If regular watering is the key to successful renovation after May, then I should be good for June. I missed the May renovation because of all of the rain and then my irrigation pump failed while it was still under warranty (new one installed now). I can program my Hunter system to water the two lawn zones every hour during the day if needed. I was amazed at the difference in root depth the deep watering made. When I aerated my lawn last May, I checked the plugs, and the roots were only a few centimeters below the surface. The previous years I had the irrigation system set for 15 minutes a day mid morning. After last year's major renovation, I changed the watering schedule to one hour twice a week at 0600 to put a little over 1cm of water on the lawn at a time (about one inch each week). When I took core samples this year for soil analysis, the roots extended about 10cm below the surface. Big difference!
Great advice I've been following your guidance for a while and have had outstanding results, you keep things stupid simple for clueless amateurs like me
Ahhh but it was the HOTTEST May on record!! Like EVER! In the 4.5 billion years! GLOBAL BOILING!!! All because you've not paid enough tax, not bought a BEV and a Heat Pump!! #ClimateScam
Silly question, never applied weed killer to my lawn, I've noticed some gerninum looking weed is popping thru, I pull the heads off daily. Is this enough ? Or should I put glyphosate in a syringe and apply one drop per "gernamium" ?
Hi yes sure will.. Just thin out the moss for now.. If you go really heavy you'll increase chances of needing to seed an it's getting less and less favourable conditions now
Hi Sean, loving your vids & learning soooo much..BUT!..heavy, clay soil up in Scotland so still loads of rain so i'm planning to start the restore this weekend..any advice for seeds suitable for type of soil please? 😊
Dude Have you seen the lawn frost warnings over the next 2 days. I seeded Sunday. And water 2 a day. Now we are due frost over night It is fleeced so I only hope that’s a bit of protection. Great advice Shaun. Thanks for everything you do. We appreciate it.
What about rain Sean. Say for example it’s rained pretty much constant for a few days followed by a dry spell with no real heat. Should we still water on those days in between rain? I sowed new seed back on 8th May and results are pretty good, but patchy in place. I find myself watering less though because of the rain. I’ve noticed that when I do that with my hanging baskets they suffer, therefore maybe I’m answering my own question - even though, the lawn should absorb rain better than the baskets of that makes sense.
Hi Sean, do you have any recommendations for type of grass seed for a heavy clay soil. Scarified and overseeded in April but generic grass seed struggling to germinate. I top dressed with sharp sand and top soil to no avail.
Hi it could have been because it's been so wet and it's essentially rotted.. You may get much better results now.. There are plenty out there now and will feature creeping grasses etc. Look. For clay king from garden lawn care guy etc
Hi Shaun, is it ok, in your opinion, to put the wire rake cartridge in my cobra scarifier and lightly rake any mossy lawns i have at regular intervals from now on, say once a month. The lawns i scarified in the spring i did not overseed as I know my elderly customers cant water and the seef would not germinate without it. Im hoping that they will naturally spread and fill in the gaps over the summer and then ill seed in the autumn.
Hi yes.. It will look rough if no watering though and I'd probably avoid the summer heat.. If we get rain regular it'll help a bit.. If at all worried porb best to wait till early autumn once the odd rain returns
I just went through all the process of scarifying, overseeding and top soiling in april after following your videos, and found i now have an infestation of horsetail weed in the lawn 😫. Im going to wait a few more weeks before for seeing if weedol will help the situation
Ahhh... It won't touch it.. Horsetail is very very hardy... Pretty much only roundup will touch it and you'll need to repeat a few times. Scrunch the weed first.. Then brush roundup on without getting it on the grass blades.
Hi. I've only recently subscribed and I've been following your advice. I'm gradually getting some kit together to improve the quality of my lawn. It's going to be later in the year now when I attempt my first restoration. So far I've applied, fertilizer then later Iron Sulphate. The weeds have mostly been dealt with now as a result of your advice and things are looking really good. It's just a normal lawn but no heavy use any more from children or pets and I was wondering if there was a particular brand of grass seed you'd recommend to overseed the gaps where the weeds have disappeared? Until last year I'd paid a firm to look after my lawns front and back and their service had got worse and worse over the years and the costs had gone up massively. After just a few weeks following your channel my lawns are looking the best they have in years and I'm looking forward to improving them further later in the year!
Hi there are ple ty of decent seed suppliers these days.. Hurrells seeds, Boston seeds, barenbrug and so on. If you're not masisvley fussed, hurrells do a "premium front lawn" seed which is quite nice.. Or for no thrillls just get a cheap box of amenity seed. So pleased you're giving it a go.. You won't look back 😊😊
I ask all of my customers if they can 100% guarantee they can water the lawn every single day until germination of seed. Usually about 3wks. If they can't commit to this then I advise them against Overseeding and just very lightly scarify so as not to remove to much grass. I do this with every customer regardless of the month where in. The onus is on them then.
could do with some advice regarding new lawn from seed, mines coming on a treat now but is there anything i can use to get rid of the weeds that have come through with it ? its 6 weeks now since it was planted but the weeds are having a field day with it :(
Hi 6 weeks is almost OK.. If it's looking healthy and vibrant you should now be ok to apply some weedkiller such as resolva for Lawns, weedol for lawns etc (make sure it says for Lawns). If the lawns not fully there yet I'd give it another couple of weeks
I renovated my front lawn a week ago and I've only watered a few times. It's been raining a lot since I put the seed down. I am worried I didn't put enough seed on though.
Scarified and aerated on Sunday. Fertilised, seeded, top dressed and put fleece down yesterday. Sprinkler set on timer to water for 8 minutes every six hours. Now just waiting for the local badgers, foxes and squirrels to dig everything up when the fleece comes off. 🙂.
Need to scarify old dead st Augustine runners. Perennial rye is fading. Want to overseas Bermuda seed and top dress with peat moss. Only thing it’s in the mid to high 90F and I’m 71?? Thanks
Hi Shaun, what is your approach on some parts of a lawn which does not receive enough water from the irrigation system? I noticed the grass having a darker green color, which got me to this conclusion. Now I am manually watering these zones with plenty of water, daily, to ensure there is enough water in the soil but I plan to stop this approach and start watering these zones once at 3 days (this is how the rest of the lawn has the irrigation system scheduled). I think is late to add more sprinkles at this moment of the year since the temperatures here are now at 30 degrees Celsius. I also have some burned spots because of the dogs urine, I tried to seed them, but because of the heat the new grass is not surviving.
Hi yes it's definitely more difficult when it's hot.. 30 degrees is awesome, whereabouts are you? As for the turf se how it goes an hopefully all good in a week or so.. If not could be something else..
I have got leather jackets in my lawn that I completely killed of for renovations.a lot of starlings are pecking on the surface,do you think they are pecking out the leather jackets?
How often would recommend watering new seed in June with the current weather conditions? I did my at the weekend and purchased your product on your website.. I have decided to fleece mine
Hi so the aim is to kepe them damp as often as possible. I'd definitely say 3 times a day but if the sun comes out and it warms up prepare to water anywhere from 4 to 6 times (when possible). Thanks for the order. 😊

