Nowadays you can just memorise 10-20 moves on the opening, that translates do players having more time to study end games, therefore the gap closes
thats 10-20 moves per line though :D you need to know like 15 variations of your opening with thousands of possibilities to be effective

In online, I'm sure it's rampant. Obviously not like whole games, they would catch that. But on an important move where for example you think a sacrifice might be good, a quick glance to make sure the computer doesn't hate it could easily be the difference in a lot of games.

Fabiano's statement is just simple bayesian logic. A cheater is more likely to become a world top 10 than a non-cheater, making it more likely that a world top 10 at some point was a cheater
People need to not let their ego get in their way and cloud their judgment. Also if your losing at any level at anything just git gud and don't pint fingers just cause your losing

I'll say this: you can't trust humans to not cheat when they play chess online.
In other sports, you don't "trust" the athletes. You institute rules and penalties. You regulate. You randomly drug test. You watch the game from every angle. Hell, you might not even allow allow players to wear a particular sleeve, mask, or cup. You might inspect hands and equipment for resin.
Given modern technology and the internet chess boom, players cannot be trusted. They must be treated, universally, with suspicion. They must be forced to follow the rules.

Here is the thing. Chess is getting more popular which means you have a lot more people studying to a similar level as the top players. I do not think that the gap is closing but the number of top chess players is definitely increasing

Cheating accusations hasn't provided any significant backlash or repercussions BUT it has got them press and attention. Until there's enough actual punishment for false accusations, it's a publicity stunt that allows each person to get their name up there and avoid the hardest part, being forgotten as another "Pro player"

Levi has a great video, yelling cause the computer had the king breaking every traditional rule of behavior like. (The king walks square by square to a castled position). A billion calculations determined this was the best mode of play. The humans games will improve of course. So the questions becomes - was that a move of brilliant human calculation or was it something we learned playing the 4200 rated machine player?

To say that someone who has been in the top 10 (not the current top 10) has cheated at some point (not necessarily when they were a top player) is not paranoia and I'd bet money on it too. It's so easy to cheat and I'm sure at least one player has looked at the eval bar during a rated game.
