Jhumpa Lahiri: Whereabouts: In Conversation with Howard Norman
Jhumpa Lahiri-acclaimed author of Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake, and Unaccustomed Earth-discusses her new novel, Whereabouts.
Written in Italian and translated into English by the author, Whereabouts follows a woman wavering between stasis and movement, between the need to belong and the refusal to form lasting ties, as she wanders the parks, piazzas, coffee shops and museums of the unnamed Italian city she calls home. “A beautifully written portrait of a life in passage that captures the hopes, frustrations, and longings of solitude and remembrance,” writes Publishers Weekly.

I am so glad to have watched this video. Whereabouts is such a sublime piece of art, the words slowly make their way into your mind and before you know it, you are in the head of the narrator. You try to control her but all you can do is observe.
P.S. I was so hoping that she says "Hindi" when she was talking about the mix of languages in her class. It put a big smile on my face when she finally said Hindi :)

Each language is like a different window in your room. You get a different view of the world quite unique to that language. Your mind reacts and responds to the uniqueness of that language.

wonderful interview. Really interesting ideas about how language can clear cobwebs from the brain, past etc. How more (learning another language) can create "less" as in simplicity.
