    The Story of How I Made THIS Film
    • How I Started Late and...
    “After his alcoholic father's death, a young man decides to sell the last memory of him - his taxi.”
    This 2D Animation short was my graduation film in 2020. No 3D software was used in the making of this short film. Everything was digitally drawn, animated and painted. My thesis focused on the use of perspective grids to emulate camera movements and rotations in 2D. I figured I never did uploaded it to my own channel so here you go!
    For the story, it is entirely fictional. But after some self-analysis I realized I probably came up with this story because of real events in my life, in a sort of “what if” version of how things could’ve happened.
    I created this film with lots of love for the craft that we do, and I really hope you enjoy it!

      I found this animation from that video. I don’t get very emotional but this made me tear up. It’s very inspiring to know that you succeeded at your goal after being told you weren’t enough, and made this as a result. Incredible work again, and great job with the story telling with this animation and the new video.

    This is gorgeous, super impressive for a college short film. The skill shown here is so professional 🥺 I’ve been looking at colleges recently for animation, but most of the affordable ones don’t seem to get their students to a high enough skill level for my tastes. If anyone has any tips on how I can get a good animation education but also be able to pay for it please share, I’m so stuck ahh

    • @ManuMercurial

      If I'm to be 100% I had to learn most of the skills showcased here by myself hehe. I went to a 3D school, so I had to learn 2D animation, drawing, and painting on my own.
      What I did was focusing on what I want to achieve, have a goal in mind, or a reference that I want to imitate (it doesn't matter if you actually do it or not) the important thing is once you know where you are right now, and where you want to go, all you have to do is do small daily exercises that will level up your skills to get there.
      Try tackling single topics instead of complex mixes, and I promise if you're consistent you can achieve the results that are in your head. Best of luck!!

      @@ManuMercurial I am not studying animation, although it is a dream of mine but I'll stick to just being my hobby. With most careers in college, you have to learn things on your own. Everything is studying and practicing and honing the skills to near perfection. Sure they hand you skills to help you, thats why you're studying but everything is mostly by your own effort. It doesn't matter where you study. So everything you're saying is 100% true. As for the person asking trust on this one :) I'm studying medicine, and colleges usually just tell you some things and then let you fly off, and you decide if you take it or not.

      Colleges are just a phase of your entire process! You have to put in a lot of work yourself and might still not end up where your peers end up, but that's simply because they came in with more experience than you. That is fine! What's more important is that you use this opportunity to grow, through your own ambition combined with professional assistance. Don't be too worried about what you see in the college's portfolio. Instead, see if you can get a chance to talk to the professors or alumni to get a better picture. Good luck!

      if you want to animate your own shorts i suggest you follow the path I'm planning, study comics and art first. composition, storywriting and comic techniques are all helpful to know to animate an original story. its never too late to start animating tho, so you might as just try before college. although I am not the best one to ask here as I'm still at high school, I'm planning to go somewhere at Italy, if that helps

    This was such a beautifully crafted short film. It perfectly illustrates the conflicting feelings one gets when someone who has hurt them dies, especially a parental figure. It is easy to simply hate the person before this, but, when they pass and one is left with the memories, they begin to remember the way things were before. Wonderfully done!

    Damn, that was downright stupendous! You have a mesmerizingly fluid style that maximizes the emotion from each transition. My two favorites were the transition of the dad shaking at the funeral to his tears becoming rain on the taxi windshield (a gorgeous way to show how his grief from his wife's passing affected him and his son's lives) and especially EVERYTHING to do with the swing. From the good memories of the father pushing the son forward to try to reach the light of his mom and a healthier headspace, to how he just can reach it in the arc and starts falling back into the darker memories of his father's worst moments, to how in the end he refuses to let them dominate him and runs to the hospital room to CHOOSE to make peace with it all. Utter visual poetry!
    I came here from your video on working on Lackadaisy after watching the Lackadaisy pilot (which was a fun watch on its own), and you are awesome! I want to ask your advice on the matter. I have a script for an animated pilot, but no drawing or animation skills to speak of (my specialty is screenwriting). What do you suggest for how to bring that story to life?

    • @ManuMercurial
      @ManuMercurial  Рік тому +24

      Truly appreciate your message Sam. Reading this I'm so very glad what I intended to show with those sequences did reach you!
      As for your question, going straight into an animation might be a big challenge for all the reasons you saw in the Lackadaisy video. My suggestion would be to team up with an artist to create a comic/webtoon first, and start building an audience around it!
      That way you can explore a longer story, and focus on the writing part of it, before expanding it to other types of projects like an animated teaser, until it grows enough to be able to crowdfund a fully fledged pilot. That's what I plan to do myself!
      Wish you the best of luck!!

    wow.. This is by far one of the best student films I've seen. Your storytelling skills made this such an emotional and captivating story and each shot transition flowed into the next sequence seamlessly. I absolutely loved how the flow of the story was never broken and kept me engaged throughout the whole film. Not to mention animating all the BGs just using a 2d software!! It must have taken a painstakingly long time to redraw every new frame in perspective again like the car xD (on a side note you should def make a tutorial on how you animated those BGs, I would die to see it as a fellow proponent of 2D BG animation c:)
    Also the music and story really reminded me of a story driven game called To the Moon. Its one of my favorite games of all time that deals with two scientists traversing through a dying patient's memories and this film made me feel like this could be a sequel to that series or something like that. Amazing job man, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos and hopefully finishing some projects of my own as well! :D

