ONLY IN JAPAN: Napple Tale's Magical Daydream Music
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2024
- Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream, released in Japan for the Dreamcast in 2000, has one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard. A gorgeous, one-of-a-kind approach to harmony is woven throughout idiosyncratic forms and structures to take you into a new, magical world that manages to feel unfamiliar without being uninviting. How did the great Yoko Kanno do it? Let's find out!

I think I speak for all of us when I say that we really appreciate the quality videos that this channel continues to provide. Thank you so much 8-bit Music Theory!
This game actually got a fan translation a few years ago! There's music you can only here in game not all of it was released and not all of it was even ripped digitally from the game. I couldnt find the song 'home' anywhere.
I fell in love with the art and music of the game. I hope more people do too! Folly Fall has to be my favourite song
Daaang, I hope someone does a full RIP at some point. Or better, Yoko Kanno or Sega release the originals in another album.
@@PiercingSight there is a clean one on KHInsider !
@@Sytarie wow thank you so much for introducing me to that website
@@brazilnut3739 zophar's domain is another one you need to check out. This site only hosts in-gamerips, but if a game is listed on there you can be sure that it will have every snippet of music that is hiding within that game's files ready to be downloaded or streamed directly (and even in its original file format!). If you just want to listen it also has everything in mp3 and/or flac.
@@brazilnut3739 The big advantages of having your videogame music in its original format is for one: the possibility to perfectly loop the music if the loop data is embedded in the file; and the second big advantage is the filesize. You have a perfect copy of the ingame music and it's in all cases many times smaller than its respective FLAC file.
You just need a player that can play these (or for older sequence based systems like SNES, GBA, N64, some PS1, etc., you need a player that interprets and accurately reproduces these). There are videogame music players supporting a big chunk of all formats.
I don't know what the odds are, but I started playing this game this week (it has received one of the best fantranslations in existence) simply because of Yoko Kanno's presence for the OST and you just uploaded a video about it... A game that I was sure nobody would ever talk about (a shame, as it's actually damn good).
I just finished it as well and if anyone is wondering, you should give it a try, it isn't anything MIND BLOWING but it is a very unique game. Can't say I have played anything that feels like it
I love that E13 chord in the Napoleon Town Theme so beautiful
that chord specifically is stuck in my head
This sounds like a mix of early 20th century French classical music (Ravel, Debussy, Satie) with a little bit of Frank Zappa as well. I like it.
and Poulenc!
✨parallelism✨
@@Sayeedur123hell yea! Not many people mention Poulenc
Thanks for this. Napple Tales soundtrack is what first introduced me to Yoko Kanno as a composer years ago, and I have been hooked ever since
For me it was Ghost in the Shell. Love her music
@@desu38 My introduction to her was Cowboy Bebop, which was basically just an excuse for her to show off her jazz composition chops. It still blows my mind a little that she's so good at composing things other than jazz *on top* of being one of the best jazz composers to ever compose jazz.
Oh wow, I don't think I've ever heard anyone else bring up Napple Tale before. Soundtrack has always made for some good background listening for me
This is phenomenal. I would have never been exposed to this had you not chosent it. Thank you for a fantasticaly interesting and musically pleasing choice. ^_^
Kanno has such a lovely impressionist sound
Wow, I wasn't expecting to wake up today and see a music theory analysis of that weird obscure Dreamcast platformer I tried out once. Bizarre but dope.

I'm so happy to see this game covered by your channel. It's one of my all time favorites and it deserves more exposure. Everything Yoko Kanno does is magical
finally covering kanno's work!! she's my favourite composer and I absolutely adore all of her music, thank you for this video
Wonderful analysis! Your enthusiasm about sharing cool things you've found really shines through everything you make - it gives me the same inspirational feelings as lectures from my best college professors!
Your videos are a gift to all future composers. If I ever get big, I'll cite you as one of my main teachers, even if you we've never met.
