- Thanks for liking this video! ;)
These steps require ZERO, zip, nada, not-a-one modification to your system. No sensor blocking, no straw mods, no chips!
This video will show you how you can play backups of imported games (burned dvd/cds) on your ps2 using a dvd burner, a program called ESR and an exploited memory card containing Free Mcboot.
If you're burning CD based PS2 games (generally earlier releases as later ones are DVD, you may find help in this guide:
www.theisozone....
Don't forget the last step, especially if you see nothing on your screen after the colours flash, is to press X, down and X, slowly! That's the key to it all.

**Getting a black screen when booting ESR? Download either of the esr.elf guis I have linked to a usb stick and follow these instructions:**
1) Use uLauncherElf to copy the elf.esr from your usb flash drive. Hit Circle and navigate to mass, hit R1 over the ESR.elf file in mass. Copy. Triangle to go back, then find the memory card that has your freemcboot on it, either mc0 or mc1. Navigate to boot, R1 again and paste so the elf should be placed in the boot folder along with the other elf files. Delete the dud esr.elf file if you want. This is what you do anytime you want to move a .elf from your usb to your freemcboot
2) Reboot
3) Now you'll make a shortcut to your esr.elf file so freemcboot can find it since the old esr.elf is a dud. Go to the bottom of the list and start Freemcboot Configuator. Go to Configure ODSys. You want to scroll down to Configure Item and then tap right until you hit a free space (usually 9 or 10). You're going to name it ESR
and navigate to the path on the freemcboot card where you placed it, in the boot folder. Hit return, then return a second time. Next you want to save the configuration to MC1 or MC0 depending on which slot your card is in. (Save CNF to Mass0/1)
4)Reboot
Robobin Hey, I'm still getting a black screen. Is it because I'm using DVD plus r? Are you using minus?
It shouldn't super matter if it's plus or minus. Maybe try loading without the dvd first and see if that kicks ESR into action. I'll think about other possible solutions in the meantime!
I spent hours looking for this thank you!
Did it fix your issues?
@@robobin ESR boots but it cant read my games
Finally, someone put it into simple, straight instructions.
Everyone knows how to over-complicate things it seems.
THANK YOU!
3:33 police sirens as they put a burned disc into the ps2
They'll never take me alive!!!
Clear voice, very detailed directions and just all around a great help. I appreciate your time and effort.
Awesome, I'm glad it helped! Lemme know if you have any issues!
robobin I actually have done it before but when I was 15! Now I'm 30 so this was more like a refresher than a totorial, lol but a great refresher. You helped me remember everything else, even troubleshooting I'm good for, thanks again.
Because of you ROBOBIN and your informative video had made me go on EBAY and buy a Free McBoot card and boy oh boy was it the best investment ever. For years the PS2 was tethered down due to region restrictions and with this card you can unlock your PS2's hidden potential and having no Red Warning screens telling you what you can and cannot play is ridiculous. With this card that will become a thing of the past.
However I've only just started experimenting with the Burning Procedure and it turns out the PS2 laser runs flawlessly on Burn Speed 2X.
Granted it's slower but you will get the best optimal performance and the disc is guaranteed to boot fully.
So thank you very much.
I've always wanted to play the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid 2 and now I can.
Yay!!! ENJOY! What's different about the Japanese version? I have found that burning at x2 does work best, but apparently it's not as gentle on your ps2 laser in the long run.
I have no idea how true the claim is, so I'll just enjoy it while I can. Someone else in the comments below also had issues burning on everything except x2 so it'll be whatever works best and gets those pesky disks loaded.
Congrats though on getting it to work!!!
The sound of your voice...I could listen to you talk all day. Thanks for the tuturial. Much appreciated.
Ahhaha, I should capitalize on a 10 hour loop of this 5 min video.
Thank you so much! I hope it helps, let me know if you run into any problems
That watch time would definitely spike. I'll be sure to contact you if I should have any issues. Would you happen to have a twitter handle that I could follow?
lol, I do indeed! I'm mostly a let's player but I do put out tutorials from time to time. twitter.com/robobinnie
I'm always interested to know if the tut works for people, so it's much appreciated :)
Ooooh....Even better. I'll check it out.
Exactly what I was thinking, so clear and well spoken.
