- On this episode of the audionerds podcast the guys talk about the debate of using your eyes vs your ears to mix. Is their a healthy balance to using analyzers and your ears? Can an audio anaylyzer cause you to make bad decisions? Are plugins with no RTA the best for forcing you to use your ears? What plugins have the best RTAs'? Lets find out

Appreciate you Devvon 🙏🏼🙏🏼 thank you for the shoutout!
Ableton 12 is our sauce! Thanks for the shoutout ❤
Ableton is love, Ableton is life
Studio one is the Game changer
"Was Beethoven like Airpods Noise Cancelling deaf or was he deaf deaf?" - L Jean bro I'm rolling rn but he was speaking the truth 🤣🤣🤣
LET ME COOK
@@LJean1 Yeah, that line made me lose it too!! LOL!!!
Fr😂
I think when people say be careful of analyzers, you can scare yourself if you're boosting or cutting too much. Or something along those lines. Because if it sounds good, it is good. Personally, I like to use analyzers because it just feels better to see what I'm doing, it's a comfort thing. It reminds me of visually looking at a GPS when I'm driving.
I like to use analyzers when I hear a problem, it helps me pinpoint more accurately and faster. If it sounds good and the analyzers say otherwise, I'm not changing anything before i listen on different speakers. If it sounds good it is good indeed
5:50 In Ableton: make an audio effect rack and run one chain dry, one chain with an 1176, and one with an LA-2A. Make sure that the compressors are pushing at least 5db gain reduction and blend to taste
Ableton goated for customisation but lose on latency 🥲
Kirchhoff EQ packed up pro Q 3 for me (functionally and looks). You can literally customize the GUI of it which is dope.
11:34 not the FL startup sound 😂😂
I checked if pressed it on accident 😂
11:06 the rosetta stone??? let him cook 😂🔥
SUED IMMEDIATELY LMAO
So close to EP 100 im truly proud to say Ive watched every single one with love and anticipation ❤
im not gon' lie this the best pod ive discovered on YT
For the combo compressor idea, check out Voca from Sonnox. It’s basically, vocal rider, 1176 & LA2A style compression that is blended by an XY pad, 2 forms of saturation blended via XY pad & de-esser all in 1 and with only 3 controls.
Keep in mind that most trained musicians can hear sounds internally without having actual hearing. Also looking at sheet music allows you to hear what it sounds like before playing it.
Also whether using eyes or ears to help in mixing, remember that the music will also be consumed by ears (audio) and eyes (if videos are released)
Overall love the podcast y’all! Keep going!
Mixing music with your eyes is honestly a cheat code people don't take enough time to appreciate. Here's a list of S tier musician who have synesthesia and can see sounds. bruce swedien (mj's enigineer) and quincy jones both have synesthesia and made thriller amazing. Pharrell and Kanye both have it and look how influential they are in modern music. Making music with your eyes is just another way to gather more information to make the right decision. Engineers who feel disrespected by saying "you mix with your eyes" have an ego problem.
bru i love courtney😂 hes so funny, yall the best, greatest podcast of all time🤘🏼
6:45 Pro-Q3, Spectre, Soothe2 and Gullfoss into one plugin would be insane
this is basically bloom and its just okay LOL
In studio one you can combine all kinds of plugins together and blend together …!!!!!!!!
And make that shit mid-side!
excuse me what???
@@XVIIIPRO yessir!!!
@@ezurg01 Splitter for the win 💪🏿
7:07 FAX!! Add a saturator in there, and you've got pure gold.
29:39 every week we see Devonn's life flash before his very eyes 😂😂😂
29:39 dude went from help me, devvon! to "help me!" - Devvon lolll
Podcast is fire been watching forever! Teezio really be doing something crazy for the community!
3:57
There is already a Multi Band Gate from AIXDSP and it’s really great and an awesome concept!
Watching this podcast is just watching 3 guys argue over something they technically agree on and it's awesome
15:54 - 17:05 was the same thing metro boomin talked about with limiting in his beat mixes, but same thing applies when the mix has a vocal too. I noticed it more on my vocals how limiters will reduce the volume & the quality of your transients of your vocal & Instrumental. If you need it to hit a certain -Db (the wall/Ceiling you set your limiter to hit) just put the volume close to what you kept you set your limiter too & if your compressor is to dynamic (has loud & silent too noticeable IF it's not how you wanted) readjust your compressors threshold, ratio, so the loud and silent parts are closer, then set your gain/output to the limiters wall its gonna take some time to accurately put it on that -db, but you killed 2 birds with 1 stone & saved quality & loudness of your mix at the same time.
