  • Some say the "Gear Demo" is dying. I believe it's just evolving.
    However, there's a few critical things to take into account before deciding to hit that "add to cart" button... I discuss that here. And, play a cranked 100w Plexi because it's awesome.

    I just absolutely love the honesty of these guys. The guy that makes/owns wampler pedals telling you "hey man, you're not going to sound like the demo guy!" and the JHS guy always praising other pedal builders. A marketing program that is 100% honest is what users need. Keep it up!!!

      Your last sentence is why UA-cam is filled to bursting with so-called “product shootout” videos and reviews.... advertisers know where your eyes are and are exploiting youtubers to advertise for them. They give them free gear, pay for them to fly to product release events where they are wined and dined.... but not paid (yeah right).
      In the end, UA-cam is a gigantic commercial factory. These companies that abuse it are saving hundreds of MILLIONS using free youtubers to advertise for them instead of paying for TV spots.

      Same here. Pete Thorn for example, I just go there to learn stuff, meaning playing techniques lol. You can't expect a UA-cam video to give a fair representation of anything by the time its been compressed to shit and back. If you want to hear how something sounds, try it in the shop/store, and check that you can return it, if you don't get on with it.

    While I agree that an in-person demo is the ultimate, I think online demos (especially comparisons) are helpful, and can help whittle down the field.

      I've discovered that you need a pretty accurate sound system for that to work. :-)

    • @Relayer6a
      @Relayer6a 5 років тому

      I guess it depends on what you are hoping to get from the demo. Of course the exact sound isn't something that happens all by itself. You can't just plug any guitar into any amp and insert pedal "X" and expect it to sound the same as the vid that was recorded in "XYZ" studio situation, etc, etc...
      But there are some pedals that just seem to always sound musical and some that don't. I've heard some guitars that Greg Koch play sound like crap, to my ears. Even though Greg is IMO the best guitar demo person on the web. I've also heard some Pete Thorn pedal demos that I wouldn't give $5.00 for the device.
      For me it comes down to the person playing. If Greg or Pete can't get it to sound great, it must really suck. And a lot of stuff out there really is total crap. Not to blow smoke up anyone's butt, but Wampler is a brand that sounds musical. When you turn them on they enhance the sound. Some pedals just suck everything that sounds good out of your tone.

    Brian, this is an excellent point that people need to be reminded of every once in a while. When I demo, I like to think I’m making the Cliff’s Notes for the pedal - showing the features and how these tools might inspire riffs. Pete Thorn is the best! A pedal demo is good for seeing and hearing a pedal's functions and features and not necessarily to pinpoint subtle differences between for example a ts9 and an 808. Pete's tutorial on how to use an overdrive is a good example of how to demo a pedal so that you can mimic his techniques to verify if your current pedal achieves the desired effect.

Preferably a Dumble if you happen to have the spare change lying around. I PROMISE this will make you the next Stevie Ray Vaughan. The only other advice I would offer would be to maybe go to the Custom Shop and have a $7,000 Strat made by John Cruz but this is of course only if you're JUST starting to play guitar. I tell all beginners to make sure they hurry to the Custom Shop to get a "Heavy Relic" so they can be a good guitar player. It's really the only way. If you don't have any of these things then it just sucks to be you.

Of course it's not going to sound exactly the same, but I'm going to find my own use of the gear anyway. Most of the time it's enough to know that I can get a tone that I will use. All very true, great demonstration Brian. You gotta try em all and FIND the gear that works best for you. There is no fast,easy way to do it. Sometimes you get lucky, but that almost never happens for all the pedals on the board, the amp, and the guitar. Then theres the right monitors/iem the right mics although these usually give good results. When you think about it as a whole, it can be a huge task to reach your goal. Living in small town New Zealand, we do not have the luxury of being able to walk into a music store and AB a bunch of boutique pedals, so youtube demos are invaluable. I get that pedals on youtube shows will not sound the same with my equipment as they do in the demo, but there is still a lot of information that survives the recording, processing and youtube compressing. I may not know exactly what the pedal will sound like in my rig, but I do know what it will sound like when comparisons are made to similar pedals through the demonstrators rig. Shows like "That Pedal Show" are very useful for this reason, where a bunch of pedals of the same type are compared consecutively. I now own an EHX Memory Man, Fulltone Dejavibe, ProAnalog Manticore and Tumnus Deluxe, directly as a result of these videos and have not been disappointed.

    Right on. When I used to do videos with Taylor, we were trying our best to make it sound good. Not to over-sell the gear, but because we didn't want people think that we cut corners. The downside to this was that we were using probably $20k+ of gear in the recording chain in a professional studio to make that happen. Is that what even 1% of people listening have available? Nope. Also influencing it was (generally) really good mic placement and decades of experience behind small choices. Throw just anyone in that room and have them record and it still wouldn't have likely have sounded that good. So it was "accurate", but it sure as hell wouldn't be what it would sound like if you were playing it on stage, and very likely not at home either. And of course that doesn't even touch on Taylor's playing. As you say, two of the "same" guitars don't even sound the same. We often had a half dozen tele-style guitars or les paul-style guitars in the studio and they all sounded really different.
    Weirder yet, people would hear things that we didn't hear, even in the studio between pedals. I personally could never hear any difference between Klon pedals for example that couldn't be accounted for by a 1% turn on one of the knobs, and I tried maybe 20 different ones.
    As you say, in the end, you really need to try it out yourself in person, or at home, or in the studio yourself depending where you're using it. I personally don't even trust gear that sounds good in the studio to sound good on stage, nor what sounds good on stage to sound good in the studio. There's just too many factors.

