  • Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he shows how to test and repair a blower motor on a 2012 Ford F-150 that is stuck on a medium speed and will not change. Now usually when blower motor resistors fail you still have high or only loose the lower speeds. Lets grab a diagram and a meter and test this baby before slapping parts at it! --Enjoy

    This is why I started watching SMA. Two years ago I had the same problem with my 04 F150 and searched UA-cam for a fix, I found a guy who showed what to look for and how to repair it I don't remember who it was but I got hooked in watching car repair videos that's when I found SMA and have been a fan ever since!! Thank you Eric!

    I had today off and I thought take a ride and see if I could visit EricO ...so I headed out to SMA from E.A. New York and then about and hour and 45 min later I arrived at SMA and was greeted by Mrs O..and introduced me to "The Man!". Him and I talked for a little while about some mechanic stuff witch was pretty basic...because for me I am a carpenter(by profession) and a DYI mechanic and the I have to pay someone to fix my vehicles if it out of realm of capabilities. Anyways the point of this comment is to say Thank you Mr and Mrs O for being so nice and thanks for SMA swag. Also thank you for taking the time. You two are awesome!!!

    Thanks man,no BS and precise instruction. Read my mind when you explained how to do it with just a volt meter. It’s rare that I can find exactly what i need in a clear and exact way in the amount of time that it should take. Was beginning to wonder if it was just me or if I was being impatient because when I need to learn how to do something I normally go for the instruction because UA-cam is usually a waste of time for me, but not today.

    Thanks for the great video and wiring diagram a few years back! Tried a non-OEM part of AMAZON and did not fix our blower (But with your testing mechanism I proved it to myself it had to be a bad part). As soon as I replaced the resistor with the OEM part working like a champ (OEM is more expensive 30 vs 85 which is why I tried it first)! Seems OEM part is the only way to go here!

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 років тому

      Boy, I wanna say GM had a TSB on those and a updated kit... what year is it, I'll look? Also I have seen issues on some of the GM's that have repeat resistor failure (melt downs) where the blower motor amperage was a tad on the high side. I have several known good amperage specs on those in my notes.

    • @1970chevelle396

      South Main Auto Repair Its a 2006 . It wasn't all melted. When I unplugged it I had to really look and I could see that just one terminal looked like it got hot. When I was going to Southern California it worked I would stop at the gas station then it wouldn't work. The next time I would stop it would start working again. The resistor wasn't bad.

      Yep memory served me right:
      #PIT3688A: BLOWER MOTOR INOPERAT IN ANY ONE OR MORE BLOWER SPEEDS - KEYWORDS CONNECTOR HIGH HVAC LOW MEDIUM RESISTOR TERMINAL (JAN 4, 2006)
      Condition/Concern:
      Blower motor inoperative in one or more blower speeds. This concern is due to a loose connection at the blower motor resistor.
      Recommendation/Instructions:
      Inspect the connection at the blower motor resistor. Replace the blower motor resistor and any terminals in the female part of the connector that show evidence of arching or corrosion. The replacement connector and terminals are listed below.
      Part Number 15306069, Female Connector With Leads. Replace the connector body with leads only if the connector body shows signs of damage. It may be necessary to generate a SPAC case to obtain this connector with leads.
      Part Number 12176387, Replacement Female Terminal. This terminal is made of copper-beryllium and can be located in Delphi tray 3 of your Packard kit. Only replace the terminal(s) if the connector body has no evidence of damage.
      Replace the blower motor resistor only if it shows signs of arching or corrosion at its terminals. Use current SPO stock.

    yep the old days an ohm meter and voltmeter ya was gold. you just showed in the last 2 videos that unless you know how it works you really dont know what meter to use. when in doubt get the scope out. that control could be analog digital or a mixture of both. make a guy want to let the smoke genie out and wire it up right !

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 років тому +2

      Thing is now days guys in the shop have no excuse for not owning a scope. You can get one to do stuff like this for a hundred bucks and something decent for 500. If they can't invest into the tools to fixem right then they are in the wrong trade IMO. Thing is too it is nothing new like people tend to think. I have a full lab scope ignition meter from the early 80's. I think it is just the fact that no one uses them perhaps?

    +South Main Auto Repair I had no burned connector, old resistor was stuck in 3rd setting on all commands. The black with white stripe going to the resistor is the ground feed and it had 34 Ohms of resistance, which I found to be off if its supposed to be a heavy ground supply. T-tapped a ground into the black with white stripe, soldered that for a good connection. All the settings work but then I noticed the new resistor would crap itself if the truck was turned on and running, in either of the top speed settings, even with the new ground. The blower motor would lose its ground feed at the motor from the resistor, with a new resistor! Parts are crap now days. Ordered up another one. Nothing else it could be that I can figure out at this point from my scanner readings.

