Great review and love the honest take on the issues with this. I’ve been on the fence on this for awhile especially because of the battery life and “sleep” state. Keep up the great work on your videos!
I agree with most of what you said. I sent mine in for a motherboard swap to resolve the sd issue. They broke it and I demanded an upgrade to the X. The Ally X is AMAZING
Great video. I agree that the battery life is the Ally’s weak point. But I purchased a anker battery pack that can match the Ally’s draw at Turbo to extend battery life. Not a big deal with a 6ft cable attached. Especially on those longer flights.
Try the kill switch case, helps with the sharp edges. Have about a year with mine at this point and don’t touch my Xbox or ps5 anymore. New dad so definitely love that I can game while my little man is sleeping on my lap comfortably. Got the Z1 extreme but just upgraded to the X and honestly no regrets. The battery life is next level.
Loved my time with the OG ally. Only complaint was the down button would stick. Now I’m using its big brother the X, and it’s a worthy upgrade. It’s way more premium and noticeable plays AAA titles better, graphics ,battery , dpad & economics are greatly improved.
Honestly the only thing that I favor in the steam deck over my ROG ally right now is the wake sleep functions it is so much slower on the ally than on my steam deck press power it boots right into the game on the ally I press power and I have to wait for it to unhiberate show the boot logo ask me for my fingerprint and then sometimes the game doesn't activate my control drivers properly so none of my gyro functions work other than that I love both devices I can't wait to see what the next generation of these devices will be like cause this is pushing me away from couch and TV gaming on console to mobily playing and remote playing my consoles from these devices
I am happy to hear that you are enjoying the newer version so much! I am so glad ASUS really made the changes they did. It makes the Ally a much better handheld
@@str8poisintv131 yeah that’s a pretty cool function, but you know you can installs bazite if you really wanted it. Same idea as running steam OS on your ally. Have seem people dual booting it and having the best of both worlds, I’m considered doing that myself, I’m gonna buy a 4 TB someday and split it evenly between both operating systems.
graphics? its the same chip...i have honestly not heard anyone say the graphics were better...because how could they be if theres no difference in gpu or cpu?
Thank you so much for your review on this device it's helped me decide to go with the steam deck. I honestly just dislike the windows crashing, and you might end up having to reset your entire device and lose your storage. I had to do this with my custom pc.
lol Honestly I've had mine for a few months now have no issues And I have a steam **** no issues I think a lot of the windows being trash narrative is just people's pockets being padded honestly I've been using windows my whole life it's never been an issue now even on a handheld with my big fingers and a touch screen never was an issue trust me the ally is way stronger than the steam deck the steam deck is slightly more convenient because I can just turn it on and turn it off whereas the ally I had to set up hibernate mode but overall both devices are fire don't get caught up in the content creator Mumbo Jumbo you can probably get one try it out for a few days and then take it back for return
The swap out of ssd though is really pretty easy. I only just got mine but almost immediately swapped in a 2Tb ssd. Much nicer. Battery life still sucks though.
2280 SSDs are cheaper than SD cards for any given capacity, and are faster. I never had a need for the SD card reader when 2TB SSDs can be had for $100 or less.
It is worth playing with power profiles, I set it manually and play with the watts, also turn off cpu boost in armory crate. However yeah if you can get the x with the double battery life it's probably worth doing :) Also you get that extra ram.
That is a great choice! Definitely what I would recommend for anyone looking to purchase a current Windows handheld. As long as you have games to play, it will be the perfect upgrade!
@@anthonyharrison8567 to be honest, the switch is probably the only system worth having alongside the ally, because most console games you can get on PC besides Nintendo unless you’re trying to emulate and in that case you can play anything on the handheld PC lol
Yes! The screen is phenomenal for a LCD! I did see some very positive reviews about installing bazzite and did consider doing that to mine. However, for Linux gaming, I just want to stick with the Steam Deck. However, if I didn't own a Steam Deck, that is definitely what I would do.
I hear a lot of talk about Bazzi and I'm intrigued but I already own a steamed deck and the ROG ally and I use them both differently as much as I would love to try bazite on a more powerful handheld I just can't justify the headache of formatting and loading up another OS the ROG Ally was a headache to set up because it took so long I can't imagine doing that again especially since I've done drive swaps three times with multiple is it really worth ditching windows to go strictly bazzite?
I own all platforms, but currently I mainly play on PC and Xbox Series X. I still play on PlayStation and Nintendo but I do spend more time with Xbox at the moment.
Thank you! I do not have any experience with the MSI Claw so I can't speak on it, but I am glad the other companies are competing in the handheld market. Hopefully it leads to better and more affordable Allys and Claws in the future 😀

I don’t think I could comfortably use the ROG Ally over my Steam Deck OLED. I’d miss those irreplaceable trackpads too much. And if I did get one, I’d be scrubbing Windows and installing Linux on it. Been gaming on Linux for 15 years, now, and I simply don’t trust Microsoft enough with my personal data or my security. Thanks for the great longtime user review, though!
@@riomendoza1111 Correct. The Steam Deck is much more efficient, lasts longer, has better controls and is built better. You’re right; it’s not even close.