Another way is instead of using a limiter is to replace it with a soft clip & set the level to what you had your limiter on then soft clip super lightly that the soft clip processed -.01 db so it keep most of the quality (quality in music is transients) to save the transients. Not every sound you gotta have a super light compresssion, but it helps to when you have it process more then the -0.1db for style depending on genre you can have a distortion sound if thats what fit your genre because of it or it brings the lower frequences to be heard more with the loud frequencies.
Ngl these process takes some lookahead thinking type of production skills, its difficult to add more into your thinking process with what you know already AT First till you get how it works your just used to knowing what your mix needs.
Last one with Mozart 29:25 - 34:00 theirs a point made Mozart made some fye piano & he was deff to a point he could hear ENOUGH, maybe someone MIGHT....mixed his piano instrument, but at the end we got only his piano & we loved it we really loved how the piano set the tone for us that 1 instrument gave us a feeling that we used it for a mood, moment (UA-cam stream), & a movie scene till this day.
~PS- At the end of the day the way i look at music is whats felt & whats felt is whats heard so listening to songs on ear is what gives the feeling, but remember a hit could be made but a hit that hits home or felt gets more impact, understand that popularity plays a part for a fact. That just means best mix/master of a song is great but we love the feeling of the song and want to know we're not the only ones that witness the best of an artists skills also.
lmfao at Devvon's reaction to LJ saying "was he air pods noise cancellation deaf?" hahahahaha
Soothe & ProQ3 in 1 plugin kinda already exists it’s called TB Pro Audio - DSEQ3
You said soothe and Pro Q3 and Soothe, But I immediately thought about Pro Q-3 and Saturn. Saturn type saturation on every band and being able to change it or switch to mid side would be insane.
Spectre basically
5:22 already exists. Its called firepresser, you can blend 4 different compressors on a x/y pad.
Plug in name “The Rosetta special” where eq and compression combine
Pretty sure Analog Obsessions COMPER does exactly what he was talking about with blending compressors. Don't sleep on the free plugins ;)
Nah dev right fr, their both tools but your ears are the dominant sense
Love the pod! Keep it up fellas!
Devvon look like David Lucas 😂😂 another fire ep in da books 🔥
First time I’ve seen someone introduce the pod 10 mins after.😂😂😂
Ain't been round here much? Lol 😅
the only thing F6 has over ProQ3 is it has attack and release settings. They need to add that to Pro Q3 asap
FirePresser by UnitedPlugins has 4 styles of compressors that you can blend.
36:30 LETS GO OHAD 🙌🙌🙌
Brooooo
Hahahahaha LJ, no cap bro you cooked this entire episode!!!!!!!
Studio kinda has that lol with the splitter just have to make sure your plugin has a mix knob on both sides
Rosetta Stone, Combine the Rosetta Compressor and Rosetta EQ but add 3 band saturation and a Delay that doubles as a verb. (Think HDelay + RVerb or True Verb). Also add the ability to Reorganize the Chain (Like Harrison Bus Flow) & That plug would sell like a sandwich at a Bodega.
Ok so now I want a challenge where somebody only does a mix visually and somebody only does a mix auditory
The og phat rack combo was ott and camel phat/crusher
that edit was was nastyyyy work bucko 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pro q 3 gives me sm latency issues f6 rta been my go to, really like using it for tucking frequencies out of the way on main melody on the sides to give room for vocals
What stops then from using AI is access to stems. All these AI sites don’t give you the option to download individual stems. You have to use stem separators
Fl studio patcher combine compressors and blend done!
early eps so good thank you
L Jean dropped the ball for not coming up with the Fruity Channel strip. Fruity balance, fruity parametric 2 and fruity limiter all in one plug-in. Rosetta channel strip sounds like something I'd buy... Coz channel strips make mixing hella easy😅😂
29:40 Dev gotta box L once filming stops 🤣😭
You guys should try to get Fareed Salamah the pod!!
OUTRO: The audio nerds for podcasts like yourself 😂
8:55 you gotta admit that is “rawe” (iykyk)
Lmao
nawww you dont know how to use that f6 on th3 mix fa real! That midside cLEARS SOOOO MUCH AND DEFINES SOOO MUCH.. and im with you Devon I only use channel strips and knobs for eqs on vocals .. visual eqs are for instrumentation , full mixes or grouped sounds
UAD got an 1176 combined with an LA2A
using NI midi keyboards you dont have to load the instrument to demo it. each one plays as you scroll through the sounds
Yeah Kontakt blows , to monitor a library you have to load it and it’s slow it’s just a painful process
Bobby Flay said yall was cookin
COMPER by Analog Obsession and I believe IK Multimedia T-RackS Joe Chiccarelli Vocal Strip has the 2+ comps with blending I believe
Sunday night release?! LETS GOOOO😮💨🔥🔥🔥🔥
i agee soothe 2 and proq3 powerfull!!!!!!🤯
obviously y'all have never used Komplete control... @ 8:15 lol
Mannnn I told my homie yesterday “With all these tools, I think the loudness war is totally over”
I just recorded my 1st R&B EP and I’m not like the louder masters.
