I really have to say that your videos are very entertaining and creative. And this video was probably the most helpful one! It covers all the points you need to know and, to be honest, I've been thinking about becoming an exchange students, and your video actually convinced my parents to think about an exchange. Thank you!! Please, keep making awesome videos. ^^
I'm due for this August around the 17th (date not 100% yet). I'm Australian (boy) and am kinda scared of the language barrier because I've experienced it a lot through hosting Japanese students and attending my schools cultural exchange. I was wondering if you have any study advice? Also I'm in the waiting period >.> it sucks.... If anyone else reads this I was accepted with 1 failed subject soooooo dw about it :)... just, don't fail every subject or anything like that ._.
Brush up on sentence structures and casual phrases / slangs in Japan. Those will come in handy when starting conversations with people. Learn your hiragana & katakana well before learning anything else. Also, try not to memorise from books too much, try to understand every word and speak as much as possible before your departure (maybe to your Japanese friends or even to yourself). Good luck!
If you haven't already check out Yuta Aoki's channel I'd suggest doing so; Yuta is all about learning "real" Japanese rather than learning textbook Japanese. He teaches you things that a textbook wouldn't and I think that's a little more comforting than a textbook, haha! also check out Abroad in Japan's "Speaking Japanese Fluently in 6 Months" and "12 Tips for Learning Japanese." He's funny but also really helpful!
This might be late, but here are a handful of questions 1. Do i have to pay for stuff like the uniform and books? Or will that be included in the fee? 2. What will they do if you get caught breaking rules? Warning or sent back early? 3. Is it ok if i dont listen in class? 4. Assuming I took a one year trip, and that finished, will I repeat a year in my country's school in the following schoolyear?
for my exchange, uniforms are not included in the fees. im not sure about books if you get caught breaking the rules you have 2 warnings, then you will be sent home. though it depends on the severity of what you did, its possible to get sent home without a warning. a lot of the time you wont have to actually participate in most classes so yes - unless they specifically ask you to pay attention to this class. im going during year 13, and when i come back i will have to do year 13 again. hope that helps?
Nope, Japan was not what I expected, it turned out to be a whole new learning experience for me. I didn't really have much of an expectation as I went on exchange with an open mind. Things in real life were different from what I saw / read about online, but in a good way.
hmm... first time I actually watch long video about exchange program...... usually when watch other people video I skipped a lot but not yours even its long still good haha
i live in singapore and im just DYING to go to japan for a student exchage programme. Here, education in REALLY important but i dont know when i should apply without missing any years of secondary school and JC :< what should i do :"'
You can go on exchange after graduating high school like me or like most exchange students, take a gap year and go on exchange first before university or in your case, JC :)
Euodias Thank you so much!! you are so beautiful and so talented ( espicially in languages, like how 7 ?!?) thank you for your awesome videos, inspiring us (like meee) and we will always continue to support you!! :3
Astral Sky AFS didn't allow me to go after graduation at all! How did they let you please help!! I emailed them before hand asking if it was ok is that what you did?
I'm going to Japan for my exchange in march (by afs, too!) so this is something I really need lmao especially the opening speech omg u saved a life. The only problem is probably I wouldn't be able to have a courage to actually break the rules because I got a scholarship and I don't wanna let them down lmao but THANK YOU SO MUCH for this!! Anyway whoever reading this pls wish me luck lol;-;)/
Found this video, cause I spontaneously signed up for a scholarship in Japan(via YFU), I didn't expect to actually get it lol. I'm usually a shy person, and I was getting pretty worried about, just everything(still excited though). Your videos just got me even more excited and reassured me, especially with school stuff 😊
I have a question, what are the age restrictions for exchange? like what's the max. age you can be to be a highschool exchange student? Also, can you apply after highschool in your own country?
Euodias I'm 16 now, and when I graduate I will be 17, almost 18. Do I have to be 17 when I go on the exchange or only when I apply first? Also, thank you for responding so fast!
