1.Much more fluid than kh1s combat.
    2. Sora has a lot more acrobatics which makes the gameplay more flashy and interesting whilst still maintaining the simple aspect of kh which allows anyone to pick up and play.
    3. You have more options, you can go to ham with physical attacks but magic and summons are also there if you choose to use them, limits also become an option and you get a variety of powerups with the drive forms. The reaction commands also make the combat feel and look more interesting which is a natural evolution of kingdom hearts combat.
    4. You get special limits with the characters from each of the worlds you go to encouraging you to actually use the disney partners as opposed to keeping only donald and goofy with you for the drive forms.

Only thing I would ever change about KH2’s combat would be having penalties for mashing triangle. I’m *not* saying that *every reaction command* should have penalties or punishments, but I feel like for most if not all bosses should have penalties. The reaction commands could pretty much destroy bosses so a penalty could make fighting them much more reflex and focused based.
If they do bring reaction commands back for KH3, this would only be my only wish.

Maybe they can change this, so that you have a choice if you want to use it or not

I really dont get why people think this. Reaction commands are pretty balanced overall. Theres only a few that stand out to me. Mainly bat cry, rising sun, and sparkle ray. The former being just as easy to whiff with and get punished as it Is to sweep rooms with, and the latter two being implemented for the benefit of the 1000 heartless battle. As for bosses? None of them are particularly op, and often serve as a cinematic transitions rather than anything else.

I agree. I have found that spamming triangle breaks reaction commands. Maybe they could've made it that all reaction commands (or some at least) have some sort of timing that if you click too early maybe you'll deal horrible damage or even get damaged yourself, and to maximize the damage, you have to time you clicks correctly

I have to agree with you on that. KH2 give us the most satisfying combat system in the series. I really like how they build the command system while adding so much movement to Sora. He can double jump, roll, quick step, glide and while doing all that, you can perform awesome combos with the keyblade, together with magics, summons, limits, drive forms.
Reaction commands tend to favor the player in a lot of difficult situations, but they also have penalty if you hit the button in the wrong time, which is fine by me too, since they look cool in the most part.
I'm just glad that KH3 is given most of KH2 features with a few new additions, like ShotLock from BBS or flow motion from DDD. Sora's movements flow naturally and are quick, like in KH2. That's what i like in a action game.

I have a theory: those "clickbaiters" probably end up like that because they don't have much going on besides Kingdom Hearts (HMK had Zelda, but that is about to slow down since BotW seems to be done with its DLCs), so to keep their channels alive, they must "find" stuff to talk about (out of thin air basically), stretch out videos thing, etc.
I haven't profiled ArcaneReviews' channel yet (I might do it soon though) but from the looks of it, he's not the type to get stuck into a single franchise, which prevents him from developing that sort of annoying trait.

I think the most reason a lot of gamers including myself didn't really give a second thought on the difficulty setting was because the difficulty setting didn't change the enemies much aside from how much damage they would deal. I was kind of hoping for something along the lines of Mega Man Powered Up, where the enemies attack pattern would change, like shooting extra projectiles, avoid attacks better, and even gain new desperation moves on the hardest difficulty setting. Sometimes simply enhancing the attack power and defense can work, but at other times it feels like fake difficulty.
Although on the subject of challenge, you want a good challenge? Try playing the game with the combo abilities turned off, and just the standard 3 hit combo. I have yet to see anybody do this challenge.

    • @ArcaneKeyblade
      @ArcaneKeyblade  8 років тому +4

While i feel alot of the times when the only thing that is changed in difficulties is the enemies doing more damage its boring, I think for KH2FM the critical setting actually asked and gave you the need for the use of the other abilites that the game gave you which changed the game up alot, while before it was easier and those abilites weren't needed. So even if not as much enemy wise was changed, I still think it changed up gameplay in a very positive way.

Forgot how they are called, but you change your fighting Style depending on the abilitys you use in combat. Also, funnily enough, during those transformations, most animations are smoothly transitioning from one attack into another. Just wanted to point that out =)
Same also goes for DDD, at least for Riku! He can change styles too and his animations become smooth as well!

