I've been a Fates Warning fan since 1985, and remember well when No Exit came out, Ray was so hungry on that album, especially side two: The Ivory Gates Of Dreams. Ray's voice has mellowed over the past 30 years, and his range has naturally dropped a little bit, as all vocalists do with age, but Ray Alder has been, and always will be one of the greatest vocalists heavy metal has ever known.
James Estrada I look at the two eras of Fates Warning like the two eras of Iron Maiden... Dickinson is certainly a better vocalist than Paul DiAnno... but you can't take away the contribution DiAnno made with Maiden. I like Maidens debut, Killers, and Maiden Japan just as much as anything with Bruce. Do I like Parallels or Perfect Symmetry, or Inside Out better than Night On Brocken, or The Specter Within? Yes. But I don't take away the contribution of Arch on those albums in Fates history. But, to each their own I guess. Best Regards.
I like Jon too. Check out Arch/Matheos' latest album, Winter Ethereal (which is basically a Fates Warning album without Ray, but with every member Fates has had).
Maybe the most underrated, he and Steve Overland. But you know something? Poor are the rock followers who never cared for Fates Warning, because if they did they'd fall in love.
That's right Scott Dunn, comments youre going to see here get real stuff for, great comments here because we are serious about our music to the core just like the band s at work to share the real stuff they work hard for. Ray does us all right with what he has done separate from other projects, what a gift to us he works so hard for!
Ray is OK, but nowhere near the range and technique of the other Fates vocalist, Jon Arch. I would recommend the last Arch/Matheos album, Winter Ethereal (which is in fact an extended Fates Warning album, with all former and actual members except Ray). Nevertheless, "Crown Of Thorns" is an amazing song and I already ordered the album. Can't wait.
I really want to learn to enjoy John Arch's voice, and I do really love his ballsy low range on Damnation, but his usual high voice does nothing for me. Labrie has amazing technique as well, but I don't love listening to him. I suppose it's like comparing Satriani with SRV... Ray's voice has warmth and feeling and is more pleasing to my ear. Frank Sinatra was a great technical singer. Dean Martin had a wonderful voice.
@@vladimirstanescu6616 It's amazing how Arch fans have to shit on Ray even when it's not even a Fates video. I like Arch with Arch/Matheos, but Ray is far more interesting and versatile as a vocalist. So glad he joined Fates in the 80s, the band improved when him and Mark joined
It's amazing how you twist my reply. I love Ray, I have all his albums with Redemption and Fates Warning, besides What the Water Wants. Fates is my favourite band of all times, with Ray, Arch and whatever drummer, they are all exceptional artists. I only said that Arch has more range and technique and is slightly more suited to this genre. Ray is best in the medium vocal range, but I love him too, why do you say I sh*t on him ? By far my favorite singer also a great human being. Saw them at Brick by Brick in San Diego a ways back. Hung out at the end of the show and talked with him and the rest of Fates Warning after the show. It was uncharacteristically cold in San Diego that night, Ray was freezing his ass off but still wanted to talk to us. So I gave him my jacket to wear so he didn't catch cold. When he gave it back I was hoping to get some of his singing mojo; alas that mojo is only meant for Ray so I'll stick to guitar, lol.
Countless bands that are technically good, if not great, have faded away. But few have really endured. Ray brings a very enduring quality to all the various projects he has been involved in. He brings soul. The emotion he breathes into his songs has kept me coming ba k time & time again.