Perfect video, don't understand why this hasn't got more views, clear and simple we'll done on the content!!!
Haha, thanks Conor! I think there's only so many people out there playing their ps2s still who aren't emulating :)
robobin very true big up the ps2 elites
My stepdad gave us his old ps2 during quarantine so I went down a wormhole all over the internet trying to find a way to play the iso and it's all been trial and error. With this video I can finally get games on the ps2 and we're having a lot of fun with my siblings playing this. Thank you very much and God bless you!
I'm so happy it worked out for you!!! Enjoy the PS2 library!
Thank you for the time and effort put into the video this is by far the best tutorial on this I've seen.
thanks for this. I watched a lot of Shit trying to figure this out, and this was the only clear thing
Alec Moncrieff - you're super welcome!!! I did the exact same (watched a ton of shit trying to figure it out too!!)
Great tutorial. Straight to the point. Finally managed to get US Tales of the Abyss working on my EU PS2 with this.
That police siren sound when u insert the burnt disk though 😁
Thank you so much, clean guide. Even helped me with me esr.elf file. Had some slight problems with burning, burned it on a crap DVD. Luckily I had some other DVD's laying around and it worked flawlessly.
Great I'm happy to hear it worked!!!
Very helpful! As soon as I get some Verbatim DVD-r's, I'll try burning some iso's and patching them before finally launching them with esr.
Awesome! You don't specifically need Verbatims, it's just what I had lying around :) If you have any questions definitely ask and I'll try and help solve em!
Thanks for the comment :)
This all works, except if you are using a Verbatim DVD - R you should probably use x8 as your speed if it doesn't work with x2 or x4
Yeah I added an annotation in about that shorly after I made this video, but if you're on mobile or have annotations off it won't show :) Always a great thing to troubleshoot for sure, thanks for the comment. For anyone having problems, this could be your issue!
Thanks for the walkthrough. Recently got a powerful craving for We
Cheers! I also suggest you look into a hard drive and OPL, that's another tutorial I have. Should you want to preserve the ps2 laser.
still a great guide that ive looked at again today as I had totally forgotten what to do
This is great, crystal clear instructions, quick and to the point and worked flawlessly. Thanks!
Mine don't work. Just a black screen
Thank you for this video! Was finally able to install FMCB thanks to FDVDB. Now I can finally play my Persona imports!
finally an in depth video :) thanks very much :)
Thanks for the tutorial! Gonna order a freemcboot and hope for the best!
This worked perfectly - thank you!
Also, some games may need to be converted with a converter (I do it always to be sure). You could use "ntsc2pal" converter for this. It works for me.
Did some research because I didn't know this was sometimes an issue! If your tv doesn't like NTSC formats or if you're using composite cables (red, white, yellow) then yes some games may need the ntsc2pal to converter first before esr patching but if you're using the compontent cables (blue, green, red) then you shouldn't need it.
a big thank you from me very simple to understand
Thanks, Worked like a DREAM! Very Simple Steps =]
This is great! Thank you so much. Best tutorial on youtube!
lol! Cheers, let me know if it works out for you or if you run into any issues!
I got it first try! You made it super simple for me though. :)
+Will Sephton That's epic! I'm glad! Enjoy the crap out of your new games!!
I have fortuna & free mcboot working on my 9001 slim. Hello my Canadian friend. I used to live near the border in Maine !!
Thank you! Because of you i can finaly play Persona 4!
Isn't that always how it happens, hahaha!
Thanks so much from the UK. You were a big help
Excellent, always glad to hear the success stories!!! Enjoy your games :)
Short, simple & to the point. Thanks
Thank you enjoyed watching
I hope it helps! Not a prob :D
robobin absolutely
This is amazing! This means I can play the Japan imported games that have English fan patches (I own the Japanese games physically). I can also play the many PAL PS1 games if I am understanding correctly(?)
