God showed me a few years ago a pic of a large beached whale, dying. Man tries hard to keep this beautiful beast alive by pouring water over it (in other words manmade efforts) when the truth is that the only thing that can save it is a the mighty sea rushing in and lifting it up to carry it out to the depths. It seems bizarre that a PM who says he is an atheist will appoint the Chair of the Nominations Committee. No other Church would do this. I also wonder how the representatives from outside the Church of England will be chosen. For example, will an African bishop from say Nigeria or South Sudan be appointed, folk who said that Justin Welby was no longer their 'primus inter pares'? Will someone like the Archbishop of Sydney, who is orthodox, be appointed? I think Dan is overly optimistic about the possibility of appointing an orthodox bishop. Instead, the Church of England seems headed over a Gadarene cliff edge at pace, with many of its senior leaders being like the Sadducees, knowing neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. This could be achieved by the almost immediate "elevation" of York, who is a safe pair of hands and has already undergone the Church's discernment process to be an Archbishop. He will only serve for three years because of his age, but that's fine. During that time an exhaustive discernment process for York can be carried through and THEN, with the new York in and settled, Cottrell can retire and another discernment process can happen, in great detail this time, for Canterbury. That's how I'd do it, anyway.
Hi, I was present at Martyn Snow's Installation as Bishop of Leicester whilst living within the diocese. His promises made on the day, he has broken, his LLF push grates with Orthodox and Evangelicals and his congregants diminish week by week. My experiences of his predecessor were all favourable, but he has subsequently retired.
Bring God back to the CofE and a revival. No compromise, Bible believing and spirit filled. Jesus is the head of the church, the leadership are there to serve Him only.
Excuse me, Rev Dan, you seem to have left something vital off the list of policy actions for the July 2025 Synod - what is the Church going to do about the sex abuse scandal and the bishops who covered it up. The resignation of the Archbishop is fine, but it would appear that this is not safely satisfied by the sacrificial mea culpa of Justin Welby. While the "buck" stops at the top, this isn't going away. The media who investigated it, for one, will not let this go.
Whoever is appointed to be ABC needs to be a scholarly theologian, first and foremost. Either that, or he/she must have a very scholarly theologian as a close advisor. The new ABC must be able to stand up for Jesus of Nazareth, and acclaim him Messiah. Our problem is the existing bishops. Who, among them, is courageous and 'saintly': let alone well-read in theology? They all appear to be like the CEO of Boots! They are all ambitious hierarchical "career-clerics". Perhaps it is the time to pull an Academic out from a university: or a particularly good 'pastor' from a Northern parish (not London!).. It would be good if the people of Canterbury diocese also had an 'acclamatory' role to play: perhaps via a vote.

I attend a very good Anglo-Catholic parish in Ottawa, Ontario, with an extremely sound clergy, a wonderful liturgy and complimenting choir, and strong gospel of the day homilies. But I will be checking out the Anglican Ordinariate they also have in Ottawa this Sunday after attending my parish of St. Barnabas. I have a decision to make....and the current state of affairs in Canterbury should make it a no-brainer.

I vote for someone who finally acknowledges that the burden of proof is with the religious, then commissions scientific research to explore existence of deitys with logical, validated and therefore testable evidence. As an Orthodox priest I am interested in your use of the term orthodox to describe positions in the C of E. To be Orthodox is to be in communion with the Church founded on the first Easter Day and passed through the Apostles since then. It is a blessed and joyful place to be - I would be nowhere else.
By definition your usage of the term “orthodox” condemns all others to being not “orthodox”. A more fitting term would be “traditional” or “conservative.”.