For most exchange companies, you have to be below 18 before you depart. They might give you a leeway if you turn 18 during the end of your exchange, like me. But if not, you'd be better off with university exchanges or a company like ASSE as they are alright with older exchange students. (18-19)
Lmao you don't know this but some Japanese kids are evil man. They wake you up at like 2 in the morning, laugh when you wake up all tired and then cry when you ask them to go to bed. They throw tissues and pour ice water on you when you nap and act all innocent when their parents come back. (And yes it happened to me lmao)
Thank you so much. Your videos helped me to go on my AFS Japan exchange, when I was going through a bad time your videos always made me hopeful and happy. I am now 1 month until I leave:)
How can I raise money for this? I'm aiming to go for a gap year, but my family is poor and we don't have the amount of money needed to go. Any tips? I can't really go around doors selling things at the moment. I really want to go!
1) AFS doesn't cover Visa fees except in the case of KLYES program 2) Scholarships are also offered according to the country (Portugal, Hyngary, Latin America etc) you want to go to and for applying early (early bird scholarship). 3) AFS recommends not to carry a laptop to the host country.
Im guessing you’re 13 atm, I wanna study abroad in Japan, Im currently 11 turning 12 In January. However im not sure if there are any companies that allow that or so to say. Anyway did you get to study abroad?
ive been waiting for a video like this for MONTHS!! thank you so much, the wifi, phone and period thing, along with the basic introduction will help me so much. Thank you!
This makes me even more excited to exchange to japan!! I’ve been learning Japanese for the last 3 years in England and I’m just so excited. I’ve never been there before and I’m going for the long term option. I’m most excited for making new friends and learning about the culture❤️
So, if I want to do a foreign exchange year in 10th grade, do I need to apply when I'm in the 9th? The problem I found with that is I will be 14 at the time of applying (being in the 9th grade) but when it actually comes to the trip I'll be 15. Does it matter your age when you apply as long as you are 15-17 by the time of departure? I'm assuming the wait for the response is a year or more, so that's why you'd apply beforehand. Can you go on class trips outside of your region? Can you take after school activities (example dance, swim, martial arts, etc) with a host family? Will I need to retake the year when I get back? Like, will I end up taking 5 years of high school because I took that exchange year? If so, as you know it's possible to graduate high school in 3 years. Could I technically finish the curriculum in 9th, 11th and 12th but 10th would be my unavailable year? I don't really know how to explain it clearly lol, but if you did a 3 year hs, you'd graduate in 11th grade, but instead of graduating 1 year early, just take an exchange year. Only assuming that a foreign exchange year doesn't count towards your credits. Does this information change from company to company? Like will some companies get credits from the exchange year and others won't, etc. Thank you
Yes to everything, but the 'do I have to retake it or can I study the local program and the exchange year at the same time' depends on your school and grades. Usually people retake the year though, so if you go exchange 10th and go back home then you do 10th again and move on to 11th. (Also I'm 14 and in the system, would be 15 when leaving ^^)
As an AFS student that will be going to Japan in 2019 and staying there for an entire year, this was very helpful! The fact that you went with AFS made the process of understanding everything so much easier as I've been through it myself and since we're visiting the same country I cannot even begin to explain how helpful and educating your videos on the country are. Thank you so much!
Hello Euodias, so you went to Japan exchange for the last year of school right? How did you manage your academics (IB/A-levels) at such an intense period where you have to get good grades and apply for uni? Also- just curious, how in the world do you know sooo many languages, which uni do you go to, and what major/minor do you take?
I have my afs interview on Sunday and I'm not sure how I should present myself. I'm rather introverted although I reallyyy wouldn't want to have an introverted host family as well. It's better for me to have a more open and lively one. Also, are you aware of any traits that might make the representatives turn away from choosing a student? Thanks :))
Hm..well shyness is not what they're looking for. Try to be confident, mature and have a good command of English (or whatever language they interview you in) as much as possible. Companies are usually looking for people who are easy-going, chill, open-minded and have a sense of humour.
@@olivia8231 hi, sorry for asking for this a year later and sorry if this makes you uncomfortable but are you smart? I just wanted to know because I want to know if really smart people get go in and I'm just very SCARED. Thank you! Also how was your experience
@@olivia8231 ik actually applied and i just need to pass 2 INTERVIEWS. I'm so scared because if i had the interview that will be my 1 interview in my life
Well I am living in Luxembourg (in Europe, not a lot of people know about us since we are a pretty small country lol) and I was always wondering how I could do an exchange. I still have 2 and half year left before I'm going to university and by then I will be 20. I guess I just do an exchange when I'm in university 😂 Edit: our education system is kinda different from other countries, we learn about 4 languages in school and high school here is longer than in other countries and that's why we are mostly older than other students when we enter university.