Big Yoko Kanno, Napple Tale ost is seriously underrated and absolutely lit! glad yourd covering it
"Slow Water" sincerely has such amazing composition, it wouldn't be out of place at a symphony performance for more eclectic music in the slightest. The structure and buildup that leads up to the strings playing the bass makes for such a beautiful transition.
Great topic and analysis but I am stunned one could make any video, let alone a music video, on Napple Tale without including its signature track "Wild Wind" 😮 I am gonna guess it’s in the Bonus Bits video of the Patreon.
for those who don't know, this game has been mostly made by women (only some translation/thingy for the dreamcast). it is a very unique game.
My goodness, this soundtrack is so incredibly up my alley, and I never knew. Thank you for introducing me to this, it's wonderful.
I started playing this game a week ago simply because I have not come into contact with Kanno's music (like at all) until that point and I wanted to change that. She is known as one of the most famous composers of the industry and I have been curious for a long time why that is (apart from the fact she did Cowboy Bebop's OST). Hearing every track of this game for the very first time and in context is absolutely magical. You seriously have to check out more of her works (and I need to do as well, so far this is the only one I've heard).
“Skipper” has some Zappa feeling to it. It’s like a less…grungy?…Dog Breath Variarions, especially the recording Eugene Corporon did of it.
the part with the base note "twist" is... just... wow. like, it's like the kind of twist you see in a story that just change EVERYTHING in the media piece you watch... but in music.
Really great vid - hey I’ve been a fan for many years, happy new year by the way!!!🎉
I dont understand most of this but the music is beautiful
I love the track 'Dreams in a Pie'. It's a fairly simple pop-like song with whimsical lyrics and its so beautifully arranged with lush instrumentation and great build-ups. I've never played the game but looking at this footage it seems to fit the Alice in Wonderland style perfectly
your intro literally always gives me the feeling of being caught sleeping while at school/work or something lol
As an occasional viewer of this channel. I’m so happy to be subscribed and see when videos like this that I _adore_ pop up! So many treasures in these 20 minutes ☀️
Thank you so much for introducing us to this music!
Your analyses regarding "non-functional" harmony has been extremely influential in my music making.
Please keep it up!
There's so much of the music that sounds like Ravel - what an amazing soundtrack!
What a lovely soundtrack, I'm really glad I was able to be made aware of this one through your coverage! I'm hoping to see more of videos like these, this is awesome.
Only in Japan can games sound so dreamlike and foreign at the same time.
Somebody discovering this score is always a joy to see. It's one of her best, and that's saying a lot. The albums are Illustrated Guide to the Monsters and Illustrated Guide to the Faeries, and both are worth multiple listenings.
4:58 in the 3rd measure, i think the second clarinet note is actually an A and not a B flat. Also, I dont hear any A flat around 5:12 , only an E
I love this game! Played this last year and it's one of my favorites I've played in a long time. Thanks a bunch for making this video, I really hope it gives this game some more exposure.
Rain Waltz is my favorite track. Probably.
Also Game Dude would love this for its magical dreamlike atmosphere.
Awesome video! Have you ever checked out some of Kanno's earlier game work on the Nobunaga's Ambition series? It's got some impressive pieces!
Slow rater seems like Ravel's prelude ! (tombeau de couperin)
Thank you! This was driving me crazy!
She's known for occasionally blueprinting ideas and then throwing her own toppings on. Unfortunally, she's also known for this backfiring a couple times and her toppings not being enough to dodge copyright issues.
Man, this score sounds freaking amazing Thank you for introducing me! Blown away!
That was some inspirational composition. Makes me feel like I should be more creative.
Excellent music and analysis. Happy New Year!
This game is in the zeitgeist! I have been a Dreamcast enthusiast for years and have been working on an indie title for the platform, but only found out about this game a month ago and it seems to be popping up everywhere :D The music is phenomenal, and while the deeper music theory goes over my head it's cool to see how much jazz influence is underneath it. Was delighted to see this in my notifications :)
Not a game I'd have expected to see on this channel. I actually have had the OSTs on CD since they came out and bought the game back in the day too (suffice it to say I was estatic when the fan translation happened). Shame you didn't cover Wild Wind, which is one of my absolute favorite pieces of all time.