Wow Mike that is both impressive and testament to the hard work you put in. I'm genuinely so pleased 😊😊😊😊
I reseeded my lawn 1 week ago following your advice fingers crossed 🤞 lol but thanks for the tips and tricks keep up the good work 👏
Good luck!

Nice work and good advice 👍👍👍👍👍☘️☘️☘️☘️
Thanks 👍👍😊😊
I bloody well hope you can as I just did my back lawn this weekend just gone :D
😁😁
The warmest spring on record in fact but the wettest since 1986 I think they said.
Sod giving these private water companies more money. I'll be waiting for September.

The end is nigh! 😩
Thanks Shaun. So when temp falls but growing season is still with us? Great thanks.
Yes that's it.. As we want 6 weeks after it's done to allow for it to recover
Legend!
Top man 😎👍👌👌
eventually got my last scarification done on Saturday it was still damp 😏
Wahay 😊😊 top man
Allet recently said "scarify every other week in the mowing season and you will see the benefits". I don't know what to believe 🤷🏻
I can kind of relate if they meant to use their grooming cartridge to groom (or verticut) which is like th lightest of light gentle scariifers ever
@@LawnRight nice one, thanks. It was their rake attachment in fairness so less aggressive
According to the climate change zealots it was the hottest may on record.
Yes, I know.....madness
😮😮. Doesn't surprise me.. Perhaps summer is now over too.. Had leaves blowing off a tree the other day.. Autumn I'm telling ya its autumn 🤣

I guess this is where sprinklers come into play?
Yeah 😊😊👍👍
When do you start again in late August?
As soon a sit just starts dropping cooler yes
Hi will this be okay to do on a lawn full of moss and dandilions
Hi yes sure will.. Just thin out the moss for now.. If you go really heavy you'll increase chances of needing to seed an it's getting less and less favourable conditions now
The media would have you believing May was a heatwave 😄
Hottest May on record ever since records began.
🤣🤣. Hmm lol
🤔😄
Watering 4-6 times a day if overseedimg and scarifying in summer! Not possible for 99.9% people
@@Khayyam676 that's why I generally advise avoiding summer.. Or another option is a timer or an irrigation system
How is the best way to water? Use hose, sprinkler, or another way?

Hi once it's all come through you should be OK to taper down to just a few times a week.. Usually tho..

Hi Shaun. Thanks for info. Mid May is ideal time to scarify. What's the ideal time at the end of the season? Cheers.

That or worms.. Because the lawns dead they see this as a chance that grubs have caused the lawn to die ie going brown
Funny that as I've had 3 starlings appear from nowhere and regularly peck at my lawn. I don't mind if they keep the pests away!
