Not likely 2024. Its doing too well. I heard some of the professional FX models will get a refresh however, so maybe that will trickle down to the FX3 next year perhaps. But what do any of us know LOL
The benefit of using an A7S3 was that when I was doing a hybrid shoot and found a good frame, I could snap a photo before recording without any hassle. Being able to send high-resolution stills with identical framing is a great touch for the clients. But if I were to pick a permanent set-up, the FX3 all the way.
Right there with you. Have had my fx3 for a few years too. My asks for a new one are simple:). 6k, open gate, 32 bit float audio, better ibis, and dare I say... Improved color science. oh and the menu. lol
This camera absolutely rocks!!! Bought mine 2 years ago for travel vlogs and as you said, it’s perfect to catch ‘those moments’. The footage is insanely good, even when I mess up, a great image can be found in color grading. Feels good in the hands and intuitive to use. Case in point, went from a camcorder to the FX3, I feel Sonys design, both through the user menus and the camera itself made the transition much easier. Of course , there was the university of UA-cam to fill in knowledge gaps. Agree with some of your upgrade suggestions, but will probably hang onto my FX3 for a good while.
Still a dream cam for many. Actually upgraded/downgraded/swapped in (however you want to see this) my Sony A7Siii for the ZV-E1 for more vlog style content and light weight carry and then also got the A7Cii for photography but also as a second body for video, though I would stilll like to maybe pick the FX3 up one day as a main dedicated Video camera, maybe if the new one comes out I'll get that or grab this if the price comes down.
bought mine 2 months ago for an amazing price of 3700 euro which is like 1k less than usual here in europe. obviously im a little scared about the newer versions and all the quircks its gonna have but honestly it has all i need (for now). i made enough excuses in my life to buy gear i really didnt need. the fx3 now will be my cam for atleast the next 3 years i hope
Yup. It’s fire forsure. I can’t even think what a mark 2 will look like. Since already the fx3 comes so close to the Burano. There’s no way a mark 2 could be better than the Burano so what can Sony even do with a mark 2 fx3. Give us built in nds and maybe no crop 120? Maybe triple base iso if that’s even possible lol.
Personally I think adding built-in ND's to this camera would change the form factor too much and would sacrifice something like ibis, which is one of the biggest selling points for me. Sony already has a camera with ibis and built-in ND's... The Burano, which is partially why that camera is huge. You need all of that room in order to have both of those systems. Or just look at the Canon C70. It has built-in ND's with no ibis and terrible/ unusable digital IS and is a lot bigger of a camera than the fx3. I would love to see it and welcome it, but not at the risk of making a bigger camera. Here's my wishlist: The better screen design and resolution from the A7rV. A 6K sensor and a global shutter. An option to record open gate and internal raw, or raw lite, via the Type A cards. Scopes (not just zebras) for monitoring including; false color, or EL-Zone internally. Triple base ISO, like the new Canon C400. All of the new Sony AI Autofocus features and advancements. An MI shoe removable EVF. An option to record externally to an SSD via the USB ports, like what Blackmagic and now the C400 does. Shutter Angle! This absolutely needs to be included right out of the box on launch. We should not have had to wait all these years to get that feature when others make it standard (and technically still waiting for at this point). Indie filmmakers have always embraced the smaller form factor camera for their work, but now that Hollywood is starting to see the benefits (The Creator), I think we are closer than ever to finally getting an updated fx3... Which is why we are finally getting Shutter Angle. This is in part due to (basically) the overnight popularity of this camera after The Creator was released. Everyone wanted to know more about it and why they went with the fx3 That film is what peaked my interest in purchasing one. Really getting to see what's possible in the real world, not just for a UA-cam production, but a fully realized professional feature film with proper funding and studio backing... I truly believe we are going to be seeing a lot more from the fx3 and it has a long life a head of it thanks to The Creator.
The sony a7s iii and the fx3 are going to be spoken of in the same terms as the canon 5D mark ii. With regards to how revolutionary and impactful they were to the industry when they were introduced. I wish Sony bypassed the a7s iii amd just made the fx3, because i had no need for the hybrid aspect of the a7s iii. I just shoot videos with it. But with that aside, if you are better off buying a new version of a camera because the used version is only $200 cheaper, you know the market still regards the camera highly.