This was extremely helpful for me because I depart to Japan next week and i was freaking out like "what if I take the wrong bus or get lost" and stuff but this made me finally calm down a bit. Also let's say you are going to be in an exchange program during school in your home country, would you have to retake that grade or will going to the exchange school count as that grade?
Hi, I'm currently learning japanese and I'd recommend to learn how to read and write hiragana and katakana first. Once you learn how to read and write them with ease, you can move onto learning basic phrases and sentences structures and eventually start learning different kanji. (I hope this helps in some way)
I just started learning some Japanese at home to get ready for high school where I will be taking 2 years of it. I'ts been really fun so far but confusing, like I'm having trouble learning to wright out the words I'm saying and understanding others when they say something. I'm really excited because I want to work really hard and get into the exchange program to go to japan. I kinda want to live there someday. It looks like so much fun and people are so nice, the food looks super cool. You even get vending machines in school!! I think the idea of the new culture looks super cool like the slippers for around the house and indoor and outdoor shoes and that you get to wear uniforms. Plus that everything is clean and orderly. SO MUCH KAWAII !! I'm afraid I won't be accepted because not everyone gets to go. And I have bad anxiety and I get super scared when people ask me questions cause I'm afraid my answer won't cut it (be good enough) or I'll say the wrong thing. And I get super scared of other people, I'm kinda paranoid and think other people are out to get me because of where I live and my school. Kids are so mean and if you glance at someone they get mad and cuss at you. Plus, if your the shy type (like me) or any different from the "popular kids" or don't wear clothes like them they target you and make fun of you or pick on you. So...I hope they are not like that in japan, then again, not the whole world is like where I live I'ts just what I'm used to. But they look really nice there. Also, when you apply like you said sometimes they won't answer for up to half a year or year, what if you're applying in like 11th grade and you won't get to go until a year later and I'ts already to late? Like you're about to graduate.
euoooo ur my role model since foreverrr. being an exchange student has always been my dreams since a very long time and i think ur the one influencing it the most. your videos are really helpful and i love ur personality🥺🥺🥺 thank u so much
Every host family will have their own set of rules and yes curfews too. But fortunately for me, I had very chill host fams so I don't really have a curfew and was given quite a lot of freedom as well.
Omgg I went to japan on exchange in high school and because I was the oldest exchange student I had to do two speeches and talk to the principal one on one 😩 great video!!
so funny thing is....I DIDNT AT ALL SKIPPED ANYTHING AND JUST STRAIGHT SAW THE WHOLE 30 MINUTES 33 SECONDS VIDEO AND I'M SO SHOOKETH I LOVE YOU AND JUST YOU'RE AMAZING !!! KEEP DOING YOU CAUSE YOU'RE FUNNY, AWESOME AND EVRYTHING GREAT ABOUT YOU AND OMG YOUR LUCK THO IS ACTUALLY *CHEFS KISS* LIKE MANMAN DAYUM omg oops i just realised i typed all thst in caps but um..YEA WHO CARES CAUSE I'M RLLY ENERGETIC LMFAO
Rewatching this video again ahha, This is one of my biggest regrets which was learning japanese 1 year too late... If i had signed up for my japanese course a year earlier I could've gone on an exchange without the interference of my final exams... UGGH I could've gone last year, but i started japanese last year and this year was my final year at school...
I have athsma but I haven't taken my inhaler for months and I've been fine. So does that mean I could go (since I've got good grades and I'm physically strong)
Thank you for this video! I have a question about going on an exchange to Japan: I'm half Japanese, half English, and I really want to experience a Japanese high school life, and meet new friends as I may plan to life there in the future. I live in England but my Japanese isn't amazing and I hardly know much kanji, although I can read hiragana and katana well. Do you think that I won't be able to go? Many thanks and this is such an amazing, informative video! Many thanks
this video is super helpful! I have a feeling to be an exchange student as I watch your videos recently. It's very fun to watch and I can't believe that I didn't skip this 30 minutes video of you!