Several tracks (especially with the extended stacked-3rd chords) remind me quite suddenly and particularly of Ravel! Very pretty
Never heard of it, and am so glad you showcased it because it’s stunning.
"yoko kano"
huh, never heard of her
*tank stings*
ah, got it.
Great concept for a new show
Really good idea for a series! Great entry
Fascinating insights! That's some awesome music that I'd have never heard otherwise.
This is seriously so cool. Thanks for introducing me to it.
I was pretty stunned when I first learned about this game. The gameplay seemed very uninteresting to me, but the soundtrack was stunning. What is it with obscure Japanese games having fantastic music? Freaking Ar Tonelico and Ar Nosurge is another case of that, and even more amazing one at that.
this game indeed has some fantastic writing - got to love that woman!
Love your channel. I like video games. I _LOVE_ video game music. I grew up picking out Proto Man's whistle from Mega Man 3 on the piano, plugging in my Gameboy's headphone jack into the aux port of my boombox to revel in the incredible stereo music. Sitting on the title screen of Final Fantasy Legend, or repeatedly listening to the Ballad of the Wind Fish in Link's Awakening.
It's great seeing the appreciation and analysis of this art.
I'm so glad a fan translation of this game exists. I got a modded Dreamcast with a GDEMU in 2021 and found out about this game last year. I haven't finished it yet but I'm gonna. Everything about this game is just so nice.
Nice hidden gem of the video game world. Thanks for uploading and analyzing!
It's a mix of neoromantic/impressionistic orchestration and minimalistic writing and form.
2:54 "Film Soundtrack" with the game's tone in mind would be one way, I think
Napple Tale truly is a wonderful game
fucking sat up excitedly when this popped up on my feed. channel i like doing musical analysis of my absolute favorite game soundtrack, thats got me through a lot of rough spots over the past decade and a half? yes please.
also, there's a fan translation as of semi recently and really its a delightful game, warts and all.
what a cool looking and sounding game! and what a cool idea for a series
I am SHOCKED to see Napple Tale in my subscriptions! This game is a big favorite of mine, a delightful game in general, with a truest GORGEOUS soundtrack!!
Should absolutely be more well known!!
Sorry this video isn't exactly "doing numbers", but I will say that yes, this is one of the most beautiful listening experiences. Thanks for sharing it with me
18:00 lmfao what a mood
I've never heard of this game.. but oh my that soundtrack is amazing! Will be checking it out for sure
The track "Delightful Arithmetic" reminds me of something in The Producers - maybe the intro to That Face, or Til Him?
I probably would've loved this game when I was 13-14.
When we gunna get an Ori and The Blind Forest analysis? What a wonderful soundtrack
wow this is fantastic
Game has Maaya Sakamoto in it, so it's a winner
And 6-7 years later, and sorry (no, NOT sorry) Cowboy Bebop fans, Yoko Kanno would release the OST for "Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex" (both seasons); to my ears, the best OST for an anime ever made when I discovered it 10 years ago, and it still is today (Violet Evergarden came close to snatch this title from my ears though -- but not quite).
would love to watch a full in depth beginner's music theory course by you so i can understand what you're talking about.
This soundtrack is incredible, holy crap
Ignoring the compositional level, I'm just blown away by how it sounds. This came out in 2000, and it looks like a late-era PS1 game, but the soundtrack sounds like it was all recorded with real instruments. The piano could be synthesized (although the expressive phrasing in "Delightful Arithmetic" is hard to program), but I haven't heard string and brass samples that good in a game prior to the late 2000s, and I have never heard woodwind samples that good. Due to Occam's Razor, the most logical conclusion is that Sega gave Yoko Kanno the budget for a real ensemble for a game in 2000 that was never released outside of Japan. Just mind-blowing.