    I first saw this around the time when Lackadaisy first came out. I was super intrigued to see what other works you had to offer! This animation, at the time, was incredibly emotional but lacked that punch that I needed to actually cry. It still got stuck in my head though, coming back to me during super random times. It wasn’t until my Grampy passed away that I truly understood why.
    I can’t relate to this 100%. Nobody in my family are alcoholics, thank god. But it still speaks to me. I unfortunately was never as close with him as I wish I was, and when he passed all I could think about when I found out was how much I missed out on. I can hardly remember his smile, his laugh, the touch of his hand, all of it. Seeing this young man go through the memories of his life, doing his best to find the good in places he just can’t, then eventually stumbling his way back into the hospital room with the little guitar in his hand… I felt that in my soul. I desperately want to go back in time and change things, help him, do anything to make him smile again. To find the good again. But I just can’t.
    He was a wonderful man. I still miss him.
    Thank you for working so hard to bring us such a tear-jerking masterpiece.

What stood out to me the most was how creative the transitions are between scenes as well as how dynamic the camera is which is really impressive in the context of 2D animation. This is beautiful. Every frame is a work of art. I did not expect this to grip me the way that it has.
    Alcoholism has affected my family, so maybe that made it hit a little harder, but I could FEEL the ups and downs the young man went through. The funeral scene was almost too much, I loved it.

I did cry, but it wasnt like that my intense crying that i really want to burst. This is the kind of cry that is continuous and my heart is so filled with melancholy. It's amazing because there are really no words at the whole film but the sudden shifts of perspective and color, the music and the animation-- it felt like i was really there, yknow that kind of vr thing feels? Every passing memory was like a series of wind slapping me on the face that kept me on crying. It was lonely and very sad feeling. I felt empty actually after watching this, i mean i know it ended in a good mark and i know it might just be a fictional character, but i wonder how is the mc was feeling after all of this.

    • @ManuMercurial
      @ManuMercurial  Рік тому +4

      What I tried to convey with the end is, even thought the mc might not be able to completely forgive his dad for the damage and neglect he did, he reached a 'different' kind of forgiveness.
      When you understand the person that hurt you so well, that you also understand there's nothing to forgive.
      I hope he achieved peace!
      Thank you for your kind words!!

    Brings back memories of my own late father. He was an angry, impatient, short-tempered man who drove away everyone who ever loved him, including his second wife, with his verbal abuse. He died completely alone. I spent a lot of my childhood terrified of him. He was not a very good father at all. And I know the fact that none of his four kids were ever all that close to him hurt him and I also know that he brought that on himself. I know all this, and I still love him, and miss him so much. Thanks for helping me remember that.

    Wow this hits hard. My mom is an alcoholic, but she is still alive. My feelings about her are complicated, so much anger, unfairness and disappointment, but also worry and warm. I hope she could live as full life as it's possible (that doesn't include me, because I can't deal with her). We haven't seen for many years, but sometimes we text. I'm afraid of that moment and all emotions that might explode when she dies.

      Almost similar to me. This hits hard for me as well. My dad was an alcoholic during my adolescence. We shared fairly well good memories, most memories has definitely been more violent than good though. He stopped drinking so heavily when I was like 10, but he still was very violent, drank occasionally. He was a very violent man still. I’m now 23 haven’t seen my dad in almost a year. Even though he chooses a different family, then the one he has, and I am still in denial for the love I have for him. He’s still my dad, and I hope one day he will get better, and eventually happier, even though most likely without me in his life, it would really hurt me if something were to happen to him. Especially since I was the only one to stick with him when everyone left him. I just wish him well.

I interpret this as somebody who has been hurt and had bad memories but also good memories with their father and decided to make peace with his father. I watched the video on how you "failed at art" and its so amazing how you where able to make this despite failing out of hard work and passion. This might be one of my fav short animations.

    The saddest thing is no one is to blame because everyone is experiencing everything for the first time. His parents experiencing parenthood for the first time. And him experiencing grief for the first time and so forth. We don't learn this from school so we must go through it to the best way we can.

    So, the message is, his dad was a good father, but then after his mother died, his dad became a drunk, and likely abused, and neglected him, but that he should forgive his dad because he had a few human moments? It's my personal view that abusive parents need to work HARD to redeem their actions. it's not something that they're entitled to just because they're parents.. Oh, otherwise, really great animation, keep up the good work!

    • @ManuMercurial
      @ManuMercurial  2 роки тому +10

      It makes me happy that's the message you got out of the film, but it is not that he 'was' forgiven.
      In the end the main character probably didn't forgive him, but at least could understand him. I think its important to sometimes step on the shoes of people who have hurt us and understand why they did, even if we can't forgive. Thank you for your comment!
