Not with I love yous, but with what would we be if? If this show was supposed to be about a friendship, this question would have nothing to do here, Saint would have said, "If this had not happened we will still be friends", or "you would still love me" if you want to keep it a subtext. But this line is not subtext, it clearly says that the relationship they had was evolving, right? That it would have "become" something else, something romantic probably considering the longing and love confession that we have already gotten at this point. There is so much riding on the phrasing that I truly hope this translation is the most accurate possible because there is a huge difference between "If I had not done what I done would we still be friends?" or "If I had not done what I done, what would we be right now?", It opens the door to a whole alternate universe where their relationship had not been stunted and would have evolved naturally and there is so much remorse in Saint and so much longing for what could have been that I don't think I am reading too much into this. It's not because they don't kiss that it's not a BL. In the same breath I can say, this could totally be about two close friends. Friends love each other, it can be platonic, but friends can be absolute soulmates and friendships can be as tight as romaces, sometimes their ends are even more bitter and painful! It could be a platonic friendship. Except with this line:
"Have you ever thought about it? If that day had not happened, if I hadn't done all that messed up stuff to you, what would things be like between us?".
This passage holds everything, the profound remorse and this tangible regretfulness becomes incarnate in this unphrased wishful thinking. That's where this show is taking a turn into romance for me. Not with I love yous, but with what would we be if?
If this show was supposed to be about a friendship, this question would have nothing to do here, Saint would have said, "If this had not happened we will still be friends", or "you would still love me" if you want to keep it a subtext. But this line is not subtext, it clearly says that the relationship they had was evolving, right? That it would have "become" something else, something romantic probably considering the longing and love confession that we have already gotten at this point.
There is so much riding on the phrasing that I truly hope this translation is the most accurate possible because there is a huge difference between "If I had not done what I done would we still be friends?" or "If I had not done what I done, what would we be right now?", It opens the door to a whole alternate universe where their relationship had not been stunted and would have evolved naturally and there is so much remorse in Saint and so much longing for what could have been that I don't think I am reading too much into this. Of course Saint untrigger the question right after, but the first question that comes out of his mouth is for me the quintessentiel one
