Penix would thrive in a balanced offense with intermediate and deep pass routes due to elite arm strength and accuracy throwing to all levels of a defense. Deep ball arm strength (1:29:34) (1:06:45). Elite into tight windows (1:32:51) (27:05). Elite ball placement/touch (28:14) (1:02:53) (1:04:44) (1:23:39) (1:35:45). Very good ability to slide in pocket, keep eyes downfield, re-set, and deliver a strike (1:29:00) (1:31:00). Very good off platform without feet pointed toward target (58:30) (1:26:45) and will go off script (57:41). He makes full field reads and manipulates defenders with his eyes to open up throwing windows. Very good competitive, physical, and mental toughness, has comeback from severe injuries and will make the big plays need in crunch time to win games (Apple Cup, bad 1st half vs Utah, 2 wins over Oregon, career game vs Texas). He has adequate set up mechanics in quick game, doesn't tie eyes and feet together causing his accuracy to drop (27:12) (49:40). Adequate production off script, athletic enough to avoid rushers in the pocket but is not a runner (100 yards in 2 years), and will elect to throw ball away limiting production outside the pocket. Needs a solid or better OL to protect him due to prior injuries and deep drops needed in the pocket w/receivers with solid or better ability to run Deep Posts, Flags, Gos, and Digs. This video is a highlight tape, and if he somehow gets passed over in round 1 due to his injury history I would trade up and get him in the top of the 2nd round.
I don’t think he gets past the Vikings at #23. His tape is light years better than McCarthy, it just comes down to how much the teams will weigh his injury history. To me, I’ve seen enough to take him over McCarthy, they are both risky picks but penix’s tape is far more impressive
Thanks for these videos man. There’s very little to dislike about Penix as a passing quarterback, other than the fact that he can get sporadic at times and the injuries history.. If I’m drafting Penix, I’m also drafting receivers that fit his play style, specifically guys who are good when it comes to winning the 50-50 passes. Maybe there’s a desire that he was a bit more dynamic in terms of his athleticism, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s the best pocket passing quarterback in this draft, and the throw he makes at 28:14 really show his prowess in passing. I know it’s very high praise, but I liken him to a left handed CJ Stroud. That’s my comparison.
@@davidwillis8623 if someone made the statement, Michael Penix is 24 years old in May, they signed Kirk cousins for four years $180 million, if they got three years out of cousins and kept Michael Penix on the bench, by the time he starts, he would be 27 years old… That’s an interesting thing, I’m not sure they would
@@davidwillis8623 I completely agree… That’s why I can’t understand the argument of “JJ McCarthy is younger and has more upside”. This is awesome, thanks for you hard work. Man, this Washington offense was stacked. The more i watch the more i like Penix, Odunze, Polk, McMillan... Even Bernard and Jackson are nice.
And you can tell by the drops that Penix was the talent elevating them, he wasn’t bailed out by them except making tough catches when they did and that’s just NFL throws at that point
He also keeps his body square, his release/timing is mostly sound. Quintessential pocket QB, he's definitely talented plus he has the size/vision to see downfield.
Just watched this right after watching Drake Maye’s full season of throws. Don’t get me wrong I understand Maye didn’t have the protection and weapons Penix had, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how Maye is projected that much higher. The way the ball jumps off Penix’s hand is insane. Incredible accuracy, super tight spiral, and great decisiveness. If past injuries weren’t a factor, he’d be getting picked top 3 without question. As a Vikings fan, Penix low key excites me more than any other QB in the draft outside of maybe Daniels.
@@ADSeason25 Maye isn’t as accurate as Penix, Maye just has a /further/ deep ball thanks to a longer/elongated release and more hip torsion to get it down the field. Penix also has way better footwork than Maye.
It's wild how much longer this is than Mccarthy's tape, 😂😂 I don't understand how people are taking Mccarthy seriously as a 1st rd pick. This dude is so much better.
@@USAinPhillipineProvinceWatch this video. Penix does it literally dozens of times. Additionally, if you can’t see the differences in the types of offenses Michigan runs vs Washington’s style, in what he is asked to do, then you aren’t scouting correctly.
@@USAinPhillipineProvince I would also ask you, why is the “Offscript“ stuff a downgrade for a Michael Penix Jr, but that’s basically what’s going to get a Caleb Williams drafted first overall..? And I’m also not a guy who likes to use stats, but there’s no way Penix leads the nation in passing by just scrambling around and throwing the ball.. do you think he had all those numbers by improvising? Do you think he threw for thousands of yards by just throwing jump balls to Rome? To say he isn’t adept at being in rhythm and on time in passing doesn’t make sense and is a lazy analysis.
McCarthy threw the ball significantly less than Penix (or any of these top QBs) did because of Michigan's ridiculous running game so obviously his overall film would be shorter. and McCarthy is 3 years younger with way less injury history so he's got way more upside than Penix. and McCarthy is undeniably the more accurate passer which both his film and statistics back up. he also played with less talent than Penix did, as Penix had the best contested catcher in CFB (Odunze), one of the best contested catchers in CFB (Polk), and one of the best slot WRs in CFB (McMillin) not to mention a pretty damn good TE and RB too. and Penix played in a college-like, spread offense while McCarthy played in a NFL style offense....i personally don't understand how people are confused about why most people, including the NFL, believe McCarthy is a 1st round QB over Penix...
@@yesimchase I don’t know, it’s easier to throw the ball and be consistent when you can pass off of play action, you’re not asked to do it many times, and defenses are playing the run, versus Penix, who was asked to carry the team and threw the ball over 100 more times… I think it’s a mistake to downgrade Penix for playing with very good receivers when comparing him with JJ McCarthy.. I think if you draft Penix, you draft him because you want to have a vertical passing game, think Cincinnati or Tampa. He played in the system with receivers that fit his strengths, and it would be fooIish this to draft a guy like him If you’re not planning to build around him, the way the Dolphins built around Tua Tagovailoa. I think they both can, and will succeed in the league, but based on my style, I would say, Michael Penix would be the better passing quarterback in the league.