The music was recorded with a real orchestra in Italy. It’s not that uncommon for CD-ROM games of the 90s to have used real instruments and orchestras as it was one of the selling points of the CD format (or well, here, the GD-ROM format) compared to cartridges.
@@chazmaru9583 in Italy? Really?? I never knew that! Do you know which orchestra or studio?

@@chazmaru9583 thank you for the info! It's amazing to think that this was recorded in my country, or at least part of it. I'm gonna do some research to see if the studio and the owners are still in business
@@chazmaru9583
Huh, I'm looking up games on Sega consoles and it seems you are right. Interesting that the perceived dominance of the N64 and PS1 affected our perception of videogame music so much.
Yoko Kanno is a beast
Oh hell yeah Napple Tale
I appreciate that this little mini-series is called ONLY IN JAPAN because, while it refers to where you could play the game, I feel like it also refers to where you can hear music like this. Japanese composers using "Western" composition techniques just hits different.
Wow I love this music, yoko kano is the greatest
wowowow youre amazing
Fantastico!
This is fantastic and I've never heard of this game, but now I'll have to figure out some way to play it.
This game received one of the most impressive fantranslations that I have ever seen. Emulating is always a possibility.
where has this music been all my life???
Unbelievable music ❤
I did a double take when I heard the composer was Yoko Kanno. No wonder!
SEE YA AT MAGFEST!
Hey man, I’m a long time musician and follower of your channel. Maybe I’ve missed it, but you should look into some of Austin Wise’s stuff. In particular Donkey Kong country tropical freeze features some incredible tracks, and DKC2 has some fantastic pieces too.
Although while we’re on Japan, Sin from genesis is a banger, and while we’re on cowboy bebop, space lion is a banger. Thus spoke brooks is a track from Catherine that is also super jazzy.
Also to tack even more onto this comment, wondered if you’ve listened to any of insaneintherains stuff. His sinnoh track features incredible use of clarinet in particular.
Have you listened to the Balan Wonderworld soundtrack? Although the game has some major issues with its gameplay, the music is very well composed. Take a listen, and if you like it, can you do an analysis?
Japan music is sooo good 🤤I laughed so hard when Tank! came out of no where 😂😂 8 bit, please do an analysis on Howl’s Moving Castle, that would be so amazing!
napples napples napples napples napples
: Jesus, I only discovered this OST yesterday and already I'm demanding a civil suit be brought against the West for keeping it from me. Slow Water reminds me of what The Smile are doing right now, and I can only imagine Jonny Greenwood knows exactly how to flesh out Thom Yorke's ideas so that they sound like Yoko Kanno's.
Threads of Fate also deserves a similar video, it's not very well known, but the music is unique
Man, this is so incredibly beautiful. Thanks for drawing attention to it!
Do you transcribe this music yourself? If so, do you post the sheet music anywhere? This is too good, I really want to teach myself how to play a lot of it on my geetar. I'm not really familiar with whole tone scales, and this just sounds *gorgeous* to my ears. Yoko Kanno is brilliant, thank you for making me aware of this score.
This is right up my alley. I wish you did Dreams in a Pie. I have a transcription up on my channel. What key do you think the chorus is actually in? It's such a good soundtrack.
Sonic CD’s original original soundtrack would be a cool Only In Japan episode but I don’t think it would count since we eventually got it with the rerelease
15:02 teen town jumpscare
This video feels like it has a lot of meat compared to some others. Super neat
holy cow Slow Water is gooooorgeous
18:30 is that _the riff???_
Some of these songs, especially the last one discussed, sounds similar to Frank Zappa’s Burnt Weeny Sandwich.
I can't believe that we didn't get an anaylsis of Dove Clock, the best song on the soundtrack! /s
I feel like a mother 3 episode is almost inevitable. I hope so, at least.
omg PLEASE do something from mother 3 that would be amazing !!!!
Okay, what the heck!? I wasn't expecting to have a new favorite video game soundtrack today. This is GORGEOUS!!
Time to go download the whole thing~
UPDATE: My favorite piece from the soundtrack is Green Wings. It's just so beautiful ;-;
