- This Toyota landcruiser fj80 (actually Lexus lx450 ) is really shaping up. I go over a few last minute items on the roll cage and rock sliders before handing it back off to Dirt Lifestyle Nate.
He has a laundry list of work to do and before you know it we will be in the dirt on the OnX Offroad build challenge. Link below to vote and follow along.

I had back surgery 3 weeks ago and Dirt every day kept me in a good mood. Over 150 episodes and laughed the whole time. Thanks
Oh man. Hope you heal quickly
Hope you’ll be okay again soon
Man I love this stuff! The reason I found your channel was because I had been fantasizing about pulling my front bumper on my S=10 and make something simple. That was before I got real sick and couldn't do much of anything. My clutch master went out and I couldn't even make that happen so I sold the truck to my cousin for junk price. It needed a lot to be fair and I haven't been able to work for some time. But living it vicariously and finding cool solutions is still fascinating, so thanks Dave! Dang that mustang looks nice sitting there. You should get a sponsor for some of those car lifts that let you store cars under cars. lol. Thanks for the edutainment. Your camera work is great. You don't need no camera man. What you need is a floating camera that could just stick where you put it.
Like a drone.
@@thedirtheadshed You use a gopro right? Have to get as small as possible because you are under stuff all the time. But then again like if you could have some of those articulating arms but you want to keep it simple right? Hard to balance for sure!
@@thedirtheadshed You ever seen adam savages youtube channel where he makes the ultimate camera mount? Pretty sure it is with a gopro and that articulating arms (2nd comment sorry)
Awesome to see nate came and picked it up look forward to seeing what nates has in store for it next
He hustled the last few weeks
@@thedirtheadshed oh I bet
I love how you make stuff look so bloody easy. Having watched you for years doing what you do, just reiterates just how dam good you are at what you do. And love the colab with Nat.
Thank you. I’m feeling a little out of practice at the moment though
Hey Dave, Thanks for the great videos, when i do a cage, I put in a harness bar and take out the stock seat belts so the owner has to use harnesses, It is to easy to smack your head on a cage with stock seat belts. Cheers
Yeah. They have some downfalls for sure
This is, far and away, my favorite build, on so many levels. I’m not an avid follower of the series, but to show what can be accomplished with excellent existing engineering (Toyota) and thoughtful craftsmanship on the back end is a no brainer to me. And to make it look really nice is gravy, albeit really nice, savory gravy. Killing it, guys.
Thank you. It’s nice not reinventing the whole rig
It came along nicely 👍👍
Thanks . It’s getting closer!
Awesome work man. When you know…you know. 💪
Thank you
I started using MRO when I found out that is what Ujoint Offroad used on some work they did to my van. It's good stuff! The cans last forever too.
Yeah. It’s good stuff
The little things add up and take just as much time, thanks for taking us along while finishing the cage. Well done Sir
Thank you for watching
You are an artist with that welder!!! Great job on that cage and all the stuff that people will never see…awesome!!!
Thanks! That’s sort of my role. Always has been
I vote for you And Nate everyday I'm rooting for you guys Killing it on this gorgeous Toyota Build
Much appreciated
@@thedirtheadshed very welcome brother keep up the amazing work
Can't wait to get my Arb dual compressor And tank Setup and My M.O.R.E. bracket and all the accessories as well as my Front and Rear Arb air lockers to show up compressor and goodies should be here today for my 4th gen V8 4runner
I like all those things. The twin air is awesome
@@thedirtheadshed I'm excited I have arb setups on a few rigs love them
My 11 yr old daughter very affectionately and lovingly said, 'That man needs a cameraman.' She loves the content as do I. Can't wait to see all y'all's rigs in action!! I really dig the Toyota y'all are working on.
The episodes are so much better when Cameron is involved
Dude, I just love how authentic your videos are. Keep doing what you are doing
Thank you. I’m enjoying making them
Everytime I watch you and Nate working on that 80 I want to go work on mine. Really excited to see how it ends up. Thanks for joining Nate on this challenge.
Nice!! Get out there! Weekend is almost over
This thing reminds me of when the Cal Trans trucks were the same color.
Totally does
Enjoyed the fit up. Words and numbers , the downfall of society. 🤓. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for not getting bored! I never know if people are gonna dig that stuff
Awsome work both you guys
Thank you
That thing is sweet!
Thanks
Very motivating Dave, its fun to watch you work/get around road blocks within fabrication. Many thanks for sharing. Cheers!!!
Thanks. It’s all about solving problems along the way
I took the ‘winch’ off of my spare tire carrier and flipped it over to mount an air tank. Worked perfectly!
Nice
Handled your parts of the build like a pro! I too am looking forward to seeing what Nate has in store next for this reimagined LX!
Thank you. Wish I would have been able to do more
You should do a cruising video in the pinto!!! Just like you did on Highland Ave. when you lived in SD
I only cruised highland once . It was wild. And super illegal at the time. Basically
just trying not to get rolled all night
Been watching all 3 teams, this is by far the cleanest and sharp looking build. Been voting for BJ, but I had to vote for you guys the past couple of days because the craftmenship that you and Nate been laying out.