I've been considering going on exchange to Japan with AFS but I'm not 100% really sure yet, I'd really like to experience Japan and make new friends. (And lmao AFS has no chill) But do you think the experiences you had were worth it? What was your favourite thing about it? This vid was very helpful, thanks for making it!
For me it was worth it, even though I had tons of problems with AFS. Favourite part about exchange was the friends I've made of course :) But going on exchange is not the same for everyone, some hated it, some loved it and some were bored. It's also risky and dangerous, there are students who pass away on exchange as well. If you're serious about exchange, go into it with an open mind because you'd never know what's gonna happen. But it's fun to test yourself sometimes so good luck and make the best out of it :)
Euodias wow, that's awful. I'm sorry for the loss if you knew him :/ And not to be suspicious or anything but did AFS prohibited you from saying that? They're low-key yakuzas or something
When writing the exchange letter to your host family, is it okay to write in all hiragana and katakana? Or should I still put in kanji, even though I haven't learned it yet? What alphabet did you use to put in your letter when you still didn't know kanji?
You can definitely just write the whole letter using Hiragana, it's fine. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. As for me, I can speak Mandarin so kanji was a total breeze for me to learn.
Also how should u tell ur host family if u don't like a certain food they have or what should u do if u don't like a food but don't want to offend them?
Caroline533 you should probably eat it just to be polite, as another exchange video i watched said: "if they feed you a baby octopus, eat the baby octopus."
Kristeau i was fortunate enough to have a Japanese high school teacher who was friends with these teachers at a high school in japan so I didn’t need to go through a company
Trinity Parady if you're with afs, most likely no. the way afs is, they pair you up based on your personality, and most families do not want more than 1 student. but if you go on a more local program for a few weeks or so, i know friends who have stayed w the same host family for a few days!
I wonder if I can still apply for scholarship even if my parents’ income isn’t below average and I’m not a genius?🤨and is the interview in english or my native language??
Thanks for the video, it was super informative and helped me out a lot, although I still have a few questions which would be great if you could clarify! :D -I've heard that most schools in Japan require you to join a club, did you have to join a club? How long did club meetings last after school? -Were you provided with school uniforms or did you have to pay? -Did you take an extra year of high school when you returned to your original school in order to catch up? Did you take summer courses? -When you were in Japan, did you have to complete schoolwork and projects? Thanks! :D
Oh, one more! Were there other exchange students staying at the same host school/living nearby? Also, what grade should you submit your application in?
Most universities in the UK provide exchanges to Japan. Some high schools in the UK are also affiliated with Japanese high schools so you might want to ask your school about it.
So I can get a scholarship from AFS if I go to Japan in an exchange? (My mom's jobless, and we don't have a man in the house and yes, we are quite poor ) And there is time for me to apply, but if I know I don't have enough money to pay for it, can I still apply? The schools where you were in, how did they react to you? How would they react to completely different looking people?? How about shy people? Btw, love your videos
Wanda Bednarski I‘m not sure if I‘m already too late, but I knew who was in the same situation. She applied for many scholarships and did quite a lot if things to get the money needed. (fund-raising campaign in the church she worked as a volunteer, side jobs etc) I think the most important thing is that you actually want it and DO something for it
I little confused when writing a essay do you write in your first language or the language in place your going? And what kind of gifts do you bring for the host family?
19:21 How- the whole time you we’re talking about hobbies I was saying I like badminton and dancing (I also like swimming but I learned just last summer so those two are what i like and good at)
Even though it could be very hard transitioning into a new country, culture and language, I think it could also be a very good way to overcome your anxieties. So you shouldn't let that stop you from following your exchange dream :D.
this was really helpful, thank you! the only part that made me nervous to think about was the initial interview and also the letter in Japanese to the potential host family. but, that is a really minor worry compared to the experience you get to have!
I have a question. I don't know if it will get answered or not because I'm kinda late. Lol. When you want to exchange do you have to be in a school? Like I am homeschooled would I have to transfer to a public or private school?