    Or listen to tons of demos of the same product by different people using different equipment and setups. That should give you a good estimate of the variance. I would honestly rather hear some random dude plug it in to his random amp and do a random video on his cell phone and if it can sound good that way then I figure it can probably sound good any way. Some of the "professional youtubers" are in the business of production value and more self promotion than anything else and I don't know if you get the most accurate reading of a piece of gear when some dude is playing mega expensive amps and guitars. One thing I love about Brian Wampler is that he'll even play Mexican guitars on his videos and I personally don't own any Mexican guitars but I appreciate the fact that he's confident enough in his products that he doesn't feel like he has to play through a John Cruz Custom Shop guitar to make them sound good.

Having a sustainer pickup opens up a whole new world for what you can do with pedals. You can do some pretty wild sound design stuff using pedals with the sustainer pickup continuously making whatever note or chord you're holding ring out. I've been having a lot of fun with the sustainer pickup on creating soundscapes with my Red Panda Particle and Tensor delays, normal delays, Slö Reverb and volume pedal.

    Thing is, these days not all stores either have in stock or can even get things people might be looking for in order to try them out. The biggest takeaway for videos is to give someone a rough idea of what the gear in question can do. Watching a demo of a Tube Screamer shouldn't lead someone to think that when they plug it into their amp, it'll sound exactly like that. What it should do, is let them know that if they're looking for a high gain metal tone, that pedal is not the right choice.
    That's why when I'm looking at a particular amp or pedal, I try to find as many demos/reviews (video and written) as possible. Generally, if there are a lot (ie Boss Katana amps) you'll eventually get a pretty good idea of whether or not it'd be worth checking out. Where it gets hard, is when a particular amp or pedal only has a couple of video demos and even then they are pretty brief.
    I agree though, the best way to buy gear is to try it out but in the age of ebay, Reverb, Craigslist, etc... trying to get the best deal, trying things out in person isn't always possible. So that's why video demos are a really good resource but always keep in mind the motto. "your results may vary".

    • @DefconMaster
      @DefconMaster 5 років тому

      I completely agree, I just wanted to add that while a Tube Screamer obviously won't do high-gain metal tones on it's own, they are very commonly used in metal to tighten up and boost high gain amps, so your statement isn't entirely correct. I'm just being pedantic though.

    Caption had an Analogman King of Tone. Had one for years, always felt there wasn't one demo that did justice to how good it is. A good demo is when someone knows their setup well and knows how to get it to sound its best, then uses a pedal to make everything sound even better. It's crazy how many people downplay great pedals by a half-assed demo. Many pedals sound good, but they just don't all have the same feel, tough sensitivity or range. Makes me wonder how many truly great pedals I've missed that I still need.
    Brian's got a point! Speaking of pedals, it's possilble one can develop their intuition and ear for gear, but it literally takes years of practice. Basically, you have to spend years listening to every gear demo that comes across your path as well as getting to play them. Your ear learns to pick up certain characteristics and sometimes very acute giveaways as to how things are going to sound at home. Even then, there will be surprises. Also, you need to be consistent with your reference amp and guitar, that are all setup the same, so you'll gain knowledge as to how the pedals differ from each other. Without UA-cam we'd still be in the stoneage, but people seriously need to know what to be listening for.

    What you say is true; there is no substitute to trying the gear out for yourself. I’d love to devise a method of recreating that experience, but it’s just not possible.
    However, considering the amount of videos made about specific pieces of gear, we are creating enough data points where viewers can start to get a general idea of what said gear can do. Just my 2 cents.
    PS ( your video editing is really cool, great b-rolls too) cheers

    We've always said that, and for years we were reluctant to even put out demo videos on the Sioux Guitars website and we never had a youtube channel for the first 5 years we were in business. We focus on building the worlds best effects, amps, guitars and basses and figure someone either gets what we do or they don't and we're not in the video making business.

    In a perfect world Brian, totally agree. But not all of us have a retailer that stocks the stuff we want. I have had no luck AT ALL finding any of your products even remotely close to me in Central PA. There are so many of your pedals that I want to try out, but can't get my hands on them. Same with JHS, etc etc. Sometimes we have to compare the products played by the same reviewer, like Pete Thorn, against each other to get a baseline of what they reasonably sound like.

    I finally got around to this video and the thing is, where do you go to try gear live? There are hardly any guitar shops. The few that exist often don't carry a wide variety of pedals. They don't necessarily have my amp. It won't sound the same there either. There's no place for me to go to test stuff live. So you're not wrong, and this is very well done. You're absolutely right! But as people wrote below, for me the demo videos help to whittle down to what I think I might want. I buy it, try it, and send it back within the time frame if I can.