My theory now is ALWAYS go for “feel”
@TruthHayesMusic 😤
I have a question if you can help me community. Can i use ssl channel plugin for subtractive eq, or is it a lost cause?
I use a combination of the two. My theory is that the artist is using their vocal as an instrument so with that being said I take the approach of mixing in the key of the song. For example the song is in the key of F#Maj I’ll mix the voice in F#pentatonic omitting the 3rd and 7th scale degrees as needed, using the notes feature in pro q to select a frequency that sounds harsh and then sweeping the different bands with that note to see where it feels balanced within the mix.
NAWW. Its DEF rosetta e-compander doggie (a hmd channel strip) in the small print
LMAO
lol in reason you can do this in the combinator on a whole other level
@ljean what interface you end up going with ?
Luv the pod to death! Devvon is my dude but he got start pulling out the card board slots in his hats bruh
you guys need a logic pro person up here as its the most common DAW
They’ve had like 2-3
S/O To Gang 🏁🏁
25:33 I could tell he says 🤣🤣🤣
LJ my man, talking into the mic please lol
Call it, Rosetta - "Stone Channel Strip"
NEVER RID A BIKE.. WHAT CHILDHOOD WAS THAT???
Is courtney jamaican???
His explanation of why he looks at the RTA contradicts his process of sweeping.
If you’re looking at the RTA and still can’t tell what’s wrong then you may not even understand how to read it properly and should just turn it off and sweet as people have been for decades.
The sweeping process is pretty much used because there’s no visuals and no precise knowledge. In the flip side, people that really know frequencies don’t sweep much because they know exactly what they’re going for.
Devvon’s explanation is better for someone who knows frequencies.
Got hit with 3 minutes unskipable advertisement 😂
28:30 🤣🤣🤣🤣
telling someone you can tell they dont know how to ride a bike is crazy lmao
Rosetta Compadre 😂
31:26 It was Beethoven that was deaf bro…
Yeaaa we corrected ourselves
@@LJean1 🐐’s btw
And am L Jay 😂😂😂
Rosetta E Comp
I’m not is crazy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Watch the Amadeus movie(1984).. 😂 Mozart was NOT deaf! He deff heard all his bops 🎶🎵🙃🙂😁😄😂🤣! Beethoven started going deaf later on in his career, that is why a lot of his older stuff was BANG BANG BA BANG!....... I just heard ya'll make the correction as I was writing ✍️🏾 this, so I ain't deleting ✌🏾😂
Got ya!! Wordddd thanks for the knowledge
@@LJean1 gotcha, keep up the dope content
Beethoven fam 😂
Beethoven?
The baddies use logic
rosetta compounder 😭🤣
LJ will eventually get this pod canceled 😂😂😂. AirPods noise cancellation is top 10 the wildest comments in history😂😂
"that Alzheimers hittin"
Skkrrrrrrrrrr
Love the show yall gotta stop taking over Courtney tho!! He doesn’t speak up a lot but a lot of the times yall kinda squash his voice
lj take the barcode off your hat bro
LOL You can't measure with your ears Devvon and the ears deceive you more than your eyes, in any task that requires measurements to be successful your eyes are the most important tool. Remember all aspects of music can be measured.
Bruh and this R&B voice 😂 L ITS AN AUDIO PODCAST
😭the female mastering engineers be listening gang
Son all the time
I have to turn up the volume to hear @LJean1 and as soon as I do, Devvon and Court almost blow my monitors lol
Lol there's a reason why stevie wonder is not an engineer
because he’s a legend for vocals 😂
This episode was not about what I thought it was. Y'all were all over the place...Decent discussion, just didn't match the title...clickbait, I guess
I’ve notice a lot of the titles don’t really totally match 🤔- amazing podcast still 🔥🔥🔥
On a sundayyyyy 💎💎💎🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
The Rosetta Stone plugin would actually be a really nice idea to check out. @damnkeli
So fun fact yall Beethoven wasn’t born Deaf he became deaf later in his 40s. Which is why his later work before he died was super loud and dissonant. Because he was desperately trying to hear something. @musical_vigilanty
