  • Hundreds of people killed and hundreds of thousands forced from their homes.
A weeks-long offensive by Rwanda-backed rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is spiralling into a regional crisis.
The UN estimated last year close to 4,000 Rwandan soldiers are involved.
Kinshasa says the M23 armed group wants control of the region that is rich in minerals.
Rwanda denies supporting the rebels and says it has deployed troops to stop the fighting from spreading into its territory.
Leaders from southern and eastern Africa are trying to mediate between the two sides.
    Will their efforts succeed?

@ If you choose to live in a foreign country then you choose to live by their rules. These people have had plenty of opportunity to live in either Rwanda or the DRC according to the laws of their respective country. If you don't like it in the DRC, then they have been free to move to Rwanda for decades now. If you don't like it in Rwanda, then you can move to the DRC or anywhere else your heart desires. So that is not the real issue here. The issue is that Kagame wants the DRC's resources and does not want evidence that he has been stealing the DRC's resources to come to light for decades now. So, he created the M23 to try and hide his theft while he accelerates his program to grab the DRC's resources while he still has time left.

Why is the focus always on Rwanda allegedly backing M23, while ignoring the DRC's support for the FDLR? We’ve also seen how people in Goma are welcoming M23, yet no one is talking about that. Why the double standard?
And as for Kagame, he never threatened Ramaphosa with war. He simply pointed out how Ramaphosa has been misleading people by claiming that SAMIDRC was on a peacekeeping mission, when in reality, everyone knows they were sent to fight militias in Eastern DRC. And even then, their real focus was M23-fighting alongside other armed groups against them.

Lives, our parents are in refugee camps in Many countries of east Africa including rwanda, this why Rwanda is accused to support banyamurenge (kinyarwanda speaking people from DRC) because one of the refugee camps is located in Rwanda.
Again, Banyamurenge people has relationship with Rwandaise because before colonisation, before Berlin conference of dividing africa banyamurenge were Rwandans after of Berlin conference they became Congolese.
But the government of DRC, they didn't care and take banyamurenge as Congolese.
After the 1994 genocide against the tutsi in Rwanda under the second republic of Rwanda, the killers fleed in eastern DRC where they currently kill and eat banyamurenge because they are tutsi who live in DRC.

After analyzing the issues in Eastern Congo for years, I became pessimistic about the two countries (DRC and Rwanda) finding solutions independently.
Political dialogue and mediation by a third party are the only solutions.
I don't understand why the Congolese government did not implement the Luanda accord by integrating the M23 militia into the Congolese army, as was agreed upon by all parties in the Angolan-mediated accord. That was a missed opportunity by the DRC side.
I also, as a Pan-Africanist, don’t understand why the Congolese government prefers to hire European mercenaries to fight against its people.
In any case, I doubt the Eastern Congo war will ever disappear as long as these factors are in place:
    1. The Congolese government continues to be inefficient and corrupt, with politicians who enrich only themselves, while the Rwandan government continues to be very organized, efficient, and powerful.
    2. The Congolese government continues not to respect part of its citizens, Rwandan-speaking Congolese.
    3. The Congolese government continues to harbor the Rwandan rebels, mainly people who committed the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

    A couple points of observation:
    1. There is a lot of focus on Rwanda and M23. Very little if anything is said about FARDC working with genocidal forces FDLR and UN sanctioned Wazalendos. No or very little mention of the Mercenaries employed by Kinshasa which is an international law violation.
    2. The humanitarian crisis is coming to end in North Kivu because M23 is taking control of Goma. Refugees were given safe passage to go back to their villages and will benefit from the protection of M23 soldiers.
    3. President Kagame did not threaten Ramaphosa. He merely addressed the comments he and his government made. Rwanda says they want peace but South Africa and the DRC are wrongfully convinced this conflict will be resolved militarily.
    4. Rwanda has called on for cessation of hostilities for more than 2 years now. The peace process was going in the right direction when the East African community forces were deployed in Congo. But Tshisekedi wanting to militarily defeat M23 brought on SADC which was an offensive force. Things only got worse from when South African forces went to DRC.
Lastly, tell Tshisekedi and his government to sit down with M23 leaders, listen to their grievances and settle this matter peacefully. Congo’s army is very weak anyways. They can’t win this war.