    I use gear demos as an indicator of that gear's potential (for my use cases). I'm in Europe and stores that carry a wide variety of gear, are close and allow you to bring your own shit can probably counted on 2 hands. So I'm stuck with watching demovids, ordering the thing and returning it if I don't like it (or buy 2ndhand & resell). I'd like to thank you (and all the other people demoing gear on YT) for a tremendous service (and entertainment).

    UA-cam demos are a brilliant resource for narrowing down your choices of a certain type of pedal or whatever. Even better if there are a number of different demos of the same gear by different players.
    To be honest the only surefire way of confirming gear is right for 'you' is to use it with your gear at different volumes, solo and ( if applicable) with your band. I've had pedals that were 'awesome' until I used them at volume with the band. The reverse is true too, especially with some drive pedals that only really come to life on stage.
    That Shaw sounded great, by the way!

  • @JonNewquist
    @JonNewquist 5 років тому

    All of these variations sound good. If a player is trying to mimic a certain player, the gear isn't gonna be the biggest part of the equation. I watch these demos because it's entertaining, and to find out what's new, so I can go try it out.

    When I want to listen to a UA-cam video for a music performance, I want all the bells and whistles applied to make it sound great. But I learned a long while ago, that if I'm looking at something like an amp demo because I'm in the market to buy, I actually seek out videos where they show how it sounds just through the room mic. Yes, I know it won't be a good sound recording, but it is a much more honest indication of how that amp will sound if I'm sitting in the room playing through it. I don't even want to think about how many novices have Jumped and ordered something like a Marshall MG-10 expecting it to sound like a Plexi through a 4/10 because of all the close miking and production done in the making of the video demo.

  • @markhammer643
    @markhammer643 5 років тому

    So the question is: "Factoring in the manner in which the mic, the mic position, the speaker/s and cab, and the manner in which video demos are compressed and otherwise altered in the process of being posted, what should a *useful* product demo consist of?". Personally, I want more info on the performance features, and less on the tone, since I know what I hear through my puny monitor is NOT what I will hear through any of my amps, and that each amp will probably sound different anyway (which is why I own them).
    So what will remain constant across guitars, pickups, amps, and speakers? Like I say, performance features. So, for instance, if it's a modulation pedal, what's the slowest and fastest speeds? what's the lowest and highest "depth" or sweep width possibilities? How resonant can one make the pedal, if there is a control for that? If it's a drive pedal, how much volume boost can it provide in the lowest gain/drive setting? How much variation in drive adjustments can I make? In short, what can it do that I *need* it to do, and what can it not do. All of that is immune to variations in mic-ing and amping, because it's what the pedal DOES, and not how it sounds.

    This video really helped me and it is something I have been suspecting all the time.I bought a gear through online after seeing it here on UA-cam.I regretted that day and still do.I questioned a UA-camr if they have other things that enhances their sound when they doing products demo,he ignored that part and answered irrelevant stuff. I just wish people can be honest these products they claim to be good when they are not,cost us a lot of hard-earned cash.Thank you for clearing this up,this video is very informative.

    I buy whatever is unique for the moment, when it's appropriate $-wise ... and then I try it with other combinations of gear I have. I've never not found something cool sounding. It does have to do with every variable. My problem is I don't document the combinations often enough, so I forget how to get the sound back. Even when I do remember, I might not be inspired the next time on the same setup. It's still fun!

    When looking on "Gear demo", Im looking how comfortable and passionate the reviewer looks while demonstrating the product. So Im not considering that much demos on Rever, ProGuitarShop (I love Andy Martin, no problem there) or say Dawson music, they make everything sound great and you hardly see any emotion there. Much rather would go for say Ola Englund or hell even Rob Chapman. You can see if those guys are enjoing the product or not.
    Edit: And yes, I agree with trying stuff for yourself. But nowdays there are SO MANY different products for everything (like overdrive pedals :D) so demos are handy. Saying that, I blindly purchused your tremolo pedal, just because I know, lot of your product are higly regarded among all youtube reviewers and you have nice nerdy channel yourself

    I really don't mind getting something that's been altered on the DAW, as long as the signal chain is clearly described. That's just simply proof of the myriad of tools/resources available for the bedroom "producer" today. And I don't mind utube compression either, you need to come up with something that sounds good through "bad" listening gear, the same way you have to find the right EQ to sit in the mix. I think it was EVH that played through his car stereo what was been recording on the studio to check how it "really" sound

    A good question to raise here is what microphone(s) and their positioning _reasonably_ replicate the sound one hears in the room, although obviously they can't replicate the room itself. The demos that I think sound more authentic seem to be the ones using two mics (real or virtual).

    • @samaudioyt
      @samaudioyt 5 років тому

      @Ben Hackett true, just the fact that the audio is coming trought microphones, preamps and the speaker you are using to listen to it will never make them sound like they are irl. Not necessarely worse, because for example in my case my room acoustic is shit so probably most of cabs would sound shit in my room while on headphones they sound great, but still it is different from what you will hear in real life.

    • @samaudioyt