Personally also think that KH2 (particularly KH2FM) has some of the best combat out of the series. Out of all the other games besides for KH1 it has no "floatiness" involved in the movement and combat (if you dont know what floatiness is there are plenty of videos that explain it well but basically you hang in the air for extended moments and it makes you more vulnerable, especially in Critical mode)
I also think that the Critical Mode in 2FM is the best, it does a great balance between challenging you at higher difficulties while also rewarding you with early abilities that you absolutely need to stay alive. It also makes you hit harder instead of doing chip damage which gives the illusion of difficulty and is annoying to deal with generally (KH DDD was bad with this), and Critical mode opens up a whole new dynamic to the game involving strategy, planning and skill that otherwise arent needed on standard and proud mode
Okay end rant, love this game so much and enjoying KH3 as well

Well... I did play 0.2, and it for the most part may end up having the closest battle system to the original KH II battle system, which is why I am excited for III so damn much, if they fix how floaty it can feel at times, III could very well be the next best KH, so far nothing has come close to II other than 358/2 Days(for me) because it felt so close to original KH on a handheld, and I loved the diverse characters you could play as, and it's so much better with friends. So here is to hoping III knocks it out of the ballpark!

I feel like kh2 combat is the best purely because you could change what you wanted your combat to be based on how long you “mashed buttons”, because you could attack a few times, cast fire for a combo finisher, finishing plus extends the combo allowing you to hit square and launch the enemy for aerial attacks ending with a drive form transformation to counter the revenge attack damage followed by more combos made up of different moves and varying levels of magic power
Sure kh3 does this fine, but so many of the bosses on critical don’t let you fight them properly and it just comes of as more tedious than challenging, whereas kh2 allows you to play to the full extent of your own power, and that’s the problem with tediously difficult boss fights in kh3, you feel limited in how you can approach the boss, this isn’t difficulty, this is trial and error, even dark souls understands this logic of combat that every boss must be compatible with every kind of player exposing vulnerable weak phases accordingly, the yozora fight needs you to remember that one move you have for that one punish you do lest you die that’s not difficulty, that’s fixation on player limitation.
you shouldn’t limit the player, but provide an equal footing where the boss has an advantage they can use, that doesn’t result in instant death, like kh2 siax, he has great strength, but also a chance to take control that doesn’t require you to play life or death yakuza mahjong with every move you make, the difficulty in kh2 is based solely on heal and mp management, and recovering at the right time to not break your second chance or once more, kh3 you also have to not touch walls for any reason, but also hug them to dodge blasts and heal as your only magic move, as it’s not need in your 2 hit punish
TLDR: tedious, is bad, making the player use the mechanics you gave them to beat your fight through player choice and good mechanical skill of the game, is good

    • @TheSCPStudio
      @TheSCPStudio 2 роки тому +1

God damn do you have that backwards lol. KH2 literally has revenge values. Forcing you to play a certain way. You have reflect as your only real block mechanic and it's just the same thing essentially every fight. Block, attack. Dodge, attack. Reaction command. Repeat.
KH3 forces you to learn the boss and learn how to manage your abilities and such for the right times. Not only that but there are SO many ways to approach a battle in Kh3, no idea where you got this "trial and error" and "one way" bullshit from.

KH2 is among my top 5 (maybe even top 3) favorite games for a reason. It was my favorite PS2 game at the time and Final Mix is a vast improvement over the original version and that's because of the Critical Mode. It has one of the tightest combat systems I've touched upon and Critical Mode gives all of your abilities at your disposal to test yourself to your full potential. It was never a dull moment for me. The game barely has any filler or slows me down to a hault. Even the weakest Disney world, which is practically a quick-time rhytm game, doesn't drag you down and it's over fairly quickly. I love KH1, but I have to admit, there are some levels that break the pacing to a hault and are a drag to go through. I never liked the Atlantica level personally. KH2 is definitely a game within the series that I'd be happy to go back to every time. It's definitely the game where Nomura was at his peak in my opinion.