Much appreciated! I’m secretly voting for Colt
1:59 Turned on CC to see what YT thinks you said, "potatoes are awesome." Hahah! I agree! Potatoes are awesome!
That’s funny.
Comming out so well, thumbs up for the bouth of u
Thank you. It’s crunch time now
@@thedirtheadshed yes and hope you’ll do great, ill keep on at the scale one in the meantime ;-)
Gott damm that might be the cleanest sounding sizzle I’ve heard from a mig in a minute on the tube.
This one was rough. It was DIALED IN last week
This is great. You did such a clean job so quickly.
Thank you
Dave, you and Nate are a couple of my favorite fabricators and wheelers. Not sure why you guys are behind in the votes but its no big. I'll keep on watchin you videos if you keep on makin em. Nice job!
Thanks! I appreciate it
This is a really cool build, you and Nate are killing it!
And noticed you're a fellow lefty...
Thank you ! It’s turning out pretty good. Should be a good rig for a long while
Great job! Can’t wait to see you guys on the trail. Also, it would be cool to se some DRZ content. I still have my 2000 DRZS.
Nice. Definitely will have some moto episodes on here
I love your thought process on fabrication...I've learned a lot from your logic! Thanks for sharing your years of experience!!! Honestly I don't feel like Nate expressed enough gratitude for what you did...but that's just based on my limited perspective from watching this video.
Thanks for the support!
Thanks for sharing that was fun
Thanks for watching
All the stoke!!!! Still voting for y’all daily 🥲
Thanks so much
Dream team putting together a nice piece! Looking to be very capable. Love Dirt. Thanks
Thank you. With low enough gearing and lockers it should be nearly unstoppable.
2 of the three people I blame for me buying an offroad truck (normally a go fast guy) in one video!
Sorry… not sorry
Your a serious fabricator and 4x4 dude. But so cool you have dropped and bagged street rides. Great stuff
Thanks. I was building stuff on the ground way before i built for the rocks
You'll get this youtube thing. Don't sweat the little stuff. Genuine people attract an audience. That's you through and through
Looking good. I like how tight the cage turned out
Thanks Mark
"needs more pry bar".... "got it" 🤣🤣
Bout got whacked
@@thedirtheadshed "needs more prybar" would be a great shirt slogan for merch
Words are always hard when the camera turns on I swear 😂😂
Totally
Yes!! Thanks Dave!
Thanks for watching
DUDE!!!! Was that a 70's Mustang II, in the shop???
You know, they fit great, on a Bronco or Blazer chassis!!!😮😮😮
Yes it is. I have done some videos on it
Go Dave Go!
Going!
Dang, guys, that beast looks awesome. Great progress on the machine.
Thanks! The deadline is coming up quickly
@thedirtheadshed yes, like 5 weeks, I heard.
Great job on this thing! Looking forward to seeing how it performs.
Me too, thanks
Cool channel.thanks from Coquitlam,B.C., Canada.
Cheers. Thanks for watching
Taking a break from my modular bumper build to watch the dirt head shed, my wife thinks I'm crazy because I built a 1/8 scale model .
now I'm building it full size out of 26 ga sheet metal for test fit, and tweaks then I'm going 3/16" plate for the final product.
I may do the side wings out of
1/8 "plate to save a lil weight. The build is looking great I can't wait to see yall back in moab testing the final results.
Sounds like a pretty in depth project
@@thedirtheadshed it's my first modular style bumper I've built several tube bumpers on the fly but with the price of a sheet of plate I'm not taking chances.
That cage fits so nice! Swanky work man
Thanks!
Nice work, but one thing keeps popping up in my mind. How will the ride be, now that you have welded the chassis and the body together?
It’ll be fine. Probably just notice a little more engine vibration
So good. I love the realness of your videos. Just bought a multimatic 220, love it so far, whats your large machine if this is the small one?
I’ve got a miller 252 as well.
Great video! Did you ever find a new motor for that YJ in the background?
I did. Now I just have to execute the plan
What is your estimate for the cost of the cage and sliders? Just curious as i am looking to start a build project in a 93 LC. Truly an awesome job! The little details are what make your work stand out. Really enjoy watching you work, although you make it look TOO EASY!!!!
I think he was in the material about $350
I think y'all are a better team than when Fred was the host. I'm glad y'all teamed up for this bild
Thanks. Looking forward to testing out the rig
Love this build.
Thanks. It’s got me wanting another landcruiser
When you tie a cage to the frame is there anything you need or should do to the body mounts? Should they be replaced with a solid spacer or are there still some benefits in reducing vibrations with leaving them in? I know time is a factor for you, just curious if that is something to think about if I was to build a similar cage. Keep up the good work.