Since 1997, when Laurent Kabila waged war against Mobutu Sese Seko, the people of the former Zaire-now the DRC-have never known peace. The DRC is one of the richest countries in Africa, blessed with vast mineral resources. However, due to Western influence and support from neighboring countries that are looting its resources, peace remains elusive. These external forces continue to destabilize the country, exploiting its wealth while destroying the very people to whom these resources rightfully belong. The saddest part is that many of the youth, armed with guns and ammunition, do not even understand why they are fighting. They are killing their own people without knowing the true cause behind the violence.

One crucial aspect that people must understand to grasp the situation in the DRC is the collaboration between France, Mobutu, and the former Rwandan government (ex-FAR). After carrying out the genocide against the Tutsis, ex-FAR fled to the DRC without being disarmed, intending to regroup and recapture Rwanda.
During that time, they began spreading genocidal ideologies and massacring thousands of Tutsis who had been living in the DRC. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Tutsis were forced to flee, spending nearly 30 years in refugee camps. Meanwhile, the DRC government has continued its collaboration with the FDLR-a genocidal force-to this day.
Many of those in M23 today were born in refugee camps. Their entire lives have been spent waiting for UNHCR support, which amounts to barely $5 per month-money they must stretch to cover food, clothing, and all their basic needs. Imagine that. 😭😭
Yet, some-including the DRC government-choose to view this conflict solely through the lens of mineral resources. Do you really think these young people in M23 care about minerals? Or do they simply refuse to let their families and future generations suffer the same fate they did?
How can this problem ever be solved if it continues to be reduced to a fight over minerals?
These young people will accept support from anyone willing to help them fight as long as their issue remains unresolved diplomatically and in the right way.

Let’s look back in past years.Tshisekedi knows all too well that on March 23 2009
the DRC government entered into an agreement with the people of Kivu to incorporate their militant groups into the Army and Police and to incorporate their leaders into political positions. A pact that was never honored hence the name M23
Everyone rushes to claim Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, why don't you educate the world that these are a marginalized Congolese community who have been persecuted and murdered and their mineral wealth stolen by the UN for years
The Kivu region has seen over 6m murdered, killed in the last 20 years and this humanitarian crisis has been ignored by the world because the UN peace keepers were too busy stealing minerals!
The DRC government went as far as hiring Romanian mercenaries to keep this community of their fellow humans, their own citizens in captivity. This is a serious humanitarian crisis such that over 100,000 of this community fled to Rwanda and over 300,000 fled. this community fled to Rwanda and over 300,000 fled to Uganda
That's who M23 is and no one wants to share this truth because the West is involved in killing then and looting their minerals. Shouldn't the DRC goverment be protecting them? Aren't they humans that deserve protection and basic facilities from the government ?
Even when they have formed themselves into a militant group the same discrimination against them continues and they're labelled "Rwanda-backed" rebels as an identifier, as a minority ethnic grouping mind you that is also found in Rwanda and we're victims of the 1994 genocide
Was the DRC Government slowly executing a genocide on the M23 ?
The Hypocrisy of the West in the DRC Crisis
The ongoing crisis in Kivu and Goma has once again exposed the deep-seated hypocrisy of the Western-backed DRC government under Tshisekedi. While backed DRC government under Tshisekedi. While MONUSCO and SAMIRC operate under the guise of peacekeeping, they have stood by as the Congolese government systematically killed and deported Tutsi ethnic groups from Kivu to Rwanda purely based on their ethnicity. This ethnic cleansing has gone largely ignored by the same international actors who claim to champion human rights.
The recent capture of over 288 European-sponsored mercenaries in Goma raises serious questions about European complicity in this humanitarian disaster.
Western nations, while publicly condemning regional conflicts, are clearly playing a direct role in fueling violence in the DRC. At the same time, Kagame's involvement in their capture and his growing frustration with the UN and France suggest he may indeed be backing the M23 rebels-not necessarily out of expansionist ambitions, but possibly out of sheer exhaustion from the lies and double standards of international players.
Several investigative reports have already exposed the UN's role in the looting of DRC's mineral wealth, multinational corporations to profit from the bloodshed. Instead of maintaining peace, the UN's presence in the DRC seems to be more about resource extraction than conflict resolution.
As this crisis unfolds, one thing is clear: the West's selective outrage and continued exploitation of African resources remain unchanged. The people of Kivu and Goma are paying the ultimate price for a conflict that is, in many ways, externally engineered.