I've been trying to get my game to run but nothings working. I burnt the game to a dvd-rw and everything went smooth. I launch ESR and i get a black screen. I try to patch ESR.ELF by running ulauncherelf and it goes to a 'no signal' screen. How am i supposed to patch ESR.ELF with a GUI version if i cant even launch ulauncherELF?
theres also a way to install FreeMcboot yourself if you have 007 Under Fire. It involves a disc swapping exploit by swapping the game at a certain point with a burned iso of 007 that has a hacked file that can run the installer from the usb
There is, but what's the point when you have to open up your console and block the sensors for the exploit to even work. An unmodded, unfreemcbooted ps2 cannot read burned isos. That's way too much work and effort when you can just buy a premodded memory card and NOT open your console up.
robobin i didnt have to do that, I used a slide tool to swap the discs, but then again I have phat ps2 so its probably different for slims
Ah in that case, yes for the slim the procedure is completely different. The slim, unlike the fat, has no disc tray. To get a swap disc to work, you need to block 2 lid sensors and move a disc break at the back of the lid area.
I am going to add an annotation in though to mention that if they have a fat there are tutorials out there where they can install FreeMcBoot for free.
So thanks for the heads up, you might save some people some money!
There we go, Pokechao :) I've added in an annotation to let people know that they can install FreeMcBoot for free should they want. Thanks for the heads up!
How long should i expect to wait, and wait, and wait?
Thank you. I needed a tutorial like this one.
Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions or run into any issues!
robobin Sure. So far I haven't. Everything worked fine
Thank you so much for this! Also, memorex is a good dvdr for this, I got it at wal mart. Try to get one with at least 4.7 GB
You're totally welcome, enjoy!!
Or if your lucky enough to have the PS3 memory card adapter you could use that and make your own freemcboot card plus do other great things
+sneskegagama very true!! Those things are crazy expensive these days but that's also an option!
I got mine on Amazon brand new in 2012 for $20. I needed to get a save off of an emulator and on a real PS1 memory card.
+sneskegagama they're about five times as expensive now or more!
or use the gameswap trick and make a fmcb mc for free (if you have dvds and a supported game like 007 agent under fire already)
Yep that's an option too! Still need to buy a copy of 007 agent under fire though, I don't know why you'd go through the trouble
good video straightforward and to the point
When I load ESR, it reads my disc as a DVDVIDEO not a ps2dvd. And when I click launch , it stays on a black screen. Please help
fix it?
3:33 POLICE COMING FOR YO PIRATED ASS XDDD
For real though it's a good vid. No fluff, short, and informational. Thanks for the help!
Hahaha, thanks dude! Spam filter caught this, I approved it
Robobin google's inaccurate like that lol. Thanks for reading still.
When I launch it all I get is a pink screen on esr launcher
+beanhole123 pink screen means bad burn. Burn at a higher speed, change your media (DVD brand) or find a different iso file
i used all the things youve used but when i download the iso (it opens with notepad) from emu paradise idk if thats a problem but the the patcher works i tried 4 times (2 4 6 8) with diffrent games they all failed i used a dvd r is that the right one to use?
I'd definitely say try a different iso in that case! It seems to be the only outstanding element to rule out.
ive tried diffrent games from emparadise 4 diffrent ones (if thats what you meant ) i dont know any other sites that do iso
the iso are working (i ran pcxs2) but now esrd wont work (says file wont open)
Quick question: can ESR load out-of-region retail game discs directly? Or do the games need to be ripped, patched, and burned to a separate disc in order to load through ESR?
Need to be ripped. Free mc boot will never be able to play out of region disks. If you want that method you need swap magic 3.6 and to perform the straw mod on your ps2 if it's a slim.
If ESR could load out of reigon games I wouldn't be making this video because there'd be no point for it.
Thanks for answering. Can I ask one other thing? When you say you have to wait and wait and wait, etc., how long of a wait is it typically? Sorry, I'm just not sure whether you sped up that part of the footage or not.
I didn't speed up the footage, that's how long it took :)
Do I need to patch my iso?
i am playing nocturne and it works fine but it takes so long to boot up
this is the best ps2 hacking tutorial video ive ever seen, kudos to you \o/
does anyone know if this works for fat ps2 scph 50001
might be a dumb question. But will this work for FMCB 1.966?
It should yes!
What is the fastest speed that you can burn the isos on the disc on? My minimum is 6x, and it sounds like it's too fast...
It'll depend on what DVD-R disc you're using, lets say the disc you're using is a 16X write speed then copy it at 8X speed, you should try copying it at -50% whatever the disc max write speed is.
