Ranitidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease and for the relief and prevention of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.
MODE OF ACTION
Ranitidine causes competitive inhibition of histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells, which inhibits gastric acid secretion, gastric volume, and hydrogen ion concentration. It does not affect pepsin secretion, pentagastrin- stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin.