  • @TheUnseenPath
    @TheUnseenPath 4 роки тому +1

The thing is turning to critical mode for more doesn't help the combat since you can do that for any game to increase challenge. Whereas KH1 I had difficulty even caught up in level with some of the heartless alone, let alone the bosses. I had to grind because it was an RPG and I liked that.
With KH2 it is fair to say press X then ▲ to win. I didn't care for it. All the flashy crazy combos made it sort of boring for me. In KH1 they were just right, IMO. Not too crazy but enough to make sense and come off as cool. I mostly performed combos but I didn't always rely on them. I actually needed magic in KH1 I didn't in KH2 the combos sufficed.
In KH1 I needed aero for damage mitigation, cure for healing, thunder and gravity for aoe, and time stop for CC. Fire and blizzard were great for killing the tiny floating color coated heartless plus magic was also incorporated in boss battles in KH1 which I loved. It made it so you have to use all your resources and playing an RPG I feel like if I don't use magic at all it's a waste. A balance of both is needed and I got that in KH1.
I feel like Square Enix saw that players used combos more so they made KH2 more combo oriented and revamped the battle system. To me that's the equivalent of Ion Hazzikostas saying "players are pushing fewer buttons so they must not need them or they must be pushing a button a lot so it must be very useful", or even the classic "if they're doing it a lot they must be enjoying it." Dream Drop Distance to me is what KH2 could have been (minus the command deck) if they polished the combat up. Notice in DDD the characters fight like KH1 but more tighter and a fixed camera? That would have been better. Also keep platforming that really made the game feel alive.
I feel like a bunch of little things, like me actually needing and using my summons in KH1 v KH2 where I didn't need them, made the first game feel alive. It was an RPG whereas the games after it became less and less like that even KH2. It's the same issue with World of Warcraft all the RPG elements were taken out so the game is a shell of its former self. I say if they kept the battle system (and story, and atmosphere) like KH1 but polished it up and maybe made a few tweaks it'd be my favorite RPG series hands down. The combat in KH1 was simple and clean which is what I loved about it and the story in KH1: simple. Complex in its simplicity and as the old adage goes "if it isn't broken don't fix it." They didn't need to fix combat by revamping it just tune it up...Oh well...Cie' la vie.

One main thing I'll point out is the meaning of pointing out why Critical mode is important for KH2 is that it makes it difficult to the point of needing to use the full potential of the mechanics in the game, whereas the other difficulties were to easy and you could just press x and triangle to win. In Critical it is much more difficult to do that, so my point for KH2 is when at its best and highest potential in needing to use it's mechanics fully that is where the combat truly shines.

@@ArcaneKeyblade That's fine. I don'rt feel KH2 is a bad game, just a bad sequel. It is a Disney/Square sequel after all. I had fun with it but I enjoy combat in pt.1 more. @@TheUnseenPath I meeeeaan honestly if you're gonna get into the series you have to deal with alot of retcon especially with everything past KH2 because the story wasn't planned from the beginning. • @TheUnseenPath
      @TheUnseenPath 4 роки тому

@@ArcaneKeyblade Well, retconing is different from revamping the game.
You're right I don't think they were expecting the game to be successful but then why make a "hidden movie" if that's the case?
I dealt with it, played KH1-3 and wiki'd the rest. I understand the story it's just dumb.
I'm not going into CoM because it's not the original. There was no mention outside of say one Ansem report that talks about the nobodies.
And even then it's like who cares? They didn't show them physically and according to KH2 when a heart leaves a body the heartless and nobody are created at the same time...so where were they in KH1? Could have gone a different route.
The dialogue in KH3 is terrible with the characters stating the obvious. "Hey Sora use the gigas to fight the toys" no Goofy you do it. Show some autonomy instead of relying on Sora. It's the Sora show. (KH3 was not a bad game it was just weak in some areas.)
The more common something is the less rare it is. Everyone has a Keyblade now so it is not special. It used to be a semi sentient item that chose you not the other way around.
In KH1 Leon says "Why would THE Keyblade choose you?" he did not say "Why would A Keyblade choose you?" implying that there has always been one keyblade and why seeing Riku and Mickey with one in KH1 was a total mind fuck.
Simple is better and it can be complex in its simplicity. Ansem was the villain and made his plan clear...this...idk what this is.

