For those who are looking for rules of nps for government employees
    1) First of all u can't select individual fund manager for each asset class. But now u can select from a bigger options of fund managers apart from the government ones
    2) still there is a cap of 50% Max for equity class
    3) if u want to select only one assest class for yourself than u can select only government security for 100% allocation.

If one removes 100% of pension funds, then the purpose of receiving monthly Pension after retirement fails. The purpose of 40% lock-in is that you have lifetime recurring income.

    • @Apache1970

@@krishnaavinash1284 I was referring to the possibility of investing in treasury bills instead of annuity. The annuity companies invest the pension funds in bonds and they deduct their commissions from the returns. This is why the annuity returns are so low. Hence why not give subscribers the choice of directly investing in bonds instead of annuity. This way the middlemen ( pension fund companies) can be avoided.

    • @shankarnath

Hello, the pension will depend on a) the SLW options you choose (i.e. frequency & amount) for the 60% amount and b) the annuity option you choose for the 40% amount (again - type of annuity, deferred vs immediate, frequency, return of price etc.). You can structure the annuity part to receive pension your entire life. You'll have to talk to you life insurance agent for this when you are approaching 60 years.

Does it makes sense to invest in NPS tier-2 account, thinking of it a low cost mutual fund for short term goals.? I was thinking I'll park some extra money in it, apart from my current mutual funds investments of course. I get 80 CCD(2) deduction on my tier-1 contribution. At this point, I'm not sure about contributing more in tier -1. I was thinking I'll put the extra money in tier-2 account and if I decide to increase allocation to tier-1 I'll move that money to tier-1. If i decide otherwise, I can withdraw that money anyways or let it earn returns in tier-2 account.

Hi Mukesh - EPFO isn't bad. I mean, its 8.25% now .. even if we average it to 7.5% over the long run, this is 7.5% tax free. At your 30% tax slab, this comes to 10.7% pre-tax. You'll have to examine it in that basis. Prima facie, I feel NPS should be additional and not a replacement for EPF. What do you say?

Thank you so much Shankar sir, wonderful video on all updates regarding the NPS. I would like to get your view on a larger NPS question please.
Say a fresh graduate at age 24 starts investing in NPS and retires at 58. This person now needs to withdraw the 60% as a part of their retirement corpus. As per current Income tax limits, most of us have utilized the 80C limit of 1.5L in various other savings instruments like PF, PPF, ELSS funds etc and are left with just 50k per year on NPS. So from age 24 to 58, that is 34 years so just 17 lakh (as per current limits on 80 DD). Even if we assume a quadrupling of the returns by age 58, this amounts to just 68 lakhs. And per latest update, 27.2 lakh will have to be spent into an annuity so the person will be eligible for just 40.8 lakh as lumpsum. Isn't that too little after 34 years?
One might say what stops us from using the additional 1.5 lakh in tier 2 account if we have the spare money, but is it not more advisable to then put this money in Mutual funds over NPS so that, in case of any emergency, we are able to access this fund.
I feel the tax component of the monthly pension on the 40% annuity of NPS has made it a much less attractive product than in previous circumstances. Looking forward to your response and thank you for your patience while reading my response.

This is related to Systematic Withdrawal.
In case of mutual funds, If I withdraw each month under SWP, rest of the amount will be linked to fund performance. By that, I mean that if the fund is giving an XIRR as 10%, the rest of the amount will grow @10%
But I am not sure about the same in case of NPS. There is no mention about how this 60% amount will be treated in case on SWP. Hope it will not be a case where this amount will get a interest equal to bank fixed deposit or no interest at all.