Jimin flavored jams I just misunderstood, I apologise, but with that attitude, I don't think anyone will like you in Japan. I just made a mistake... EDIT: Hold on, I didn't misunderstand, she/he said would they either transfer to a public or private school since they're homeschooled. So, I replied with what I said above, it doesn't matter if you're home schooled, it's not your decision to choose your school. You got to be able to adapt to whatever school they give you. Also, every program is different. Some program require you to be enrolled in school and these kind of special cases like bring home schooled most likely requires you to contact the program managers. In addition, it might depend on why you're being home schooled. If you have any health problems, depression, anxiety then it might be a bit more harder to pass the application process than someone who is more healthy and have a healthy mind. Some might reject you as I've researched many programs that say you have to be both physically and mentally healthy. Sorry about the negativity above, I'm just kinda mad. I hope this helped you guys and I hope you guys don't hate me.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m new to the channel. My first video was your kpop audition. I really want to do exchange into Japan, and this was extremely useful. Thanks again 😊
Hello! You said you need to be healthy, does that just mean physical? or mental too? I have depression so I need to take pills, would that prohibit me from being able to enter?
Both physically and mentally. If you can keep your depression under control (note that some people get more depressed on exchange), then you can try to go on exchange.
tip for anyone looking into an exchange: see if your city has any sister cities! i personally got super lucky in that my city has three. each year, each country sends delegates for 2 weeks to visit the other city and learn about their culture. i went on one of the trips, and when I got back, i simply contacted their local exchange office (in japanese) inquiring about whether or not they do long term exchanges. this is a really good option for those of you who don't want to pay thousands of dollars in fees!

He teaches you things that a textbook wouldn't and I think that's a little more comforting than a textbook, haha! also check out Abroad in Japan's "Speaking Japanese Fluently in 6 Months" and "12 Tips for Learning Japanese." He's funny but also really helpful!
hey, I'm also going to Japan that date! what program/company are you with?

This might be late, but here are a handful of questions
Good questions, I.. don’t know
damn those are good questions
uniforms are included
for my exchange, uniforms are not included in the fees. im not sure about books
if you get caught breaking the rules you have 2 warnings, then you will be sent home. though it depends on the severity of what you did, its possible to get sent home without a warning.
a lot of the time you wont have to actually participate in most classes so yes - unless they specifically ask you to pay attention to this class.
im going during year 13, and when i come back i will have to do year 13 again.
hope that helps?
Rose Ik this is late but are exchange programs availed worldwide? Like can we apply from any country
in the video you said, " don't be mad if japan is not what you expected". Was Japan what you expected? If not, how did you expect it to be?
Nope, Japan was not what I expected, it turned out to be a whole new learning experience for me. I didn't really have much of an expectation as I went on exchange with an open mind. Things in real life were different from what I saw / read about online, but in a good way.
Euodias thanks! that was helpful 😁👌
hmm... first time I actually watch long video about exchange program...... usually when watch other people video I skipped a lot but not yours even its long still good haha
Thank you!
i live in singapore and im just DYING to go to japan for a student exchage programme.
I'd like to know this as well
I don't think u would want to be held back by a year even after jc though.... might b difficult in continuing ur education
GUYS I DID IT I GOT IN JAPAN IM SO HAPPY THANK YOUUUU
How was it
Congratulations
how was the experience?? :)

I only am allowed to get a and b so im still happy :D
I’m grateful lmao
Found this video, cause I spontaneously signed up for a scholarship in Japan(via YFU), I didn't expect to actually get it lol. I'm usually a shy person, and I was getting pretty worried about, just everything(still excited though). Your videos just got me even more excited and reassured me, especially with school stuff 😊
how was ur experience then ?
I have a question, what are the age restrictions for exchange? like what's the max. age you can be to be a highschool exchange student? Also, can you apply after highschool in your own country?
As long as you are between the ages of 15-17, you are eligible for most highschool exchange programs.
Euodias Ah, okay :) Thank you! And which company did you go through?
I was with AFS :)
the flip phone thing is interesting, i'm w AFS and almost no one i know was provided w a flip phone 🤔ur lucky girl!!
also, knowing the word イケメン is so useful for friends 😂😂
I think you need to ask for it. I know it bc I traveled with AFS.