The current Dean of St Paul's, Andrew Tremlett, would, in my opinion, be a safer and more capable candidate than any of the bishops. There have been two Deans of St Paul's appointed ABC in the (distant) past, so it would not be without precedent.
The archbishop is appointed by the British monarch on the advice of the prime minister of the United Kingdom-however in practice candidates are chosen by the Crown Nominations Commission, a Church of England body. I also wonder how the representatives from outside the Church of England will be chosen. For example, will an African bishop from say Nigeria or South Sudan be appointed, folk who said that Justin Welby was no longer their 'primus inter pares'? Will someone like the Archbishop of Sydney, who is orthodox, be appointed?
I think Dan is overly optimistic about the possibility of appointing an orthodox bishop. Instead, the Church of England seems headed over a Gadarene cliff edge at pace, with many of its senior leaders being like the Sadducees, knowing neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. Those of us who have remained in the C of E, on the basis that this is the place where the unbelievers turn at moments of personal or national crisis (like the death of the Queen) must consider whether we can do more good outside an apostate C of E than inside it

Important in the current crisis is to avoid a power vacuum and act quickly. This could be achieved by the almost immediate "elevation" of York, who is a safe pair of hands and has already undergone the Church's discernment process to be an Archbishop. He will only serve for three years because of his age, but that's fine. During that time an exhaustive discernment process for York can be carried through and THEN, with the new York in and settled, Cottrell can retire and another discernment process can happen, in great detail this time, for Canterbury. That's how I'd do it, anyway.

His promises made on the day, he has broken, his LLF push grates with Orthodox and Evangelicals and his congregants diminish week by week. My experiences of his predecessor were all favourable, but he has subsequently retired.
For a change, they should appoint a Christian who believes in Jesus Christ. Is that too much to ask?

Excuse me, Rev Dan, you seem to have left something vital off the list of policy actions for the July 2025 Synod - what is the Church going to do about the sex abuse scandal and the bishops who covered it up. The resignation of the Archbishop is fine, but it would appear that this is not safely satisfied by the sacrificial mea culpa of Justin Welby. While the "buck" stops at the top, this isn't going away. The media who investigated it, for one, will not let this go.

Whoever is appointed to be ABC needs to be a scholarly theologian, first and foremost. Either that, or he/she must have a very scholarly theologian as a close advisor. The new ABC must be able to stand up for Jesus of Nazareth, and acclaim him Messiah. Our problem is the existing bishops. Who, among them, is courageous and 'saintly': let alone well-read in theology? They all appear to be like the CEO of Boots! They are all ambitious hierarchical "career-clerics". Perhaps it is the time to pull an Academic out from a university: or a particularly good 'pastor' from a Northern parish (not London!).. It would be good if the people of Canterbury diocese also had an 'acclamatory' role to play: perhaps via a vote.

I attend a very good Anglo-Catholic parish in Ottawa, Ontario, with an extremely sound clergy, a wonderful liturgy and complimenting choir, and strong gospel of the day homilies. But I will be checking out the Anglican Ordinariate they also have in Ottawa this Sunday after attending my parish of St. Barnabas. I have a decision to make....and the current state of affairs in Canterbury should make it a no-brainer.

I vote for someone who finally acknowledges that the burden of proof is with the religious, then commissions scientific research to explore existence of deitys with logical, validated and therefore testable evidence. If a deity is discovered, be it Jahweh, Odin, Loki, Zeus, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Ra, Horus, Inti etc., humans must then be free to decide if the contract on offer is acceptable. In closing, if Jahweh proves to be scientifically in existence, I would have some very serious questions for it!!

As an Orthodox priest I am interested in your use of the term orthodox to describe positions in the C of E.
To be Orthodox is to be in communion with the Church founded on the first Easter Day and passed through the Apostles since then.
It is a blessed and joyful place to be - I would be nowhere else.
By definition your usage of the term “orthodox” condemns all others to being not “orthodox”. A more fitting term would be “traditional” or “conservative.”.

According to Holy Scripture, you can rule out 5 of them straight away but the CofE abandoned accepting the Bible as the Inspired, Inerrant, Infallible word of God a long time ago.

Not Cotterell. Both Welby and he sent a coercive letter to + Newcastle to lift the suspension on Sentamu for his part in covering up the abuse Matthew Inson by a priest. + Newcastle refused and blew the whistle on Welby.
The current Dean of St Paul's, Andrew Tremlett, would, in my opinion, be a safer and more capable candidate than any of the bishops. There have been two Deans of St Paul's appointed ABC in the (distant) past, so it would not be without precedent.
