  • This video will show you how to replace the a/c compressor and condenser on a Lexus ES300. If you choose not to replace the condenser and if it's partially clogged, you run the risk of new compressor failure in less than a month...and forget about collecting on a warranty claim. You must show proof of installing a new condenser or receipt of a cleaned condenser from a professional a/c repair shop.
    The procedure and steps should be virtually identical to the ES300's cousin which is the V6 Camry and Avalon. In addition, all disconnected a/c hose and connection points will have their O rings replaced along with the high and low pressure service port schrader valves. This will ensure a complete seal of the a/c system. Approximately 2 oz of PAG 46 compressor oil will be added to the factory pre-oiled compressor to compensate for lost residual oil in the condenser and attached accumulator. The system will then be evacuated (or vacuumed) to remove any residual moisture before introduction of 26 to 30 oz of R134a refrigerant. The evacuation of the system will require the use of an a/c vacuum pump along with high (red), low (blue) and vacuum service (yellow) hoses to be connected to an a/c manifold with high and low pressure gauges. The vacuum pump, hoses and a/c manifold can be rented from retail auto parts providers like Autozone or Oreilly's. You many have to purchase an a/c refill can adapter to connect to the yellow service hose if not available for rent.
    The replacement parts used in this video are made by Denso. Denso is the OEM provider for Toyota and Lexus.
    The typical repair cost for this job can reach up to $1,400. If you do the repair yourself, the parts may cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $400... a savings of around $1,000.

    This is a great video but for someone who has fewer than 100 hours of working on cars I need a more organized approach,,,a more by the numbers approach. That's not a criticism of you but a confession by me of how much I don't know. I think that taking the radiator and alternator out and putting them back in is the easy part. I've never done it but I'm sure I could do it. I have an RX 300 and the A/C doesn't work. My first thought is to take to an A/C place to have them do a diagnosis. I downloaded some documents from Denso and it seems that my system has a leak and is empty of any Freon. But the person I got the car from was told that it needed a compressor. So it will be an adventure. What I feel the mosts lost on is all of the work on the A/C system itself in terms of getting the right things in the right places under the right pressure.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  3 роки тому

      First check the pressure before turning the engine on. Should be over 70 psi. If not, you've got a leak. Also. Check your ac fuse. Usually 10 amps.

    Great video and just in time as I'm replacing the a/c compressor with a new Denso unit. Provided instructions are vague for compressor oil. Pre-installed oil was 3.75oz....specs call for 7oz oil for compressor. Bought some PAG 46

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 років тому +1

      If you're going to replace the condenser and accumulator, add approximately 3 oz of oil to compensate for the lost oil from the replacement. If not, add only 1 oz to compensate for lost oil during compressor installation. You can add the extra oil via 12 oz freon cans with 1 oz of oil (giving you 11 oz of freon per can). So 2 cans gives you 2 oz ... and you can add the additional 1 oz into the compressor. If you're using no oil freon cans, add the oil via the high pressure service port by removing the schrader valve and sucking it in by attaching your vacuum pump to the low pressure service port. I made a video on how to do that ... BTW.

    • @aggrex
      @aggrex 5 років тому

      @@hardlymovingpro Understand about the CYA explanation but I plan to install the new Denso compressor which had 3.75 oz of oil...so you're suggesting to add one more oz of oil, correct? Thanks for quick response

      That's correct ... add 1 oz if not replacing the condenser and accumulator. However, read the Denso warranty. If you cannot provide proof that you cleaned/replaced the condenser, replaced the accumulator and the expansion valve, they will not honor any warranty claims on a failed compressor.

      That's really up to you. If you leave the radiator in place, you'll need to remove the alternator to get a clear path to the compressor. • @IvanPerez-dv5et
    @IvanPerez-dv5et 5 років тому

    Why did you have to change the condenser? How do you diagnose that?

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 років тому +3

      Because if you cannot show proof that either the condenser was replaced or was cleaned/purged with the new compressor installation, the compressor supplier will not honor any future warranty claims. They also want you to replace the expansion valve as well. Anyway, the tubes inside a condenser is so narrow, blowing out and cleaning any debris with solvent is next to impossible. The replaced compressor in this video was making a heck of a lot of noise and I couldn't take the risk that debris from this compressor's internals worked their way to the condenser. In the past, I had tried to save the customer money by not replacing the condenser only to burn myself a month later with a failed compressor. With both a new compressor and condenser, the risk of failure is next to zero. But if you want to save money, just replace the compressor and cross your fingers. If it fails, forget about a warranty claim unless you show proof you've purchased both a new condenser and expansion valve. To show proof you cleaned the condenser, have a receipt from a professional a/c shop.
      The only way to diagnose a clogged condenser is to install a new compressor, evacuate, recharge the system and observe the high side pressure. I'd say if you can't get past 150 to 170 psi, you've got a clog ... which means you have to replace the condenser ... which means evacuate again and start the repair process again if you did already damage the compressor. Most full service a/c repair shops will not replace the compressor without a new condenser. They're in CYA mode. Hence the average cost of an a/c job being around $1,400.

      If it went out because of a a worn out clutch ... then yes, I'd say you can get away with it. But be forewarned. After evacuation and recharge, if the high pressure side does not get to 180 psi or higher, you probably have some debris impediment in the condenser tubes that needs to be cleared. Personally, I don't take the chance since new condensers are inexpensive (under $100) and not that big a deal to replace. If you're going to remove the radiator to get to the compressor from the top of the engine, you're half way there in removing the condenser.

    You say: "Make sure there isn't any residual Freon pressure. Your local A/C shop can remove any Freon still in the lines." What? I can call a local A/C shop and someone will come out and remove freon from the lines? Really? Hard to believe. At least not for less than $100.

    I like your work, but some owners shouldn't own Lexus's or any Toyota's hahaha !
    I mean come on, they seriously can't afford to replace hood/bonnet struts ?, i bet they didn't even use an OEM condenser & compressor 😂

      True ... But there's a lot of 20+ yr old cars that are now affordable for the less financially fortunate.

      @@hardlymovingpro New struts are in my opinion a safety thing, back on the old land yachts, them things had massive springs that never needed replacing, they probably got rid of'em to maximise profit 😂😂😂

      But in the old days the springs were removed to be re-tempered to bring back tensile strength

      @@hardlymovingpro True, they were reusable, now it's planned obsolescence everything. Unless it's an old Toyota/Lexus then they go for years & years 😂
      Old denso compressors if ran frequently run well past 200k and still never need a charge, stay freezing cold, etc.
      And YES the A/C should always remain on even in winter, it keeps humidity down, thus preventing the glass fogging up. Even having the temp on HOT or 28°C, the a/c's purpose then is to keep moisture down to a minimum 😀😄

    Bottom line don’t buy a Lexus. Drive a Bicycle.

      The ES300 is a Camry / Avalon V6 with different body panels and interior. They all use the MZ-FE V6 engine. Most of the mechanical parts are not unique to the ES300 and interchangeable with other Toyota vehicles. Bicycle is good ... as long as it's not too cold, windy, raining, snowing, carrying stuff, going up a hill, etc.
