times and with my Thai wife of 16 years I'm confident I will be able to navigate my way through the maze of challenges unique to the country. Your videos are professionally presented with practical with up to date information on the current situation there. There is always something of value to be picked up from every video. Regarding bathrooms and toilets in Thailand (I may be a bit out of date here, and I hope I'm not too graphic but I have really experienced these things) (1) In some older apartments and condos there may be a 55 gallon drum full of water in the bathroom with a ladle floating in it and a smaller 5 gallon bucket with a cup floating in it. The drum holds the water that one showers with by pouring water over oneself with the ladle, the bucket with the cup is for cleaning one's butt. (2) In some high-class entertainment places watch out when there are numerous attendants in the men's room who, without being asked, will attempt to help one shake off those last few drops. In some low-class places the door to the men's room may open onto an outside walkway where one pees on whatever vegetation is out there. (3) You know you've been in Thailand too long when you realize that the footprints on the toilet seat are your own.
Pro tip : Don’t stand on a western toilet in Thailand. The toliet seat might collapse! They didn’t built it to handle all weight just on the seat. You don’t wanna be that guy in the headline here.
The location thing is spot on. When I came I booked a hotel near Thapae gate. It was just 10 steps from the main road but the problem was that it had those red white stripes near the footpath of that road so it was a non-stop area and most vehicles would not stop there. Even grab guys used to pick up a few meters ahead as it looks like its pretty strict over there. The other tiny lane towards the hotel would barely fit a car and the hotel did not have enough car parking. I should've checked street maps before I chose the hotel. Good point !
Good to know about the dog situation over there, that would be my biggest concern about relocating. I would more than likely bring my dog in the plane cabin with me, also noticed you have a Jack Russell and a Dachshund, I currently have a English Jack Russell and my previous dog before the crackhead was a Dachshund. Never book even a hotel room from the pictures alone. Learned that lesson on my very first trip in 2001. The room turned out to be a complete dump with a very rude staff. Fled after the second day. Also whenever you do walk into any guesthouse or hotel always look at the room first and check everything. If it looks bad ask to see another room. If they have some lame excuse as to why you can,t leave. More than once they gave me the most broken down room they had. I made a note of that and never returned. My #1 rule as far as renting a home or staying in a certain location is. I never live where there are foreigners EVER!.
What did you do with your mail? I plan on cutting all resident ties with the US when I leave, so I'd probably get a service that can scan my mail. Another concern is taxes and paying them from abroad from a non-tax state if you no longer live there.
I've got essentially the same question as Keith - what things does one need to do to cut ties with one's state, and what can be the (unintended) consequences of doing that? To put it another way, is there anything for which an American needs a connection - an address perhaps - in the USA? Things that one might want or need to use the address of a relative or good friend?
@@jeff5001 I don't think he can answer this question as I asked once before and he replied that he uses H&R Block but if you Google it, the answer is yes for federal taxes and yes for state taxes depending where you resided. I haven't made the move to Thailand yet but when that happens I will speak to my accountant for advice. As far as mail is concerned, there are numerous scan services available or you may consider forwarding your mail to a relative or friend. I'm not sure why but ive asked these type of questions to other youtubers living in Thailand and have never got a straight answer because most still keep residency in the US.
We use a virtual mailbox, IPostal One is the one that we chose. It's nice because they scan every piece of mail that comes in and you can ask them to scan the contents if you can tell it's something that needs open. Then they have options for someone to pick it up or they can mail it to you or hold it for you. We wanted to keep our 'virtual' address in South Carolina, which is the state we moved from, and they had a location in our area we had lived in. I can't speak on the taxes from a non-tax state, but I would highly suggest being in contact with an accountant who deals with expats so they would be very familiar with the process and could advise you.
We send it from our US Bank Account into our Thai bank account. Not sure what other options there are with it. It's very easy to use once you get it set up and they are very transparent on their fees.

Just a quick background I'm from California, hold a Bachelor's Degree, almost 40, and interested in teaching English in Southeast Asia but at the moment im gathering info until I'm sure its right for me. Going through an agency seems much more secure. I've heard you can arrive in Thailand and apply to schools in person but I've also seen comments of people saying they're still jobless in Bangkok and haven't had luck 😢 However, we don't know their individual situations and qualifications that led to that. If I were to arrive in Thailand without a job and plan to apply in person instead, what would you say is the minimum amount of money in US dollars to arrive with to secure a very basic and minimal lifestyle for a couple months? How much longer do you think this industry will last where foreigners can plug in and teach? Given that artificial intelligence and technology is rapidly encroaching on common services. Do you know if its commonplace to begin teaching English initially but then move onto other ventures like business later on? I just like the idea of long term because coming back what be daunting considering the rising costs. California in my opinion is becoming uninhabitable for everyday earners. Would you say Thailand is the ideal spot for this line of work overall in Southeast Asia? From my understanding Vietnam pays more but has strict visa requirements, and although Cambodia is more relaxed on qualifications that pay is lower and less resources/infrastructure which is understandable due to recent history but the culture is hospitable. I spent some months in Thailand back in 2006 and did visa runs every 30 days while it was still a thing. That was definitely exhausting. But I bring this up to say it was long enough to where coming back wouldnt feel like a total shock because I can still recall my experiences there like it was yesterday. All good advice. I've used Wise for years, it's great. And if you want to buy a place, check the title first before giving a down payment. A mistake i made, bad title, was a pain to get down payment back. Russian scammers, there's a lot of them.

Where can you pick up the wise transfers ? What are the options to transfer. Bank seven eleven.., etc
I've used Wise for years. Goes from bank account jn the US right into Thai bank account. Not sure if you can send to 7/11.