The first Sony I bought was the A1 (last year as I switched from the Nikon to Sony ecosystem) but that sucker would overheat in 20 minutes in a cool studio 🤬 so I bought the camera either the fan and haven’t had a problem since! Looking buy one more FX3 and relegate the A1 to coverage and stills (esp multipixels) and don’t need anything else for my studio shooting! I keep the audio XLR plugged in with a Sony mic (even though my audio recording is off camera using boom, lavs plugged into a Zoom F8n) for quality scratch sound… and it really gives me a good “atmosphere” audio track to keep the room sound honest. And, yeah, I got it fully rigged up with V-Mount, Ninja and Matte box to sit on my Sachtler or RS2 gimbal or Rhino… full array of GM lenses and I’m “happy as a pig in mud!”
Thanks for the nice video. Fully agree, both the FX3 and FX30 are (still) great cameras. The only groundbreaking development they could really do, is combine a stabilized sensor with their auto-ND filter. That would be awesome! The FX4 and FX40? In that sense I quite like the new Z200 and NX800 camcorders Sony just released, which for the first time bring the auto-ND to cameras of USD 4000 and USD 3300 respectively. Though their sensors are 1", it shows that it would be possible to offer this in a USD 4500 - 5000 full-frame camera.
Ohhh there is a new FX3 camera for sure…..a few of these FX3 long term reviews videos showing up recently. A perfect time for a mk2. Fingers crossed a new A7Siii mk2 as I need the price to come down on the current one. Great video and collective fingers crossed! Cheers
@Chris Brockhurst Referring to 10:44 I'm almost 100% sure the low base native ISO of the FX3 is not 640 but 800. I even just fact checked it with my colleague and googled it. So.. if you had this for years and been using it at 640 low base ISO... Edit: The 640 low base ISO is only for the A7SIII not FX3. I truly hope you havent been doing that all these years
Fx3 is still my goal, just have been waiting for the updated version to come so prices drop. Had a few opportunities, but just gotta wait for planets and dollars to align.
@@chrisbrockhurst I'd like the fx3ii to body to be a tad more boxy with a bigger screen and much brighter... 4k up 120 downsampled off a 6k sensor... off a dual stacked sensor to minimize rolling shutter . open gate up to 60fps ... latest greatest Sony AI auto focus. Better ibis , triple base ISO with the ability to turn off noise Reduction in camera... false color , wave forms and shutter angle ....and last but not least some type of internal raw ..
Any body fell victim to Sony and bought the A7SIII without knowing the fx3 coming out? When the A6300 was released, months later they released the A6500. I'd buy the FX3 again. Don't be in a rush to buy the latest and greatest. I remember seeing people sell their A7SIII for the FX3.
Dope video as always Chris, quick question though, have you updated to the new firmware? Coz apparently it’s really bad and caused a lot of issues for a lot FX3 and a7siii owners, especially with overheating, Bluetooth and wifi issues, internal sound issues, autofocus glitching. It’s just crazy, coz I love my sony a7siii and fx3 but haven’t updated yet coz of these issues I see guys having after updates.
Hey Chris, great content. I find cine ei, especially when to lower the ei and having a preview on the monitor that is not the same as the recorded footage very confusing. You said you use flexible quite a lot and was curious when you use each?
honestly its purely a personal preference thing, if you find one works better for you than the other don't be fooled into thinking you have to do it the other way because everyone else says thats the 'right' way

Internal ND's will always be worth the drawbacks of the FX6 in choosing it over the FX3. No internal NDs? Not a cinema camera: despite what their marketing team tells you. Period.
Common question but it will be good to know your point, I do photo and video and need to update from a73 so I want to buy new gear should I ZV-E1 and A74 or better to but only fx3?
Probably. I remember last year, every UA-camr was raving about the Leica Q2. Every budding photographer then goes and buys the Q2, only for Leica to release the Q3 about 2 months later. 😄