I just recently finished KHIIFM on Critical Mode as I had heard the combat in it was more strategic. While that was definitely true in some instances, like I was bodied by standard baddies in a few places--always to my shock--and there were certainly bosses that required some strategy and learning their patterns (i.e. Roxas, Sephiroth, Absent Silhouettes), I still found the combat to be repetitive. Don't get me wrong, I strongly prefer KHII's combat to KHI, especially with the addition of Reaction Commands and Forms, but when I had heard Critical Mode was more difficult, I really was expecting something along the lines of Dark Souls difficulty--tough, but fair. Instead, there were still plenty of times where button mashing got me out of a sticky situation, and the revenge strikes of bosses were never so taxing that I bothered to count my swings, which meant these moves still came off cheap as hell and easily countered by either Reflect or a heal. So, I wouldn't say Critical Mode is that difficult.

Thing is, coming in while already knowing how the flow of battles go gives you a massive handicap over players who are playing the game for the first time in Critical mode. Sad to say, but if you play it once, you won't be able to feel the "strategic" factor behind learning fights on-the-spot that will kill you relentlessly until you can keep up with the pace of the game.

100% agree, great video. the data battles, intensely annoying, but still so memorable and accomplished feeling. if anything make the entire game have complex bosses and portions throughout, make it a HARD game, and if you want players to feel better, (things like how king mickey shows up) or even a learning portion, each time you die it helps guide you slightly. on normal/ non hardest difficulty. or just after like 50-100 deaths have the game give mercy pointers (opportunity, deniable of coarse like how mickey is). great game i hope KH3 sets the bar sooo much higher just like kh2 did to kh1 with drive forms, growth abilities( one of my favorite if not the best part of the game for me) growth throughout is what makes rpg games feel so bad ass. constantly building, i think the one thing that kh2 can grow on is reaction commands, only triangle? i know other buttons have priority for other things, idk theres just room for creativity there, especially when it comes to increasing difficulty levels. i think god of war would be a good example to take ideas from, and for growth, jak and daxter 2, loved the growth of the guns there, i honestly even hope some how they give sora the ability to use all of the org13's weapons, individually ie like how in god of war it changes the game play somewhat, just would be a cool twist to go off of instead of just the key blades as much as i love them, its kh3, why not go all out. i hope they make this game as groundbreaking and as satisfying as possible! i dont have if i have to dump 500-1000 hours to complete. as opposed to 120/150 hours average for kh2(gummie ships and just simply fuckery that happened there lol.)

    One more thing
    YES! FORMS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!
And i actually did some research
Shadow Sora is actually a form that happens at random (I know you know this)
    BUT
The chances of it happening DEPENDS on what forms you've used recently
If you use any form except Shadow and Final form, your odds of becoming Shadow Sora increase
It's vice versa with Shadow and Final (so you don't get stuck in a never ending loop of being shadow sora over and over again, although apparently that didn't stop me from getting it 3 times in a row, why Rngesus?)
Final must be the light in Sora's heart if Shadow is the dark, Especially if Final stops you from becoming Shadow
And all of this over like 5 forms, i fucking love this logic man

I personally disagree with you, but I understand and respect your opinion.
I didn't like the reaction commands because there was no penalty for mindlessly mashing Triangle before the prompt appears. While I see how you would find them cool, I think that the developers were trying way too hard to make them look epic, but that's just me. I think that Kingdom Hearts has the best combat in the series personally, with my least favorite being Days.
In this video, you brought up how Keyblades in 2 have weight to them. While I definitely won't disagree, Kingdom Hearts did it a bit better in my opinion. For example, it was very unlikely that you could counterattack (ability) with lighter, shorter Keyblades, yet bigger Keyblades had the risk of hitting a part of the environment causing you to temporarily bounce back. Kingdom Hearts 2 doesn't really do this, and while it does make combat a tad bit smoother, it requires less precision which makes it a bit less interesting for me.
I also found Summons more useful, and your partners could actually help harm the enemy. Compare this to 2, where Donald and Goofy are practically tools for Sora to use at his disposal.
This video was well made, and I like how you actually went in detail about KH2's combat, as almost nobody does (only ones that come to mind are MieDax and Frustrated Jacob). I also appreciate how you didn't resort to completely insulting the other games in comparison to 2, like some people would. Good work making a mature Kingdom Hearts video.