Having stopped the genocide in Rwanda, Kagame of course has to ensure that the Tutsis in the Eastern DRC are not massacred, just as it happened to the Tutsis in Rwanda. That is the difference. Before Kagame, Tutsis were being killed without anyone doing anything. After Kagame took power, the Tutsis are still being killed, but at least they have a state actor trying to protect them. Your argument assumes wars are fought based on population size, which is incorrect. Military strength depends on organization, strategy, and funding-not sheer numbers. Rwanda, despite its small Tutsi population, has a highly trained army and backs rebel groups like M23, which destabilize eastern DRC.
The issue is not about Tutsis as a whole but Rwandan-backed militias exploiting the DRC’s resources. Reports show Rwanda benefits from minerals smuggled out of Congo. Additionally, Rwanda uses the presence of FDLR (a Hutu rebel group in DRC) as justification for military involvement.
Burundi and Uganda have their own interests, and the conflict is driven by political and economic motives, not just ethnicity. The question isn’t "how can 6 million Tutsis fight 100 million Congolese?" but how a well-organized force can dominate a divided and resource-rich region.

Not sure if the name is Cristal Audison, but you got your facts mixed up. It is not Tshisekedi who was missing in Luanda on 15 December. It was the Rwandan president. Please check your facts. There are lots of lies and deceptions going around on this issue: For example Museven is really unfair to ask DRC to talk with M23 and taking the posture that Tshisekedi must negocite *directly with M23* as dictated by their master Paul Kagame. Ok lets analyse that:
    1. What message will that send to other armed groups? Will it not be that they just also need to have strong military support (from somewhere), terrorise communities in Congo and kill a lot of innocent people to force the government to talk to them and give them what they want? Can you imagine if two other groups take the same approach? Where will Congo be?
    2. What evidence do biased people like Mr. M7i (a staunched supporter of PK) have that the M23 *represents the interests of Banyamulenge* or at least the majority of Banyamulenge? Who voted them to represent banyamulenge? Rwanda? What about the majority of Banyamulenge who remain in Congo or are in other countries? You just get a neighboring country to support you and claim to represent some supposedly oppressed community and it must just be swallowed blindly? Like that? Are people thinking or what?
    3. Why does M7 and his cabal refuse to consider the massive documented atrocities and war crimes committed by M23 to the point of being designated by the UN as a terrorist organization? What is this madness that Tshisekedi must be forced gociate directly with M23?
Even Museven himself would never do that. May be he despises the the Congolese President and thinks he is stupid.
That will be swicide for Tshisekedi and the beggining of the end of the congolese nation. In principle, President Tshisekedi must refuse any direct negociations with these terrorists. They must lay down their arms and make their demands there after.

What do you say about the evidences of government soldiers and allied armed groups setting up roadblocks to tax local populations, maim and kill so many of them even while not in times of war? Aren’t you projecting their crimes and those of FDLR to the M23? Blaming them for making DRC government look bad is one thing, but assigning those crimes to them seems a bit disingenuous.