My free Mcboot just came in!!
Let the testing and hopefully successful burning begin!
I would use opl but it's inconsistent for me I would love to just use disc but I can't ever seem to have any luck when doing so I burn the ISO after patch to disc but then I always get invalid disc in drive :(
It could be the brand of DVD you're using or your laser has become to weak to read burned disks (reading backups is harder on the laser and like bad eyes, it won't be able to see the data if it's too weak)
Also try burning at a higher speed, like 8x
Can i just use the og import?
Thank you for this video! I have a question though, are you definitely sure FMCB won't work on a 9004 PS2? Why wouldn't it?
Heya Rayan! It won't work on ps2s with the number and letter code 8C and after, which is the 3rd quarter of 2008. They changed the bios so that freemcboot absolutely will not read. So if you have 8C you are right on the cusp of FreeMcBoot working and if you're 8D or later, so 9A/B/C/D you're out of luck.
You can certainly try popping a memory card with freemcboot in and see if it loads, but if it shows up as just a regular memory card when the PS2 boots, freemcboot will not work on that ps2, the bios is just too new and the exploit patched.
Guys hang tight, she's gonna update the link so everyone can download the patcher.
Hey DarkDestiny, what version of FreeMcBoot are you using? I'm thinking your problem is with the esr.elf rather than the esr patcher.
Alright I've updated the links! Also there's a good forum post here with an alternative patcher and an esr.elf if you suspect yours is giving you trouble (as well as a how-to to install both)
Let me know if it works out for you!
psx-scene.com/forums/f164/quick-esr-tutorial-118881/
robobin I'm having no problem with mine, I'm sure it's the most updated one they have, so I'll let you know if it truly works when I get my Free-McBoot memory card which should be arriving today... lol, even though it was suppose to arrive yesterday.
I already have one game burned to a disk and ready to go as soon as I get my card.
robobin thank you for updating it, was a pain in the butt searching for one for hours that actually would download and or work.
Totally please keep me updated, that would be fantastic! And if you have further troubles we can continue troubleshooting! :)
Ive got a free mcboot version 1.966 how do I use it to acceses a Japanese game on my uk ps2 ???????
You don't, did you watch the video at all?
@@robobin or so how do I do it can you explain please
You're commenting in the chat section of the video that explains how to do it.
Question can i play for example, JAP games on a PAL based ps2? Thx
I discovered that u can aslong has u arw using a externad drive or a pendrive to boot it. Might be helpfull for yall
When I go to ESR my screen goes black... any way to fix this?
It could be a bad burn ot bad media or a bad iso
same here
Does OPL use ethernet cables?
will connecting the ps2 to my computer with ethernet work?
Not working for my ESR i take is just black screen
Did you get a flash of colours before hand? If you're talking about ESR loading to a black screen, you'll probably need to update your ESR.ELF. (you'll need a usb stick and uELFlauncher to move it from the usb to the freemcbooted mem card)
psx-scene.com/forums/attachments/f164/58926d1478376519-esr-public-beta-esr_gui_test2.rar
for the ps2 games with a purple bottom (.bin)
how do I play those games?
If the game has multiple disks, do I need to do this for each disk?
thank you. ..can you give me information on how I can store on a hard drive and play direct from the hard drive
thanks great video
I can give you a bit of info! You need an IDE hard drive and a way to connect it to the computer, either via an old enough computer (2002 era?) or a USB to IDE connector cable to make the computer think it's an external drive. You can plop any iso on there and you don't need to patch it to play it. Unfortunately I've never done it myself so I don't know the logistics of it. Perhaps google something called WinHiip to figure out more? Then you'd use FreeMcBoot to run it :)
And thanks! Best of luck figuring it out. If I come across a fat ps2 in the future I will most definitely be making a how to video for that :)
Hi there, thanks for the video! One of the most informative one I've found so far, although I would like to ask a question if you don't mind. Will this work on softmodded consoles?
I'm only asking this because I purchased an SCPH-70003 model for my niece and the guy whom I bought it from said that burnt DVDs don't work on the console only on ones that are "chipped".
All I have is a PS2 Slim of said model plus a memo card with FMB installed.
Yeah this is a great solution for softmodded PS2s! You do need to make sure any burned disk is patched with ESR though for it to work.