    • @ArcaneKeyblade
      @ArcaneKeyblade  7 років тому +8

I'm glad you enjoyed! And I can see where your coming from with your points with KH1, but to me the notion of having to be precise isn't inherently a good thing to me if anything it can be more frustrating than a challenge. It's not like an Fps to which the aiming has to be done by myself, in these games you still need to take in the distance for an attack, but the problem is rather than making what I am fighting the challenge it makes using the combat more of the challenge. I want to focus on the enemy and the attacks it's doing and that I'm going to do rather than worrying about whether my hit will make contact or not because the accuracy of the combat is off or the camera is off. And I feel having weight is good to have in this combat but it's one thing to have weight to combat that makes it feel more fluid than weight that makes you feel slow and cumbersome which to me is how Kh1 felt at times. Also the feel of KH2's combat just feels so much faster, smoother and more accurate and overall more fun to me. Also I feel when used right KH2 summons can be amazing, Stitch is almost broken, Genie is very strong, Peter Pan is basically Tinkerbell from KH1, Chicken little is good for spacing in pulling in enemies (which you could just use magnet though), overall KH1 I only found Tinkerbell to be any sort of really helpful overall, maybe Mushu sometimes. As for Donald and Goofy I think they were pretty useless in both games aside from healing and maybe being a little more coherent in KH1, but using limits with them in KH2 is very useful. Nonetheless, I can understand your points and I still have fun with KH1 overall, but to me the fast, fluid combat of KH2 is in no real comparison to KH1's where I feel like the combat was more why fighting enemies were difficult rather than the actual enemies being difficult themselves.

totally agree, on higher levels there should be punishment for mindless/ complacent game play. pretty much anything exploitable as well, reflect mashing, dodge roll mashing, i mean fine and dandy for casual play, but aside form data battles, if even that it doesnt really ever take punishment for abuse of abilities. and i like that you point out the down grade form kh1 having taken keyblade length (somewhat) into account. as opposed to kh2 almost completely done away with that idea.

    • @MemoriesLP

      Aleisis I dissagree with you.
First: The Summons at KH 2 are actually pretty good.
      - Chicken will sttager enemies (Like Magnet).
      - Stitch stuns enemies, give you orbs and regen your mp.
      - Petter Pan gives orbs and heal you.
      - Geene does heave damage.
And about Donald and Goofy, I agree that in 1 it was easier for them to be alive because of Donald spamming cure. But in 2, they still help you a lot, like Goofy ability that stun enemies while sppining around, or Donald firework limit.
While I also dislike triangle reaction command, I dont think it breaks the game too much on higher dificulty. All bosses use it properly, while against heartless it never feels abusive.
Kh 2 has a huge variaty of gameplay styles and gameplay tools, and even so it manages to be well balanced overall.
Kh 1 was very bad and frustating to play. Without Combo Master you would miss attacks all the time. Enemies teleport, run away, get invinvible during a huge period of time. Even though that makes the combat more tatical, it was not fun, fights took more time than usual because of enemies taking forever to reapear or something (those fucking witches, for example).

      1. Donald had Second Chance in KH1, but not in KH2. This is why he's always dead. (KH1 Donald would tank a beefy hit, gain a ton of MP back via MP Rage, then spread the heals)
      2. Maybe KH2 had a huge variety, but it suffered from Dominant Strategy Syndrome, which is just as the name implies (there are others, but no real reason to use them), in all modes but Critical.
      3. You're wrong! I know now, without a doupt, KH1...is light! *MLP gets blasted with light from a random door*
      4. But in all seriousness, there were (magic) ways to bypass many of those things you just mentioned.
(Tip: for the Wizard heartless, when they start using Thundaja just cast Aeroga on yourself and give them a hug, they'll keep taking damage and either die before the move is over, or as soon as it ends)

Great vid. I completely agree with your points. Unrelated, it kinda irks me when people (adults) complain about the kh games being too easy. If y'all couldn't tell, this series is aimed at kids. Kids who are, dare I say, casual gamers. Do you think they would bother with these games if regular/proud mode was too hard? Critical mode is there for people with a higher skill level who actually want a challenge. Complaints about button mashiness and difficulty are kinda irrelevant when it comes to this series imo. As you said, the OP moments make you feel like a badass and ultimately make the game more enjoyable regardless of the difficulty.

