The Master System II was quite common in Australia. We got the RF version, though interestingly there's a varient of the Master System II that has a dedicated RGB compatible AV port in place of the usual RF port. Everybody wants that model!
The Master System 2 seems to be very common here in the UK aswell. I had no idea there was an official RGB version though. I've only seen modded consoles with it
Just when I thought I kinda knew about all these Mega Drive variants, Adam comes around with the Aiwa Boombox and the Mega Jet! Never heard of those before! 😮 Great video!!
Great video. There is also the Pioneer SEED TV from 1983. Similar to Laser Active, this TV has modules and one of these is the game module that comes with the Sega SG-1000. The North American version came out in 1985 but without the SG-1000 module, since the console was not launched in the USA. But interestingly in the catalog it showed the design of a console that I particularly find similar to the Atari 400.
Jeez man! That's a lot of variants! Fantastic video! I think I could leave the vid running, make some macaroni & cheese on the stove, eat it & by the time I get back, the video would still not even be close to ending! Anyways, ハッピーアニバーサリーセガ Happy Anniversary SEGA!!!!!!
I had a Master System 2 here in Brazil. What killed me is that shortly after, MS3 came out with sonic built-in and all my friends got it lol. ofc I loved alex kid but Sonic was bigger than Mario here, at some point.
Cuddos to Tectoy. Me too, I still have my model 1 MS and my Mega Drive. Althought, my rich friends at the time all have SNES back then, in Brasil Sega was way more popular than Nintendo.
I feel your pain, they added Sonic as the built-in game with later Master System 2 systems over here, I had the earlier version with Alex Kidd which I never liked :D
I remember seeing a Sega Master System II at Child World around 1992 or so. They advertised an Alex Kidd game on the box as being built in. Never got it though as I still had my Master System as a prior birthday present.

