I have a chicken named Vhagar She is bronze with dark iridescent feathers that shine blue, green, and purple. She can destroy a whole lettuce plant in minutes.🐔
Vhagar and Caraxes did all that fighting and traveling together, only to slaughter each other over Harrenhal years later. I wonder can dragons form legit bonds with each other. Or are they just extensions of their rider at the time.
I always thought that was the saddest part of the Gods Eye dragon fight

The saddest part was the fact that Vhagar killed her former rider's wife and true love's dragon: Meleys. And that Daemon killed his father and late wife's dragon
My theory is that they do form bonds with each other, but their strongest bond is with their rider, to the point where their rider’s will can override their own after a certain point.
They can form bonds with eachother as shown with Vermithor and Silverwing. Jahaerys and Alisanne were in love, and their dragons also became extremely close and stayed close after their riders deaths. After Vermithor died, Silverwing arrived at the scene riderless and tried to nudge Vermithor awake and tried to help him fly. When she realised that Vermithor wouldn't wake up, she flew off into the Reach alone and (as far as we know) never took another rider.
I think it's so sad that Vhagar and Caraxes were once ridden by brothers (Baelon and Aemon) who loved each other and then by wife and husband (Laena and Daemon) who loved each other, only to kill each other...its sad too, that Daemon was fighting his father's dragon and his wife's old dragon!

The sad part is that she was probably the mother/grandmother of all other dragons but she had to kill them one by one.
I doubt she was an egg layer, she was a vicious killer, not a mother. Her choices of riders are a testament to that.
It would be a travesty if we never get to see Balerion in the flesh. Im dying for a flashback with him. Ever since his skull was shown in Game of Thrones the idea of his true size and how he looked fascinated me.

Vhagar and meraxes were most likely layed as eggs by one of the other 4 dragons that came to dragonstone with the targaryens
I'd really like to know more about why 4 dragons died off in that 100 years and only 2 new ones were hatched. Seems weird.

@@DavidLightbringer Depends on how old the Cannibal is. He was known as a killer of hatchlings and generally a dick. I wonder if the Targaryens ever tried to take him out for raiding their "livestock."
@@DavidLightbringer Probably had to do with the diminishing power since the Doom. The red comet and sacrificing the Maegi and Drogo, only death can pay for life. These factors aligned to bring the 3 hatchlings alive out of stone. The Century of Blood probably has something to do with it. We know the Dornish could kill dragons, they learned it from someone, mostly like Ghiscari descendants. The Rhoynar could kill dragons. Gaemon, Aelyx, Aegon (Gaemon's son), Aerion, Baelon, Daemion, Aerys. All of these probably were riders and their sisters/wives. A century of war and 3 dragons remained. With the dance of the dragons 23 dragons get diminished to 4 in 2 years.
Your observation that both sides are having to factor Vhagar into their overall strategies made me suddenly realise George is inspired by an era of history we don't normally associate with ASOIAF: World War 2. There was great debate in the RAF during the Battle Of Britain whether to send fighters out in large groups against german bombers or in packs of two or three (There were plusses and minuses to both approaches). Now I think of it, if a writer seriously sits down to write a dragon war WW2/WW1 is the way to go.

When Leana talked about Vhagar's song being a sad thing. I like to think that she Is singing about her lost companions, it's essentially like losing her brother and sister with Balerion and Meraxes.
Having read Fire and Blood twice already, I still have to say that listening to it read like this with pictures and maps and side notes is the first time I really GRASPED the craziness of them burning every castle and bathing everyone in dragon flame. I love hearing the context as you read of who the person is/nicknames/parents/age all at once. It helps me imagine the whole person and familial connections; not just the name in a story. Awesome video once again duh!
right on, that's exactly what I am going for... a few visual aids and slowing down to really think about what is happening helps a lot. Fire and Blood has too much information to just plow through it, because yeah I felt the same as you on first read.

It’s foreshadowed by Tyrion designing a saddle for Bran in both Game of Thrones and ASOIAF. But Tyrion never designed one for Danny(or Jon eventually) in the show.
It looks kind of silly riding a dragon by holding on to a few small horns or scales.
Especially since we are going to see Dragon on Dragon fights in HotD. I hope they show undoing the chains to leap and stabby stab.

3:19 - One scene I would love to see in "House of the Dragon" (though it's so specific that I doubt it'll ever happen) is the following: Note that this would be the first scene where we actually see any dragons in the entire show. Someone like Rhaenyra goes outside to visit her own dragon, Syrax, petting her on the head and having food (a goat) for her brought over which she burns and rips apart easily. Rhaenyra takes a step back and smiles, admiring the power of her dragon. Someone remarks that she seems to grow larger and more fearsome every day. Rhaenyra simply replies "Yes, she does" as she smiles, clearly well-satisfied. We as the audience are impressed by the size, power and majesty of Syrax. Then we hear a roar.
Suddenly the Targaryen music swells and we see a shadow cover the field, Rhaenyra and Syrax all together. We see a shot looking down on them as Rhaenyra looks up, standing beside her dragon. Then a shot looking up. We see it flying through the clouds. Aemond Targaryen a dot atop the massive Vhagar. They fly around the Red Keep, making the Red Keep seem positively small compared to what we're used to, and then they land in what can only be described as a small earthquake.
We see a shot from beside and behind Rhaenyra, Syrax is also in the shot, and before them Vhagar rears up and roars, making Syrax seem like a small child by comparison. Vhagar calms back down and lets Aemond off. Who now strides towards Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra stares daggers at the pair and the person talking to her looks concerned.
I don't know why, but I would just love this scene. I just want to be blown away by the contrast between Vhagar and the other dragons. And I think it would really help set up what a threat Vhagar will be in the Dance.
Btw, could also be Laena who goes through this, but personally I'd prefer Aemond because that immediately allows the Dance to be set up. That is going off of the assumption though that the first season will mostly take part shortly before the Dance just with copious flashbacks in it. If it truly takes place from before 120 to 129 though (with no flashbacks) then obviously this couldn't be the first scene with dragons and Aemond at the same time. But it being either would still be pretty cool, imo.
well there are a couple of scenes where people who are rivals land their dragons in the same area and the dragons hiss and snap at each other... they def pick up the mood of their rider

