Polaris Xplorer Maintenance You Didn't Know About

  • Change transmission fluid, Counter Balance fluid, Muffler clean out, and grease points. I forgot 1 grease point on the middle eccentric behind the right tire.
    This is for a 1995-2001 Xplorer 400 two stroke but probably a sportsman as they have similar motors.

    Wow. I've got a 96 Big Boss 6x6 currently at a Polaris dealer getting a bunch of services done, one of them being a service that should encompass this. Definitely gives an otherwise ignorant customer the knowledge to know what to check as far as service been done! Thank you so much

      Bonus: Ask if these things were done. They are in the manual but are often over looked. Mostly the "counter balance" oil as people don't think 2 strokes take oil.

    Looking for someone that could help me find a problem with my 1994 polaris xplorer 400 4x4.
    It started when the engine could not be shut off with the key. Installed a new switch, that wasn't the problem. Now the engine starts ok and runs fine until it warms up a bit then it shuts down and won't start again until it cools down. What could be causing that?

      If it came out of the "counter balance" plug then either: 1. it has been a long time since you changed it or 2. you have coolant leaking into it. Mine was white/water but had not been changed since new in '95. Check your coolant level if that is fine, change the oil again in a year and hopefully it is clean.

      You have to use a 2-stroke injection oil that is rated for oil injection systems. Polaris sells one that is called VES I believe and Lucas makes one that I use. I know there are other brands out there but make sure you get one that produces less smoke. You'll like it better.

      @@Randy7025 do you have to mix it ? Or just put it in straight from the container

    • @Randy7025
      @Randy7025 3 роки тому

      @heather carroll As long as no one has disconnected the oil pump or the oil pump has not failed, there is no need to pre-mix your gas/oil. If you are uncertain about whether the oil pump is working, you would need to fill the oil reservoir and mark the level with a sharpie marker. Pre-mix the gas and run the quad until the tank is nearly empty. You can then check the oil reservoir to see if the level has dropped. If so, no need to continue pre-mixxing and just monitor oil level. You should be able to get at least three tank fulls of gas through the quad until you need to add more oil.

    Your not telling me what injection oil to put into the front of the machine

      This is maintenance you didn't know about. If you run more then 2 tanks of gas you need to add 2-stroke oil in that front tank. Your local ATV shop will sell it. I use AMS Oil 2 stroke about $40 a gallon.

    If the oil was white, sounds like your water pump seal may be bad

      Humm. Good to know. It has never been changed since 1995 so I will see what happens next year when I change it. Also my coolant has not gotten lower so maybe it is a small leak.

    1:56 Why is there a 10mm socket on an American? Because the 10mm is always gone, never to be found. They choose that size to make any repair or maintenance frustrating as you spend an hour trying to find the 10mm; give up and try vice grips; give up again to try and find the 10mm again; give up a third time and try with some other tool until you finally give up for the last time, quit working for the day just for the damn 10mm to phase back into our dimension after it had a leisurely stroll through time itself; you are furious that it suddenly appeared after hours; you then finally find the motivation to finish up the job and then find out that you never needed to loosen that 10mm bolt anyways cause the problem was from another part of the vehicle that is broken and you have to wait a week for the new part to come in the mail. The End.

    Try taking it off with a wrench or ratchet instead of an impact. To much torque