I agree with basically everything but the part of having to think which keyblade you should use is kinda busted, you can literally beat critical without zero difficult going with kingdom key until you get hero's crest, then you use hero's crest until you get decisive pumpkin (some people use circle of life but air combo boost is way better than most hastera) and then you beat the game. It's literally 3 keyblades when they offer around 15 keyblades, the combat is definitely good, fluid and makes you feel good after beating a boss or a difficult mob fight but saying it takes any thinking is way too much favoritism towards KH2. It's good with flaws, still the best game combat-wise.
Edit: This can be considered nitpicking, but I hate the fact that ultima weapon isn't the most op thing ever, it's literally the ultimate stuff and it's meant to be busted, but decisive pumpkin is just too insane

Firaga and especially wisdom and final form firaga absolutely destroys bosses like Demyx and Vexen. It doesn't give them a chance and you drain their hp faster than Usain Bolt on steroids running 100 meters.
Saix is a joke when you use the Peter Pan strat. It stunlocks him and the timing is incredibly easy to master.
Data Larxene is possible to beat by just standing in the middle and using nothing but reflect. You can do it one Handed and it'll still be a breeze.

Bayonetta and Nier Automata are two hack and slash games while not exactly the same as KH2 are still very good and fast paced, real time action games. Also for KH2, while the beginning of the game takes a while and is very story based, the overall meaning of the story and the connection to the later story kind of got wiped, so you could easily just enjoy the game for what it is. Just enjoy the combat, Disney worlds, FF characters, great bosses, and even the story if you don't connect it to the rest of the series is actually pretty good. As for combat it's my favorite since 2 the feeling of it is great, the main gripes I have with it are the attraction flow and random limits. Both because I can't control when they appear really or they appear to much and the attractions do way to much damage. Hoping they'll change them somewhat in the future either make them appear less often, make it so we can turn them off or allow a better control of when we use the abilities. I'm coming back to KH2 for the first time with 1.5 + 2.5 and I have to say, that fucking Roxas fight a load of toss. It's so needlessly difficult at such a boring part of the game. I've been going at it for weeks now, I'm level 60 and he still just shits all over my shoes. My main issue seems to be that I can never recover in time to use an item. I thought maybe I should be using megalixirs so I could use Curaga, but nope. No time to use items. Other people doing the fight seems to beat him in a minute or so, but no matter how many times I try and how many levels over I am, I'm never close to beating him.

Some advice is guarding right at the start and attacking him for one combo, then using reflect a lot after that, and when you find yourself about to die quickly go into limit form. You have to learn his move set I used to have trouble with him too, but I played it enough and now I beat him in 3 or 4 tries each time, grinding can be the answer but for this game it is about learning their move set.

You can loop roxas with revenge value abuse. Make sure guard break and finishing leap are equipped and shortcut thunder, blizzard, reflect, and ethers, when I did this at lvl 1 I needed 4 ethers so you shouldn't need more than that..
Guard or reflect the opener it doesn't matter. Then do a combo with a finishing leap at the end. When he lands, attack, thunder, reflect, attack (this should be a guard break.)This combo starts the loop you will be doing. Do this 2 more times and then ether. After the ether replace the first attack with blizzard so the combo will be blizzard, thunder, reflect, guard break. Do it again then ether. It's an infinite loop from there and will work until you mess it up or kill him.