How is that every game I have has to go to the simple media system in order for me to go ESR I dont get it everyone else can go right to ESR with going to SMS
Question, I have free Mcboot, followed the steps but the burning to the blank cd failed, do I need to get a bigger size cd or keep trying with the 700mb CD-R?
Most definitely a bigger size, a 700mb cd will not work :) You need a DVD, which I believe is 1.4gb. Ps2s games other than the very first ones, were all over 1gb in size.
700mb is .7 of a gb or one gigabite is 1000mb :) If that makes sense
Hi! I have burn devil may cry 1 on dvd-r I have patch with esr patcher but after colors the game goes to black screen I have burn the game at 6x. How can i fix please?
Isn't true with the modells starting with 9. The early models of them with early Datacodes are able to boot fmcb because they still got the old bios. Start your ps2 and go to settings press triangle. Is your bios 2.2 or lower, your ps2 is compatible with FMCB.
This made it all clear to me :)
I'm glad!!!
My esr just goes purple when I click on it
+Jookie Gamer most likely a bad burn. Try a different iso or different burn speed :)
Do I need a PS2 to for this to work? I have a WonderSwan that I'd like to load my Dreamcast games onto but I can't get the McBooter to fit. There also doesn't seem to be a version ESR disk patcher that will boot on my Sidekick II. I'm really having doubts about this whole thing.
Thanks a lot youre the best !
Ahaha! No prob! Thanks for the tips on my Corpse Party video! I'll totally put those to use this evening, much MUCH appreciated!!!
Will this only work if I mod the PS2 because I have a friend who doesn’t want to mod his and I thought I’d burn him some games
Yeah no modding required but you DO need a burned disk with free DVD boot or memory card with freemcboot
Robobin ok cool so I don’t need to mod the PS2 , thank you for your help
No modding needed correct. As soon as you remove the memory card from the PS2 you remove the mod. The system isn't modified at all
the game played but just the video preview than it freeze at the menu I cant chose new game etc..
Hi Robin, it's Martin again..you helped me with the ps2 game backups.
Well now, I'm having a problem with one of my games, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. My original disk couldn't load all the way, so instead, I found an ISO online and burned it to the disk. Playing it was smooth. So I saved my game from a file from 2006 i believe. Yesterday when I played it. The game is pretty open world so as I was skating to another city the game froze. I restarted it, the same thing.
But the next game, Megaman X8 works fine for all the time a spend playing that game, just some in-game lag which is normal for fighting multiple enemies.
The ps2 runs fine, I have it on the normal speed to read disks. The system start up is smooth, I cleaned it and everything.
Why isn't Tony Hawk working?
+Martin “Alex” Walker Hey Martin! It could be the save file that's corrupting rather than the disk itself unfortunately!
+robobin
That's seems like the only reasonable cause to my problem, because my playstation runs unbelievably smooth. Thank you
+Martin “Alex” Walker I have another suggestion! Try saving it to a different memory card as the memory card itself could be old/dying/mayyybe 3rd party? Let me know if you try it!
+robobin
ok. do you think my free mcboot memory card can save maybe 10 up to 15 game files? It's 8 mb
Sorry, Martin! Missed this comment again. You could try it :) I don't have anything else on my freemcboot except the exploit, but you could definitely try!
tutorial for playing games off usb plz???
Haha, sorry Hunter - I appreciate the compliment but I don't have any intention of doing a usb tutorial. You can however search youtube for "OPL USB PS2" and you should get the results you're looking for!
Be warned though, running games off usb could make cut scenes very choppy as the ps2 only has usb 1.0 ports, so as long as you don't mind that, fill your boots.
can u used ps1 back up burn games?
For the writing speed, is 1x good?
people told me 2x is needed
Ok so can I download a japanese ps1 game iso that was english fan translated/patched and burn it with esr onto a disc and have it run with free mcboot like this?
No. This is for PS2 games
Got policenauts do ya buddy?
Thats right, along with suikogaiden vol1-2 and the few others which I do plan to get as well.