13:30 "they didn't really do anything to me"
LOOOOOOL like what? XD
Euodias wtf, really I cant belive that. lmao tho?! 😂 one day tell us about the time that this happened to you! really enjoying your videos👍
Euodias I would have Molly whop those kids in front of their parents if they did that to me tf💯
I can't believe the effort you've put in this, especially the example of the speech. This is so informative. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Your videos helped me to go on my AFS Japan exchange, when I was going through a bad time your videos always made me hopeful and happy. I am now 1 month until I leave:)
How did you learn Japanese. Did you use an online software or website/app or did you take a class or have a tutor teach you
calebthemindreader I think she said in one of her videos that she learned her languages when she was a kid that's why she's fluent
Lol my name is caleb to, hi caleb.
How can I raise money for this?
I'm aiming to go for a gap year, but my family is poor and we don't have the amount of money needed to go.
Any tips? I can't really go around doors selling things at the moment. I really want to go!
Sign up for a scholarship. Or try your best to work to save up the money.
Ah, thank you!
Hey, what's up right now? I'm in the same situation too.
I'm going to china for a scholarship in a couple months for an entire year D: Hope I survive ;D
Ariel Volovik how’d it go?
hope you had fun !
How did it go?
I'm sorry if this has already been asked but, do the high schools allow headscarfs/hijabs to be worn inside the schools?
Yes it's fine though some students might ask you insensitive questions about that.
+Euodias thank youuuuuu 😊
1) AFS doesn't cover Visa fees except in the case of KLYES program
2) Scholarships are also offered according to the country (Portugal, Hyngary, Latin America etc) you want to go to and for applying early (early bird scholarship).
3) AFS recommends not to carry a laptop to the host country.
I really want to be a exchange student sound fun I really want to go to Japan or South Korea.
But I'm 11
Im guessing you’re 13 atm, I wanna study abroad in Japan, Im currently 11 turning 12 In January. However im not sure if there are any companies that allow that or so to say. Anyway did you get to study abroad?
@@user-hf2vz6qu4g usually you have to be 15+ but some make acceptions with 14

When youre asian turning 18 means nothing
DIYyourthings __ Why ?
ikr lmao
But, in my (asian) country it means that your already an adult and your free to do anything you want... :T
Honestly relatable.
Thank you
I wish you would of asked this 3 years ago these are good questions😂
Yes to everything, but the 'do I have to retake it or can I study the local program and the exchange year at the same time' depends on your school and grades. Usually people retake the year though, so if you go exchange 10th and go back home then you do 10th again and move on to 11th. (Also I'm 14 and in the system, would be 15 when leaving ^^)
@@kirkkek what if i do it during summer will that still make me repeat??
@@stnkshere7015 If you go during summer it won't be a full school year, so that's an entirely different category if I'm not mistaken.
The only one I can answer here is that I'm pretty sure you can do school activities.
I'm not Euodias lol but in one of her videos she said that she just absorbed those languages since she was really little.
I want to study abroad 2019-2020, when should I apply though? It sounds like it takes a year or two.
Apply one year before your departure so 2018 would be ideal if you want to study abroad from 2019 to 2020 :)
I want to go on exchange but I'm confused about the school uniforms what do they provide do you have to pay for them?
I have my afs interview on Sunday and I'm not sure how I should present myself. I'm rather introverted although I reallyyy wouldn't want to have an introverted host family as well. It's better for me to have a more open and lively one. Also, are you aware of any traits that might make the representatives turn away from choosing a student? Thanks :))
Hm..well shyness is not what they're looking for. Try to be confident, mature and have a good command of English (or whatever language they interview you in) as much as possible. Companies are usually looking for people who are easy-going, chill, open-minded and have a sense of humour.
Euodias I just got my afs acceptance email yesterday, and I’m leaving in 6 months.... All of your videos have really helped, thank you so much :)
HOW IS IT?