I've heard a lot about this, but I've also heard that it's iffy on 2.5. That's the only thing I haven't tried besides straight hacking the game, so I'll have to give it a go to find out if it works or not.
I wish there was a skip fight feature or something, especially with these Final Mix fights. Maybe I just suck at the game, but for this to be the first time I've had trouble throughout the whole thing, I'm glad I didn't make a new play with a higher difficulty. I love this game but I can't stand when games do this to its players.
It's especially upsetting for me because this fight is STILL giving me trouble almost a fucking month later and I've seen people on UA-cam do it in under a minute without triggering his bullshit Desperation Move. On the topic of his DM, why the hell is it undodgeable before the data fights, when you'll actually have glide?
Alright, I'm done bitching. For now.

    • @Argygle
      @Argygle 7 років тому +2

The loop is not iffy on the remakes, it is guaranteed. Also you can dodge his dm if you simply run in a circle in the correct spot, sort of the middle ground between where his DM ring is and the outer ring. If you run left you have a seemingly random chance of being hit whereas running right doesn't seem to do that. But if you do the loop you skip the DM entirely, as you've seen in videos. Also the reason why you probably thought the loop was inconsistent is likely from the physics issues that came with 60 FPS which they fixed in the most recent patch. However I did this loop for roughly an hour on the fight on patch 1.02, at level 1 so a break out could mean a random death for me, and he didn't break out once.

I don't know, I see countless of opinions stating that KH II has a fantastic combat system.... but I can't agree with any of these.
My experience with KH II was painfully boring, and judging by what other people say.... I almost can't UNDERSTAND WHY it was so boring for me in particular, for how weird that sounds.
I'll try to explain myself, but beware, wall of text incoming:
I've recently played the game on standard mode and I found it WAY difficult than it should be, as well as extremely repetetive.
Every fight for the first half of the game essentially boiled down to mashing the X button, sometimes press the square button to use that attack that lifts enemies in the air (wich most of the time didn't work god knows why) and mashing triangle to win when a reaction command appeared. I occasionally also used Blizzard hoping that I could vary up the gameplay or Fire when I found myself surrounded, but every time I did I found myself regreting using them because they're basically useless, as the former does the same amount of damage as a single hit from the keyblade and the latter was just not as good of a crowd-control tool, as enemies that weren't regular or lightly armored heartless wouldn't even flinch. And of course I used Drive to mash X faster.
It also pained me the fact that there was no dodge ability or button, WHICH APPARENTELY THERE IS as every single KH II video I saw showed that dodging is possible, BUT I COULDN'T FIGURE THAT OUT FOR THE WHOLE DURATION OF THE GAME, HOW CAN I BE SO DUMB???? Seriously, I was baffled when I discovered that it was actually possible do roll/dodge in this game, because I'm pretty sure I did everything in my power to try finding a way to do that but I couldn't....
Moving on... Every single boss battle was a monumental pain in the ass, as it either consisted in me having the mash the X button while standing near the goddamn hit-sponges that the bosses are, or desperately trying to figure out how the boss works all the while getting bombared by its attacks, that usually launched my in the air making me lose balance, having to either mash circle to escape if I was lucky and able not to get hit again right after, OR press square to do that attack that makes me regain balcance but cannot be controlled, which means that if I had to use it I had to stay incredibly close to the enemy to, IF I WAS LUCKY, stagger it, otherwise I would get hit again, ending up in a very frustrating game of "Don't get hit or you'll lose balance again".
In the second half of the game, I completely thrown away the use of the square button, as it wasn't effective at all, as well as the use of magic, also not caring at all about Reflect and Magnet because, judging by their description, they just didn't seem any useful. By watching videos like this one, I of course discovered that Reflect is actually FUGGING BROKEN and could've helped me IMMENSLY during some boss fights. Speaking of bossfights again, can I just say that Jaffar and whoever designed that fight can burn to hell?
Anyway, I'm sorry if this getting way too long, but I'm trying to make a point, because I really want to give this series another chance, and maybe some of you can help me understand what I did wrong while playing, and why I had such a different experience compared to most of you.
Going back to the point, after the second half of the game I decided that the best strategy was to spam the shortest grounded combo possible, as a new combo finisher I obtained dealt much more damage than anything I had before.
After losing a lot to that guy with the guitar that uses water attacks (sorry I forgot his name) in Hollow Bastion, I decided to REALLY give it in and undetstand every single mechanic that could have helped me during that fight, I'm speaking about the part where you need to kill those 10 water clones in 10 seconds in particular.
I decided to buy items, as well use synthesis, give much attention to the abilities that I gave to the gang, and try figuring out how those DAMN Limit commands work, as up to that point they'd simply pop out and I'd end up randomly pressing triangle and activating them.
(By the way I figured out that the command pops up when you're physically near your teammate, correct me If I'm wrong).
I basically sticked to this strategy until the very end of the game. Mash X or Triangle and activate Drive to mash X faster. Occasionally use Thunder as well, as it seemed like a much better alternative than Blizzard, and heal.
And it's not like I'm bad at videogames, I finished many more than I can count, so having an experience as weird as this baffles me.
It was an extremely boring experience, often frustrating, as I'd end up getting stuck on some sections and almost giving up the game, something that I'm happy I didn't do as I really like the story so far.
I think I won't replay KH II again, or any KH game for that matter, thinking of how painfully boring and repetitive the gameplay could be, at least until I meet someone who is ready to make me believe otherwise, but I'll be watching the cutscenes of the games, since I'm interested in the story.