Hi, nice ideo. Question, do these backups damage your system? I had two chip modded ps2s . They always damaged my ps2
Yeah the burned disks are tougher on the lasers, I suggest OPL instead of ESR if you can
@@robobin but is it worth it using ESR because of how fast it is instead of loading games from a USB using OPL? USB 1.1 is known to be extremely crap and I need your opinion on this. :(
You're really best off using a laptop and Ethernet cable with opl
Do I have to rip the import CD or can I just run straight through the free my boot ear launcher
HI, its compatible to my ps2 fat model SCPH 50003 ?
Thanks. Very easy to follow instructions
will this work for action replay max , and codebreaker
I can't get two games that I burned to boot. Does it matter if you use plus or minus blank dvds? I've used to plus and neither played.
Minus may work better but the brand also makes a difference. Same with burning speed. AND make sure you have a good iso rip which is why I burn from my own dvds
I'm looking at a modded PS2 on Ebay with a Free McBoot memory card and thinking about purchasing it, so would I eliminate some of the steps you have in your video? Because I would like to play Dragon Quest V on it as I already have an ISO image of Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hayomme(Japan), but English translated.
Well you only need the memory card, any ps2 model 7xxx and under will work, there's nothing special about the console. You still need to burn the iso to dvd and patch it with the ESR patcher to get it to play. Or use OPL and play it off usb.
Thanks a lot. By the way, great video!!!!
Thanks Junior! It's old now but it still does the trick and has all the relevant info :) Cheers, if you have any questions I'll try my best to answer em.
does anyone know if PAL games can be played on my NTSC ps2?
I think they can because my PS2 is PAL but it could NTSC games
Give it a try if U want
Yes they totally can. Had no issues playing Gregory Horror Show and Siren 2. That being said, you can't play native disks.
What dvd type should I use to burn the iso file?
Do you have any other links for the ESR disc patcher? None of the ones listed work :-(
do you have updated links for ESR?
Any esr.elf will work! www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15
This is what Google brought up when I searched 'esr.elf download'
I have a problem if I insert the USB into my ps2 and start it it gets stock on the freemcboot booting screen but with out the USB it goes all the way to the menu can you help me??
What is on the USB? If it's a copy of freemcboot then maybe the two copies are crashing the program
thank you so much it worked for me on Jak 3 but still one problem which is that I run ESR GUI from USB not from the PS2 menu can you help me please reply PLZ
Hi Zaki! Can you explain the problem in more detail? I think you'll get the same results if you run it from usb as from the memory card.
does this work with free mcboot 1.966?
If your TV doesn't support 50 hertz how do you get to that Blind part in the video that you have, do you have to wait a certain amount of time then hit X down X
Just do it slowly and it should work fine! Wait three to four seconds between each button press.
can you do the same with ps1 imports? maybe using a CD instead of a DVD?
RaulBillieJean- unfortunately the only way to run a ps1 backup game on ps2 is by using a modchip.
+robobin oh ok. that's a bummer.
Yeah indeed! However I believe that the PS3 is able to play all ps1 disks and is not reigon locked, but that wouldn't include backups. Sorry :)
Can I patch PS1 games? They will be read by the ESR on PS2?
my ESR picture size messes up when i play my burned disc HELP PLZ
I have never ever heard of that happening before! Describe it to me I'll try my best to help! What happens when you load ESR?
robobin So i put the burned game in and it automatically loads ESR then i press lauch cdvd then the colors, then everything is like on one side of the TV
That boggles my mind so hard! Does it do it with every game you try? Or only one game? I'd suggest replacing the ESR on your freemcboot memory card with the latest (I believe i have a link to one in my 'Show More' section.
robobin its every game
My suggestion is to replace the ESR.elf on your freemcboot by transferring it over with with a usb stick and uLaunchELF and try loading one of those burned games again.
interestingelectronics.net/2013/11/19/how-to-install-openps2loader/
This is how you copy the ESR.elf over (they're using OPL as an example but the ESR.elf works the same way) if you're not sure how to do it, using uLaunchELF
how long do you actually have to wait for the game to load? I'm trying this but my ps2 is stuck on a pink loading screen :(
Stuck on pink loading screen means it was a bad burn and that cd won't work
Will this work for games from another region without needing to rip and burn to a DVD-R?
Obviously not. Why would I go through ALL the effort of burning an out of region disk if I could just pop it in the PS2?
How about loading form a usb drive?
