I remember in the 1970s when Washington Street was a thriving business district, as was Hillcrest Plaza. Not to blame Poplar Bluff or its big box stores for the loss of those local businesses, but, well...it's the same misfortune that a lot of small towns have. Mom and Pop businesses are gone, people move out, and the downtown hollows out. I loved this little town so much. Still do, but it makes me sad to see the empty buildings.

My folks grew up in the area and we all think of it as an important part of our family history. I think when you do the planning, consider landscaping, especially around the courthouse. I am thrilled to see such wonderful community action.

"City was named after a Civil War Colonel." False. City was named after the General who led a Religious Genocide against the Mormons, and invaded Mexico, ironically inspiring the school mascot, "The Don". Town needs more than a new makeover, it needs a new name. The county FYI was named after a General who invaded Canada unsuccessfully, the Canadians have his personal belongings in a museum, ironically much nicer than the one in Doniphan, Mo.