      You're probably right. My failed I think because it was in the same position as that MAP in the F150 is your recent video. The connector was so rusted I had to completely destroy it to get it off. I know most people like to see repair videos, but I'd like to know what your experience has been with direct injection. I can see how conventional fuel injection and electronic ignition has improved reliability. An ETCG1 style video would be cool. By the way your videos are top notch. You're a natural in front of the camera. Ever consider acting?

    Interesting that it was stuck on medium. Every blower motor I have replaced seems to be stuck on High or rather only work on high. All of the ones I have done have been on cars with a speed setting switch (knob). Do the digital ones work different than the more manual with the knob.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 років тому +2

      That is common on the GM's like that because they use a separate relay circuit for speed five

    • @focusfrenzy9759
      @focusfrenzy9759 7 років тому +3

      old school blowers have resistors for the lower than high settings so when the motor starts to gum up and it draws more amps it over loads the resistors and burns those out and you are left with direct power on high till the motor fails or it blows the fuse.
      this Ford uses the unusual method of pulsing the ground on and off at different speeds to control motor speed, the HVAC controller sends a pulsed signal to the speed control and it uses that to vary the speed.
      some use a AC brushless motor, their controller sends a speed signal to the motor controller and it converts the DC battery power into AC power and the frequency of the AC power is varied to change the speed of the motor.

    I had to change the resistor, and solder in a new pigtail connector on my 05 chevy colorado, which should have been fixed in a recall, considering how many of these burn up the connector pin and the resistor. Luckily I looked this up and found out that there was a tsb for this problem and didn't have to chase the problem down. My next vehicle will probably be a Toyota or a hondu, even though growing up my gramps would get fired up if anyone in the family bought a foreign car, called them jap scrap, of course he was a w.w.2 vet and a little prejudiced towards American built cars. I buy what lasts me the longest, and is well built, got this vehicle from a family member at a good price or I'd be in something with a better reputation. I have had pretty good luck with it over the last 6 years, this is the only thing besides brakes and tires I've had to deal with, but it was maintained properly before I got it, and that does help. I live in michigan, so I can appreciate your struggle with the rust monster. Thanks again Eric, for another great video, short or long, they are always good entertainment, and keep me up to date on the newer vehicles. You need to have your wife do another fix it video, you guys are pretty funny.

    Yeah that's usually the problem when the blower motor only works on one speed we called it a reostat I've done a few of them.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm using a standard multimeter and I'm at the step that I'm checking the voltage at the white/purple & black/white. Fan on low= 41.1. Each fan speed higher drops the voltage = 38.7/34.8/29.9/25.1/19.2/13.0. Turn the fan off and it's now 51.4. I've replaced the blower motor and nothing changes, so maybe it's something else?

    My comment vanished. I was talking about how I had a f150 same year with a blower stuck on the 3rd setting. Changed the resistor when the PWM signal was good and responsive. It acted right for 30 min then would shut off and turn back on a minute later on the two high settings. I checked the blower found the ground missing then i checked the black with white stripe feed to the resistor and it had 36 ohms of resistance, which seemed quite high. T tapped a new ground in to it only to find I had a bad resistor out of the box. Ordered a new one, that wont have to deal with the ground problem now.

    Hello Eric! This is my first comment to SMA. I can't tell you how informative your videos are to an amateur like myself. I wanted to ask if you have come across any/many cases of lower intake manifold gasket failures on SBC/350's and the symptoms /diagnosis you followed. Thanks again.

    You had better check current from fan motor, this is what usually takes out that controller!

    On the Chevy TrailBlazer,they melt the harness and fry. I had to replace mine twice. Its pretty much a given on GM vehicles that it is replaced. Thank god the prices went down on them. Oh, you have a choice on where to get them. OEM comes from Canada, after market says Mexico. They are prone for going bad after a while. Ford,no idea.

    How about testing for excessive amp draw from the blower motor, might have contributed to the failure of the speed control module?

      I was looking for a comment like this one. Without seeing this video, based on the symptoms, how do we know that there is no issue with the blower motor?

    • @for2utube

      Was going to say something similar - in my (limited) experience these things are somewhat like fuses, in that something caused it to blow, either low airflow from clogged filter allowed it to get too hot or high amp draw from motor. Should check upstream for the cause.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 7 років тому +1

      it should blow the fuse when on highest setting if it was that bad off

    • @anthonybeaudry6066

      if you have a known good amp draw reading for the blower motor that would be a good idea. maybe even an amp clamp to see if their might be an intermittent
      high amp draw. dc motor could be starting to short to the metal casing from road vibration.

    Did you take the old blower motor speed controller apart and have a peak inside? Is it just a transistor on a heat-sink or does it have some kind of "intelligence"?