@@olivia8231 hi, sorry for asking for this a year later and sorry if this makes you uncomfortable but are you smart? I just wanted to know because I want to know if really smart people get go in and I'm just very SCARED. Thank you! Also how was your experience

Well I am living in Luxembourg (in Europe, not a lot of people know about us since we are a pretty small country lol) and I was always wondering how I could do an exchange. I still have 2 and half year left before I'm going to university and by then I will be 20. I guess I just do an exchange when I'm in university 😂
Edit: our education system is kinda different from other countries, we learn about 4 languages in school and high school here is longer than in other countries and that's why we are mostly older than other students when we enter university.
VickisMe O same, the Netherlands tho
4?! We only get 2 and even then we don’t really learn the second language well 😂
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!! I'm going for a full year exchange starting from mid year next year and I honestly needed this. Thank you so much!
This was extremely helpful for me because I depart to Japan next week and i was freaking out like "what if I take the wrong bus or get lost" and stuff but this made me finally calm down a bit. Also let's say you are going to be in an exchange program during school in your home country, would you have to retake that grade or will going to the exchange school count as that grade?
how was ur experience!!
Hi, how did you learn/start learning Japanese? Like did you start learning phrase/words or hiragana and katakana? I'm so lost rn 😂😂
Hi, I'm currently learning japanese and I'd recommend to learn how to read and write hiragana and katakana first. Once you learn how to read and write them with ease, you can move onto learning basic phrases and sentences structures and eventually start learning different kanji. (I hope this helps in some way)
This video is the best exchange year-information video I´ve ever seen! Thanks:)
Kay when you said people cuss you out at school I thought your were talking about school in Japan
I will be so scared for the interview....
euoooo ur my role model since foreverrr. being an exchange student has always been my dreams since a very long time and i think ur the one influencing it the most. your videos are really helpful and i love ur personality🥺🥺🥺 thank u so much
Does the rule about adultery include having a bf/gf in general or just not to someone that is in a relationship? Like are u allowed to date at all?
A fellow Otaku-san: I've been wondering that too
This is a very useful video! I love all your videos!!😘
Did your host families ever allow you to go out and hang with friends? If so, did you have a curfew or something? (btw love your videos💕)
Every host family will have their own set of rules and yes curfews too. But fortunately for me, I had very chill host fams so I don't really have a curfew and was given quite a lot of freedom as well.

I love how specific you are. Thanks for the video!
Many thanks
The language requirements are different depending on what program you use, but most do not require you to have any language experience at all.
this video is super helpful! I have a feeling to be an exchange student as I watch your videos recently. It's very fun to watch and I can't believe that I didn't skip this 30 minutes video of you!
would mental health be a struggle? i have moderate ocd and sensory issues :p
My mom said I could be an exchange student if I become fluent in Japanese and I'm sooo excited omg
Euodias Thanks for answering! And did you mean that seriously, how can someone pass away on exchange?
He got into a car accident during a school trip. I'm not allowed to say anymore than that.
Euodias wow, that's awful. I'm sorry for the loss if you knew him :/ And not to be suspicious or anything but did AFS prohibited you from saying that? They're low-key yakuzas or something
Zoute Cocoreskoekjes I think it's just something private despite AFS prohibiting or not, not a subject whoever would share easily
I am waiting AFS admission letter. I only choose Japan. I hopen it comes. Love you, Zehra from Turkey
Hi! I got a full AFS scholarship to go to Japan and I'm going next year . really glad I found this video and thank you for the advice!
00100 4458q6: I have a question! What kind of things did you do to get a full scholarship?
How was it??
Do you have to know all three writing/reading systems (hiragana, katakana, and kanji)? And how well does your vocabulary/Japanese have to be?
and also thank you so much this video is SUPER helpful!
You don't have to but it's recommended that you do. Like I said, every company has different language criteria so do the research yourself :)
Also how should u tell ur host family if u don't like a certain food they have or what should u do if u don't like a food but don't want to offend them?
Caroline533 you should probably eat it just to be polite, as another exchange video i watched said: "if they feed you a baby octopus, eat the baby octopus."
You're a real blessing. I go on exchange in December for 6 weeks (not through AFS though) and I was truly shitting myself before this so THANK YOU
Could u tell me which company you went through?
Kristeau i was fortunate enough to have a Japanese high school teacher who was friends with these teachers at a high school in japan so I didn’t need to go through a company
Can you go on exchange with a friend and stay with the same host family?
