This looks amazing. I've never held with cruise ships because they just seem so pointless, but a ferry that combines that kind of luxury experience with useful transportation is about as close as we can get nowadays to the liners of old, and I'm here for it.
Also, I love the aggressively low-res map of Japan at the very beginning. :)

I agree that it’s a great experience to travel by ferry in Japan. I travelled from Niigata to Otaru. Make sure you get a private cabin and definitely try the public bath. The only problem with the Niigata to Otaru route is that you arrive at 5am and they expect you to disembark. Otaru at 5am in late winter is no joke.

I did a fair amount of coastal cruising around Japan from 2007-09, but my "ferry" was gray and had a big number "62" on the side. I landed in Hokkaido twice, in Muroran and later in Otaru, where I was able to go and see the winter festival in Sapporo. I grew up in Massachusetts, so the climate was pleasantly familiar to me. I enjoyed my time there. Safe travels!

Watching your videos is making me think about building an itinerary of a long trip to your country using the ferry/train rides and cruises as the skeleton, then flesh it out with other things I like, like the ski resorts in Hokkaido.

I had a business trip to Nagoya 2 or 3 years ago and taking the ferry part of the way to or from Nagoya would have been fun. Unfortunately, it would have been very difficult to get my employer to approve that.
I do find it interesting that the ferries are copying the grand multi-story lobbies of the cruise lines. It does make for some very impressive space.
