  • ASTM F1959 and IEC 61482-1-1 are Open Arc Flash Test methods differing from IEC 61482-1-2, the Box Test method and are commonly used for determining protective values for PPE used in protecting workers when OSHA 1910.269, ARCPRO or IEEE 1584 have been used to determine incident energy. These types of tests provide an ARC RATING of an ATPV, EBT, ELIM or an AR Limit or ARLIM. These ratings are used on arc flash PPE all over the world and comply with NFPA 70E, NESC, ANSI C-2, CAN/UL S801 and other arc flash standards for protecting electrical workers from arc flash exposure.

Wow Hugh, you covered a lot of information but did so at a high level so even an electrician can grasp many of the testing parameters used when testing AR fabric and garments. I was wondering why Salisbury test reports had their AR PPE tested by Aitex rather than Kenectrics which used EN ISO 61482 rather than ASTM F1959 then captured thermal data in J/cm2 rather than cal/cm2. But after watching your video I'm thinking they're marketing their product in the EU as well as the US.
In any case, you did a great job explaining all the different criteria required to ensure guys like me are adequately protected when we don our arc flash PPE prior to interacting with energized electrical equipment.

Many companies test with both IEC 61482-1-1 AND ASTM F1959. Aitex and Kinectrics both do these tests though Kinectrics developed the equipment and test parameters and continually strive to be the most repeatable lab. Our lab uses three control fabrics every month to control our test and to learn how to make it even better. We are ISO 17065 accredited and are a favored lab by most utility companies. Let us know if you ever want to watch our testing in Toronto or our expanded flame, thermal and cut test lab in Louisville, KY.

@@kinectricsarcwear3417 Is this Hugh? I was at e-Hazard back in May for the TTT in Louisville but Hugh was gone that week. When I asked Bill Shin how's Hugh doing, his reply was "Hugh who???" :-)