While it wouldn't apply to this video, one thing I hardly see people mention, is the kids gear. It was a late revision of the game gear in japan, marketed to kids as one could imagine- It has a slightly different housing design, and with art of akira yuki from virtua fighter across the front. A number of game gear games from that point were also branded as kids gear games too. But tend to be very expensive.
The Genesis 3 components were actually manufactured by Sega, albeit in Korea. In fairness, you have to open it and look at its motherboard to figure that out. Still, really interesting video! Also really makes me wish the laser on my CDX didn't die.
Another thing to note, the genesis 3s soc is actually first seen in the last revision of genesis 2, the VA4, it has a smaller motherboard and has better audio and video quality than other Genesis 2 systems, so much so that I noticed a difference with composite video looking better on the VA4 rather than my VA1.8
Man, I remember the model 3, still have it. Asked my mom for a PS2 for christmas, she got me that genesis and thought is was a ps2, will always remember that day that I questioned so much, hahaha.
It's not called the go sega campaign, they just happened to make the 6 in 60 very similar to the G... Caught me out too but the bottom right corner is different. So it's actually just "60 SEGA" which isn't nearly as fun
Oh yeah the Laseractive MEGA LD... I think there were a few exclusive laserdisc titles for that unit? mostly FMV related stuff IIRC but still kinda neat. One rare variant I remember seeing in EGM was a solid gold Game Gear? I just googled it recently and there are pictures of the magazine scan so you can see what that system looked like. Always cool to see these SEGA history videos, looking forward to seeing more stuff like that in the future
Im so glad the algorithm sent this to me. Ive just gotten into it and have almost all the mini consoles and fantastic n64 colors. I have 25 different systems not counting the multiples. I didnt know these exhisted. Mecari and ebay watchlists now.
I thought the nomad was really cool, my brother owned one back in the day. I've had both versions of the Saturn currently I have the model 2 but I got the model 1 right after it came out as a Christmas gift (turned out to be my very first console ever)
I saw a TerraDrive being sold on ebay a couple of days ago. It was located in München (Munich), Germany and sold for around 970 euro. I even made a snipshot of it and stored it on my computer.
I remember being in highschool and looking at a sale paper for the Saturn, gettihbexcitd because it had a cartridge slot. Then complete disappointment that it was not able to play genesis games. I was disappointed because I knew that the console would be expensive, and I didn't want to leave my games behind, and I knew I would only get like two or three games a year barring rentals and yard sale finds. So I saw that and "dude I get to keep my games and have these new games too." And the controller looked like a neat update to the genesis controller. Such a wasted opportunity. Similarly I wish the dreamcast could play dvd. Even if the dreamcast games were initially on gdrom drives having out of the box dvd support would have given it greater mind share. Still would have had the limits of the processor and memory compared to ps2, but getting the dreamcast out as a dvd drive would maybe have made that little difference, and games swapping over to loading from dvds would have given developers that much more space to work with.
I, too, wish Sega had made the Saturn backward-compatible with Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD games. That would have made me want it more. Instead, I had to settle for a Genesis, N64, and PS1 as a kid. Only three years ago did I finally buy a Saturn at a flea market.
The dreamcast did have a dvd stand (called the ps2) also dreamcast versions of games where usually better than ps2 versions. Also dvd bad my ps2 dvd player died for playing dvds. My dreamcast still working.
I live in Belgium and had a Mark II (black version) as a child and the cable box to switch the coax absolutely frightened me. The thing electrocuted me sometimes and you could see sparks coming out of the slider, I still have fond memories of it though it is a shame I had given it away after getting my PS1.
When he talks about the Master System II being uncommon in North America, I'm sitting here in Wisconsin like "I have a legit NA model".....then he proceeds to say he got his model from Wisconsin.....Is the Dairyland the Master System II holding grounds???? Also I have the Genesis 3, and it is nice for playing Japanese Mega Drive games since the cartridge slot doesn't have to be cut to fit the different shaped carts.
Literally looked this up specifically to hear you talk about the Nomad. It's the Genesis I had as a kid. Just bought one on eBay for 300$. Should have never sold it lol
The Master System II was huge in Brazil, but it was rebranded as Master System 3 because the name Master System II was attributed to a revised Master System. There was also a Master System IV, which was something like the Mega Drive Jet. You had the controller and motherboard in one unit with connectors to power and tv output
I forgot to mention. The same goes for the Mega Drive. The Mega Drive 2 released in Brazil was a revised Mega Drive, so the Mega Drive model 2 was released as the Mega Drive 3. If I I recall correctly, the actual Genesis model 3 never made it here, though
i love how in the 6th gen every console (except the xbox) had a variant of the base console, dreamcast with the drivers 2000, playstation 2 with the psx (not confuse with the ps1), and gamecube with the panasonic q
i still remember when i bought the sega cd: was scouting flea markets for games, and there was a big pile of portable cd players. remembering that there is a phillips CDI made by sony that includes the videocard needed to play almost all the cdi games i have, i took a look. i lift a couple and i immediately saw. grabbed it, asked for the price and the clerk said "3 dollars". of course i bought it and drove home screaming like flanders all the way back. and before that, i bought a nomad on another flea market, with an extra controller, av cable and power outlet. still use it to this day via the game gears rechargable battery pack.
The cdx is legit one of the best system I ever owned. So pratical, so small, way less noisy and faster than the og sega/cd system. Honestly the best system of the bunch
There’s the Korean Samsung versions of their hardware, specifically the Saturn that had a bunch of stuff added to it, though it goes for ridiculous numbers
I remember seeing a Mega Drive/PC combo with a cartridge slot on the keyboard for sale in a Brazilian Carrefour in the late 90s/early 2000s. I wonder what was up with that.
Awesome I counted like 20 genesis versions , which total surpass snes 49 million. Thats why it went from 29 to 34 to 42 million genesis models sold. I still want samsung alladin boy genesis ;)
Im more of a nintendo/sony fan but my first system was a Master System. Owned a Saturn and Dreamcast also. I still have the Dreamcast. I might setup dreamshell on it but I dont think with that game lineup it will ever be more than a novelty to play.
I’ve got two Master Systems 2. I believe that the colour (grey/black) denoted the different build in game. From memory it’s Alex the Kid for black and Sonic 1 for grey. I’m in Australia
I've heard the Majesco Game Gears don't suffer (or hadn't started to) the capacitor issues that have made original model's not work anymore so they can be worth looking into picking up if that still holds true. I was sad when some years ago now I tried to use it to find the sound was gone and the screen was unenviable.
Damn, that Wondermega looks nice, would like to add one to my collection. Just too expensive so far, the ones I came accross. I wish I bought one earlier on, like my boxed SC-3000H and boxed Megajet, when they were still not that expensive. Would like to own the Aiwa some day, but mannnnn they are expensive.... great video as always Adam! Edit: saw one of the navi-saturns (if you can call them that) for sale in Japan the other day, astronomical price people are willing to pay for those....
I'm not sure why Kega Fusion need the SC-3000 controls as an available option, then again Kega Fusion plays Master System games phenomenally so maybe there might be a title with the SC-3000 in mind.
I have been wanting and looking for the WonderMega the motorized door version either the Sega or Victor/JVC for years! Every time I see one it’s so EXPENSIVE!! $500-$1000 USD! Alas I will probably never to add it to my console collection.
You sir are the reason I looked up the CDX... I managed to nab one on ebay for criminally cheap! Never knew it existed
PS5: I'm officially as big as a cat!
Divers 2000 DreamCast: Pathetic,I'm as big as a dog
The normal DreamCast is as big as a hampster.

Noticed it right from the start of the video. Very painful to watch.

*THE WOBBLE!*
At one point I legit thought it was going to fall over.
That pioneer set-up with the modules would've been a nice, high end flex in the 90s, but that Aiwa Sega Boombox is neat; I've never seen that before!
I love how Sega literally gave you some ideas on what to do for a future video. Happy 60th Anniversary, Sega!
That Laseractive just hanging on the edge of the table gave me so much anxiety every time you bumped it.
Is your pfp a riff on the Chicago flag...?

The NOMAD has the greatest d-pad ever made. I really wish Sony or Microsoft would take notice and use there design on the game controllers

So great to see you working with Sega in some form. You are a great ambassador for their history and future.

Great video Adam. Love all the unusual variations of consoles.

This will now be the first video I turn to when I want to show people how crazy Sega got with the hardware models.
While it wouldn't apply to this video, one thing I hardly see people mention, is the kids gear.

The Genesis 3 components were actually manufactured by Sega, albeit in Korea. In fairness, you have to open it and look at its motherboard to figure that out. Still, really interesting video! Also really makes me wish the laser on my CDX didn't die.

Tell Sega to make a Mini Saturn that plays all discs, sega cd, Saturn, dreamcast, that stores all disc's inside with Ray tracing.
Sonic introduced me to sega. Their games are some of the most innovative titles i have played not fleshed out(sonic06 💚).