Can't lie you have a vary unique experience and opinion of the combat. The combat usually gain criticisms on the lower difficulties for yes being button mashy but also being to easy not to hard. Because the idea of something being button mashy means that you don't have to think to fight the enemies so you just spam the same attacks and you easily defeat them. For you it's still hard for some reason.
Are the games that you play usually turned based games and not usually action rpg hack and slashers like Dark Souls of KH, because your assessment on what makes the bosses hard or difficult aren't criticisms or flaws with the bosses. Such as having to figure out and work around the bosses mechanics and adapt to them. Learn the abilities the game gives you, use the limits which are pretty simple to use just press triangle to use it when the triangle emblem appears above the command deck (it appears if you have a limit ability connected to the character and then auto limit also as an ability connected and it will give you the choice to use it when you have any amount of MP left and are close to the party member, if you use all your MP you cant use it and the limit also consumes all your MP, also also you do have two tabs on the command deck that you can switch back and forth to and their is a limit tab to choose limits that you have equipped).
Use your magic, especially reflect when you get it and Magnet is very useful for crowd control and I would surely use Cure too, use drive forms which are very useful and powerful, play around with the abilities you get and the keyblades, use summons and learn what they do, if you think youre underleveled then level up and go back. The game gives you a whole lot of options to defeat enemies. It's part of the game learning the mechanics of what all the things you can do and the strategy of the boss almost all action rpgs work like this. I feel like you got lawled into thinking in your case you can button mash all the bosses to death, but it seems like you have need to do more than that. Also for Jafar's boss fight is pretty simple, beat up his stomach, wait for the reaction command, and then attack his head until he dies, aside from that just dodge or reflect the debris the boss is overall pretty simple.
PS you did find out correctly that combo finishers are very strong, but you dont always want a short combo.
Also you have block, you get dodge roll when you go back to Twilight Town a little later in the game when you get Limit form. You do know how growth abilites work in the game?
You can get new traversal abilities such as jumping higher, glide, dodgeroll, etc with leveling up your drive forms, which gives you a multitude of ways to dodge and move around later in the game.
The bosses in the game are pretty well made and fair for the most part, most enemies do stagger and their is a mechanic added to bosses and enemies called revenge value where after a while depending on how much damage you do to them they can break out of a combo and retaliate, keeping you from only button mashing them and learning to block, dodge or attack back from their own retaliation. You have to learn when the boss attacks, block, dodge, reflect or attack back at the correct time. The bosses give a good indication of what they are gonna do next and also sometimes its best not to recover in the air as that allows for them to attack again, sometimes just fall to the ground and then reflect or dodge. The game gives you all the tools to fight everything, you just have to learn to use them and counter act what the bosses are doing. If that's not your cup of tea then fine, but the games combat is very well made especially when playing on Critical mode. Believe me if you wanna see poorly made and unbalanced combat DDD and BBS are both games whose combat is kind of a mess.