Typically I make solid body mounts when I do a cage like this
Out of curiosity, why didn't you plate the frame where the rock sliders and cage tie into it? Would it just be overkill or maybe personal preference? Would a gusset be a better option?
All are good options. I could have plated with 3/16
Love y’all’s content, keep it up!
Thanks! I’ll
Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
I thought you had a cold saw? I must be mixing your shop with Fin’s.
Nope. That would be nice though
I love/hate these build series, I just want to see y'all put them to use. From a practicality standpoint I think it will be tight between y'all and the Radcharger
Gotta build them to use them. Might as well film it
@@thedirtheadshed I know, it's the whole anticipation thing
I spy a YJ with a very blown motor!
It’s So broken
@@thedirtheadshed I've done the same exact thing, only with a passenger car. I turned the car into a submarine, and there wasn't a single connecting rod in the 4.6 liter engine that wasn't twisted into a pretzel.
Look at the big brain on Dave 👌
Not me
5:32 oof he didnt take the tailgate off to paint it eh, hahaha.
I guess not
Fuck yes, David
🤘🤘
With the roll cage welded to the body and then to the frame, how will that affect the body mounts?
In a perfect world it should either have solid body mounts, or rubber mounted cage
Lookin damn good
Thank you
It looks to me that when you tie that in your flex separation between body and frame are gone. I have never done this so I am curious.
Typically I would do solid body mounts before doing the cage tied in this rigid
Do you think there will be any issues with the cage being welded to the frame and the body while the body is still connected to the frame with the stock body mounts? The body is now connected directly to the frame only through the connections you made.
In a perfect situation I would use urethane bushings to mount the cage with. Hopefully this works out for a while
I have fought dumb cross members I hate m that 1 came out so easy but I thought it was gonna be a pain in the ass what a surprise😂
Jumped right out of there
Yup.
👍 yep
Man you can throw a bead. Damn nice work. Upside down in your face. I’d have to tip the truck on its side.
Thank you!
Maybe fab a pair of safety glasses?
I’ve got plenty, where did I put them?
Dave when is video where you and Dereck from VVG collaborated on a project ??
Keep an eye out for a couple
Of episodes of Roadworthy rescues I helped on
Oh man he didn’t paint the rear hatch with the doors open… sad day. When the hatch is open it’s very noticeable
Gotta get it done!
WOW...DONT WEAR HEADPHONES LOL The sound caught me off guard..thought you would skip past that like most do, but alright.
Which part?
@@thedirtheadshed at 1:50. The loud air rachet sounds. Cant you lower the volume in the edit like you have done for when you are grinding or speed through that part or or just not have ten seconds of removing a nut screaming in our ears? Thats not the enjoyable part for most viewers eardrums, ill put $5 on it. Regardless great channel. It just caught me off guard and i ripped out my headphones lol
It’s not camera shakes. It’s called action sequences.
Yeah.!… I meant to do that
…. Truck Gang !
Holding it down
When are you going to meet up with Fred ? That video will break the internet.
I hung out with him at overland expo. We need to do a bunch of videos together
This competition is like choosing a best friend. I honestly want you all to win, so I have just been voting for Dumpster Fire in hopes of y'all catching up.
We appreciate it
🤘🏻😎👍🏻
Cheers
You took the CAT out.....? Lol
I didn’t….
I'll go rhythm
Thanks
For the algorithm!
I appreciate it
What's up with the mustang 2?
It’s awesome. I need to get the front end back together and drove it next week
Nice👍can't wait for the new content 👌
🦅🇺🇸💪🤠👍
Have a great weekend
Why not using the lift
I couldn’t use it for the sliders, and this was all the next day. . Didn’t want to move everything around
How do I vote?
Go to onX maps.com and head to the off road paged
Why the heck are you using a pneumatic ratchet? Loud, slow and cumbersome with an airline. Just get a 3/8 impact with a swivel
What, do you think I’m made of money??
If $100 impact from harbor freight is a money issue you’re in the wrong line of work. Tools are an investment. If my boss saw me using a pneumatic ratchet he’d throw it across the shop. And he has one in his tool box…covered in dust. My 2 most used tools are my 3/8 and 1/2” milwaukee impacts
How do i get a dirthead sticker?
Stick around. Once the dust settles from UA I will get my store sorted out
@@thedirtheadshed thank you!! I'll keep watching and waiting.
This a repost?
No, it’s new
Who uses primer? Use tremclad.
I’m an artist
...."it's crazy, I can see everything with these glasses on.."...weird.
They are magical
Air ratchet is the most irritating sound ever. Who agrees?
👋
1st.. Time I noticed your A Lefty...
Does Fred know..your not Right...
Lol..
Jk..
Oh he knows. I was always having to find the right seat when we would all go out to eat
I love this build. Great looking rig.
Thank you
Of all the fancy tools you have I was not expecting to see ALL the Hercules power tools.... way to let the broke asses know they don't need them fancy milwaukeeny tools
They definitely stepped up their game at Harbor Freight
