  • The amazing Italian Solari Dator 10 vintage Flip Clock is all back together with everything working, and slaved to new high precision electronics. I set it on interesting dates that will flip the whole clock. Also a demo of the leap year capability. In principle, the clock can operate for 200 years without any date adjustment.

    Much better sounding than a cuckoo. Most satisfying! 😁

    I remember reading about these... great to see one in action! There were the old pneumatic versions too, in Paris I believe. They're featured in an article on the Museum of Retrotech website.

    Yes, I was thinking, what about 29 February, aka the Leap Year.
    Fascinating.

    I have just acquired this wonderful clock. I can't seem to remove the back of it. Is there a latch? I can't see one. Thanks for your help.

    i love your clock!!! has it been reliable, or has it been high maintenance since you went thru it? thanks again for posting the video. they don't make them like they used to..

      +Jason van Dalen Totally reliable. It's been our main house clock since then. These things are industrial strength. It's good for another 50 years I think. It's noisy... Clink - it's a minute. Clank - 10 minutes. Clonk flap - an hour. Clooooonk flap flap flap flap - midnight!

    Hello Marc , your controller is very interesting ! Where did you buy it ?

    I can't help wondering why it has facility for 40 day months. (perhaps, if I watch the whole series, I will find out)

    • @CuriousMarc
      @CuriousMarc  6 років тому +9

      +edgeeffect: Easy. It's "mechanical logic". It needs to display 9, 19, and 29, in the days of the month, so the right paddles have to count up to 9. It has also to display 30 and 31, so the left paddle has to go up to 3. Paddles only flip forward, counting up. So when you are at 31 and need to go back to 00, the only mechanical way is to count up to 39 flipping the paddles, then one more to 00. So you temporarily go through day 39. It's very clever. There is a spring mechanism that winds up and stores energy during the earlier part of the month, so it has enough energy in store to do the multi-flip at the end of the month. That mechanism is shown in part 3 here: ua-cam.com/video/fbsXvy5lUvk/v-deo.html

    Great job and very cool to combine modern electronics with the vintage flip mechanism. How did you manage to acquire the correct modern electronics to interface with this clock?

    • @CuriousMarc
      @CuriousMarc  7 років тому

      I just custom made the electronics myself...

      Yep, he is! The basic concept is simple enough though. All it needs to operate is a 60 second timer that sends a pulse every 60 seconds. The controller to advance it, is simply another pulse generator that is customisable, to allow advancement.

    Hello Marc. It is very fabulous.May I have a question? To make the impulsing board, what do I need to do?

    • @CuriousMarc

      My pulser circuit design details are published on my website: www.curiousmarc.com/mechanical/dator-10-flip-clock#h.m0o5q5e7c77s

      @@CuriousMarc Thank you.So just need the board and the hex file(looks like eeprom some sort?)?

    • @CuriousMarc

      Also I had to make a small interface board with two relays to switch the +12V and -12V pulses, but I just hand soldered it and did not document it.

      @@CuriousMarc Thank you very much. I think I should study how to make it as yours. Can you specify the board name and explain a little bit about that?

      @@solariudine5034 It’s an old development board from Olimex. Not made anymore but you could find some on eBay maybe.