Trinity Parady if you're with afs, most likely no. the way afs is, they pair you up based on your personality, and most families do not want more than 1 student. but if you go on a more local program for a few weeks or so, i know friends who have stayed w the same host family for a few days!
Camilla Pernell Thank you :)
Touch them, interact with them, take pic, break the ice**.....
MAIN POINT**: It makes the picture looks NICER
Thanks tho, I really learned alot!!!!!!
I wanna be an exchange students in 2 years from now, when should I start signing up?
YOU'RE A GODDESS THANK YOU SO MUCH ILY
I wonder if I can still apply for scholarship even if my parents’ income isn’t below average and I’m not a genius?🤨and is the interview in english or my native language??
Thanks for the video, it was super informative and helped me out a lot, although I still have a few questions which would be great if you could clarify! :D
-I've heard that most schools in Japan require you to join a club, did you have to join a club? How long did club meetings last after school?
-Were you provided with school uniforms or did you have to pay?
-Did you take an extra year of high school when you returned to your original school in order to catch up? Did you take summer courses?
-When you were in Japan, did you have to complete schoolwork and projects?
Thanks! :D
Oh, one more! Were there other exchange students staying at the same host school/living nearby? Also, what grade should you submit your application in?
I wonder about the same things!
Any tips on applying for an exchange from the UK or is it just like you explained cause I can't seem to find any programs???
Most universities in the UK provide exchanges to Japan. Some high schools in the UK are also affiliated with Japanese high schools so you might want to ask your school about it.
This is incredible, it made me feel so confident about going to Japan as an exchange student, thank you!
(fund-raising campaign in the church she worked as a volunteer, side jobs etc) I think the most important thing is that you actually want it and DO something for it
btw I told you this because she was able to get the money because she worked so hard
I'm going on exchange to Japan for a year! This was so helpful, thanks :)
i miss you😂😂😂 i miss your video😂😂😂 finaly...
I little confused when writing a essay do you write in your first language or the language in place your going?
And what kind of gifts do you bring for the host family?
What is the max age that you can be as a japanese exchange student with AFS?
For high school programs, you have to be below 18 before departure.
Nooo I’m too late I’m gonna be 18 in less than 8 months😭😭😭
I’m planing on being a foreign exchange student to Japan next year and this was so helpful, thank you 💕

what if I have really bad anxiety? would I not be able to go? ;0;
You have to ask your company about that. I think you can still go but it's not recommended for you to do so.
Euodias thank you!
Your school depends entirely on where your host family is. You can't choose as it should be the closest school nearby.
赤羽総悟 Bruh the person's asking about their eligibility in the case of being homeschooled. I also need that answer
I am homeschooled now. I want to exchange. Do I need to go to a legit school in order to exchange?
Jimin flavored jams
I just misunderstood, I apologise, but with that attitude, I don't think anyone will like you in Japan. I just made a mistake...
EDIT:
Hold on, I didn't misunderstand, she/he said would they either transfer to a public or private school since they're homeschooled.

I KEEP WATCHING YOU AT DIFFERENT ACCS TO SUPPORT YOU AND I LOVE IT
i'm not going on exchange...
but i'm learning japanese so this helped me a lot still
I love that youre honest in your videos, its really inspiring, thank you so much for uploading
Hello! You said you need to be healthy, does that just mean physical? or mental too? I have depression so I need to take pills, would that prohibit me from being able to enter?
Both physically and mentally. If you can keep your depression under control (note that some people get more depressed on exchange), then you can try to go on exchange.
What if you have asthma? is it prohibited...
Euodias Oh okay, Thank you so much!
If you can keep your asthma under control, I don't see a problem with it at all. But you'd still have to check with your exchange company about that.
tip for anyone looking into an exchange:
see if your city has any sister cities! i personally got super lucky in that my city has three. each year, each country sends delegates for 2 weeks to visit the other city and learn about their culture. i went on one of the trips, and when I got back, i simply contacted their local exchange office (in japanese) inquiring about whether or not they do long term exchanges. this is a really good option for those of you who don't want to pay thousands of dollars in fees!
I love you so much like please
Thank you! I'm signing up for AFS! and I'm hoping that I'll get accepted!
Did you??
