  • It may seem super strange that this knife trend ever came to be but there is rhyme to the reason. In this video I try and shed some light on why folks got so into this style of knife.

    Because modern people dont really need to use knives much beyond cutting tape off amazon boxes and opening envelopes. Both of which a sharpened pry bar will do. Subsequently, they were marketed an image of durability and strength, which men find appealing.

    Your videos are always pretty nostalgic to me. I think we got started around the same time back in the day and pretty much took on the same path or preference in the knives we got. It’s cool that my videos are still live and I can still look back at the progression of my collecting back then.

    Shit man, I don't think I've ever considered myself an elder until this video. I suppose I should get myself a rocking chair and a corncob pipe so I can whittle sticks on my front porch lol. Medford and Maxace make some of the gnarliest knives out there. Not sure I've gotten to that level of my journey yet

    Knife collectors were just getting bored with the slow period after the button lock and the "Axis" lock became widespread available. We see a fickle bunch.
    So the overbuilt knife appeared to be new and fill a need.
    But I believe the fad is already fading away, partly because most of us just don't carry these boat anchors as EDC knives.
    I'm eagerly awaiting the next "new thing"...l think it might be pivot locks on a variety of blade shapes.

      Overbuilt knives already faded away about 5 years ago. Now we are in the small, slicey, and fidgety era. Big emphasis on small batch CNC knives.

    It’s functional art. It’s to make a bold statement. To use watches as a comparison, if you look at some of the ridiculous Jacob’s & co watches, it gets harder and harder to actually read the time on them 😂 no one is buying them because it’s an efficient watch. It’s just to show off and admire the craftsmanship.

    • @windowbreezes
      @windowbreezes Місяць тому

      then it shouldnt be called Functional Art. It very loosely is.

    Like you need more knives than you own right now. Most ppl will never use all the knives they have at home even if they are not into this hobby. Just go for it (if you can afford it).

    I also am an overbuilt enthusiast; I actually am carrying my Geddon right now 😆. I got my first Swiss Army knife when I was 11. Practical is great sure; however, I treat them worse because I don't care about that knife. I was a mechanic for 22yrs its important to love your tools, they last longer if you take care of them. I am no longer a mechanic I am now an engineer, but I still carry a knife just now I will not buy super practical. My daily beater is an Artisan Proponent carbon fiber scales nothing crazy. it gets any job done and I love the knife win win.
    Edit: I did get the Geddon just so I could see what it was like to butter my toast with an anvil.

    Other than for conversation pieces, I don't see any practicality of owning such knives. Especially when for the price of those over built knives you can buy several edc style knives that are very practical to use. Not to dissuade anyone to buy them, basically saying to each their own.