Wow, this is great. Makes me think of of The Field of Fire and The Dance with new actors - Tywin (Fire King/Targ) burning up the Riverlands with his “fire demons” Mountain (Balerion the Giant or Vhagar the Destroyer), Lorch (Drogon (baby-killer) or Meraxes (scorpion)), The Black Goat (Balerion (the devil from Essos)), Addam Marbrand (Sunfyre or Seasmoke). He even has Clegane take out the last Lord Darry, which is the first house to get burned by Vhagar in the Dance.

F&B is so heavy handed telling us "although never dragon riders, house Velaryon..." that I actually really question it. The mother of the conquers was a Velaryon. The Seasnake's children rode Dragons, even the bastards not born to his dragon-riding wife. And when the Seasnake died the Cannibal gave him a fly over like a final salute.
It’s a NO TRUE SCOTSMAN proposition. A dragonrider is a Targ. A ship’s captain is a Valaryon.
Well at the least, they have Targ genes from the mother of Valaena, possibly again later on (I forget)
I really liked the idea of the Velaryons being a family of dragon riders who lost control their dragons generations before the Tragaryens followed them west, with Cannibal being the last of the feral descendants of their mounts. However, I have since some to prefer the idea that Cannibal was from a brood of feral Celtigar dragons instead.
A Velaryon Dragon would likely recognize the descendants of Velaena Velaryon or their dragons as kin, while a Celtigar dragon would have no blood ties to them and would always seen them as rivals.
It is frankly suspicious that the Targaryens never agreed to intermarry with the Celtigars despite them being a fellow Valyrian family like the Velaryons. They tried to arrange marriage alliances, but the Targaryens always refused them.
It is stated that the Velaryons were allies of the Targaryens before either family left the capital of the Freehold, but nothing is said of any friendly relations between the Targaryens and the Celtigars. The Celtigars are sworn vassals of Dragonstone before the Conquest, but I like to think their relationship was like that of the Boltons to the Starks, or the Yronwoods to the Martells, or the Freys to the Tullys.
One of Aegon the Conqueror's first acts after landing was to undermine the Celtigar clams to Crackclaw Point, promising they would never need to pay taxes or fealty to a house they considered oppressive but would be sworn directly to the Targaryen king. Celtigars have tried to get Targaryens to marry their daughters, but there is no record of the two families every intermarrying.
It is also worth noting that the Celtigars are the one Valyrian family that is said to possess a magical horn. It is said to summon Krakens, but I suspect it may actually be Dragonbinder or a similar sorcerous horn they used to control their dragon. Perhaps the Targaryens preferred to rely on establish a more intimate personal relationship between dragon and rider, which is harder to establish but in the long run more reliable than using blood magic to bind the beast to their will. The Celtigars may have been more typical of Valyrians, being cruel conquerors, slavers, and blood mages.
@@magister343 I think the relationship is more allong the lines of owner-capatin-crew.
that is, the Targs are the bosses, the Velaryons are the captains of the boats, and the the Celtagars are of the families that reef the sails and pull the oars.

This book was so tragic. The death of all of these beautiful dragons and their complex riders. The history behind each dragon and the life they lived prior to this was heartbreaking. I was sad for like a week over a book it was ridiculous but shows what a great writer Martin is

When Vhagar appears in HOTD, she needs to be seen as a force of death that is utterly unstoppable all the dragons are, vibrant and impressive but Vhagar needs to be superior to them like they bow to her at least before the Dance proper, the audience needs to be in awe and terror of her then you know she is done correctly, I for one cannot wait for Laena Valeryion to conduct a crash landing demonstrating how monsterous Vhagar really is, i.e. the dragon could destroy just about anything with a single hit.

This a lot of info about not only the dragons in HOD but also about the characters in the show. Having read Fire and Blood twice now...am thinking season one is going to be a slow burn with lots of introductions and setting up later subplots. Mainly because even for the most loyal GOT fans...this one is going to be bigger, IMO. I think the opening will set up a short bit with Aegon's conquest and show Balerion...because you almost have to do this for viewers of GOT who weren't paying attention to the Targaryen backstory in that series. But could just be wishful thinking on my part because I would love to see the Fields of Fire scene.
Will you do an Elden Ring Mythology video by an chance? I feel like there is just as much mythology in the game as it is in ASOIAF. Also GRRM worked on the lore and it seem he had a lot of influence. I love your videos and keep up the great work :)

I totally get your pronunciation logic w/ Vagar vs Rhaegar; I would've thought the same way. In fact,when I was a kid I didn't know the word 'naive' wasn't pronounced just as it's spelled, like Nave. I'd only read the word and from its usage understood what it meant but had no idea how it was said aloud lol
