Good video..... I figured that out in the mid 70's and had nothing but good results ever since. Another detail to pay attention to is dropping the stick right over the lug... it gives a fuller sound that cuts better.
I love adding cross stick in the right style of music and the difference between using the shoulder of the stick and the butt of the stick is night and day. Another great video. 🤘😎🥁
Cool, been playing for decades always good to get clarity. So what I gathered from this video is dominant click sound and less dominate click by switching stick positions and placement of stick on the drum, and hand position. Good video. Keep it up.
As an 'old guy' re-visiting a long time hobby I appreciate the way you dive down into the details. fwiw I also sometimes experiment with placing the tip of the stick nearer or farther from the rim (i.e. changing the length of the 'resonant' part of the stick) to vary the sound.
Very good instructions, super clear. One additional thought of mine: When playing cross-stick you can do ghost notes with your fingertips. Gavin Harrison ist a master of this technique. I am really looking forward for more videos to come. 1000 Abos and more is realistic, go for it, and as always: Greetings from Germany.
Truth! I hate when it’s a fresh pair of sticks and I play a bunch of cross sticks and only one stick is dented up. Takes a bit for them to even out. But I look at it like tires on a car. You’re going to replace the tires eventually, anyway. Might as well drive.
My first drum teacher showed me this back in the day but I've been trying to find work arounds since then haha. I don't like flipping my sticks around and I find there's actually a sweet spot if you play deep enough into the stick that gets a little louder "click" sound than the butt end. Fully willing to admit i just bought a gruv x-stick a week ago though 😂
Those are both good solutions. I'm not sure if you can still get one (Reverb, maybe?), but I used to have a Russ Miller Groove Wedge that really did the trick. Sounded great either way.
My first cross-sticking attempt was actually using the area near the bead of the stick as I had no idea how it was done. This was while playing a song on stage in 1990 to a packed room! I heard it and thought "that's not right" (in terms of sound) but kept doing it through that section of the song; it provided a much higher sounding cross-stick tick than you'd normally hear, but I didn't want to try and correct it while playing. Later on I found out how it is done, and I could employ the butt-end method shown here if I wanted a heftier sound for sure. There's more than one way to cross a stick... no, that's a horrible analogy....

Nice! I’m going to have to pay attention to that. Thanks for stopping by!
i find moving the stick a little bit higher than the center of the snare gives a better tone
Nice! I’ll try it out. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you!

Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you’re back to playing drums!

Vielen dank! Yes! Gavin Harrison is a great example of that. Thank you for stopping by. Tschuss!

Nest video idea, Lesson on snare tunings. Spring tensions, height, ergonomics and all.
I’ll put it on the list. Thanks for stopping by!
Sounds great. I just don’t like denting the grip area of my stick.

It sounds like you've got excellent musical instincts. Thanks for stopping by!
Not a fan of that sound. My cross stick is about 4-5 inches from the tear drop top.
Nice. Yeah, like I said, these sounds are so subjective. If you’re getting a great sound, keep doing it! Thank you for stopping by.
Intersting , Meinl sticks r gr8 , i bought about 8 different models , 😊
I admit I was skeptical when they first came out, but they’ve become my go-to, especially for jazz.
