      Devon and Cornwall is where the REALLY narrow roads are.

    • @IzzyaliceD
      @IzzyaliceD 7 років тому +10

      Yeah Cornwall is where I was thinking of. A lot of the roads are only just wide enough for one car and then have a few wider passing places that you have to reverse into if a car comes towards you.

  • @Quantiad
    @Quantiad 8 років тому +37

    That road is a pretty luxurious country lane. It's very common to find yourself driving down one half as wide with twists every 20 metres, you then have that awkward mount of the hedge when you come head to head. Then someone decides to make it a bus route!

  • @glimpsesofnorfolk
    @glimpsesofnorfolk 8 років тому +81

    I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this, thanks for sharing. You would have a heart-attack driving the English lanes where I live. I know the USA is a big place but I've passed through much of it and most people have been kind. You too sound like kind people. I hope you enjoyed your stay, and please find some way to forgive those who're unkind in their comments; it's an internet thing, the web just makes some people sick you know.

  • @thezulucow

    When you get used to it you realise that you don't have to pull off the road to pass cars. There's a physical phenomenon in which the presence of two cars travelling in opposite directions causes a minor gravitational field which actually expands space slightly and they can fit through. It's never been explained before and its amazing when it happens but it does indeed work.

    • @thezulucow
      @thezulucow 8 років тому +3

      +thezulucow Also, I grew up round there and those roads are great for both driving round and cycling. I went to school in Ramsgate which was on the sign at the end.

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaa_99

    I love how you called it a trail😂😂
    There are places you can reverse into to allow cars to move past. If you aren’t near one you have to reverse until you find one.
    So many roads in the U.K. were built like this, that it would be too expensive to widen all of them. They were built for horses and carts.
    I like going along them because they tend to be quite winding and bumpy which is fun! And I enjoy watching out of the window :)

    • @thefirefulwarrior
      @thefirefulwarrior 8 років тому +6

      the entire lane would have probably been national speed limit, the best thing is that national speed limit in the 60s or sometime similar use to mean unrestricted speed limit. so you could imagine cars going down there or attempting to go faster then the 60 limit

    That sign around 4:00 where theres a straight line and then a line with a curve in it means that the road narrows on the left-hand side of the road. if the curved lines on the other side it means on the right-hand side and where theres 2 of them it means on both sides

    The "One way traffic" sign wasn't that, it appears to be a "Road narrows on both sides" sign which seems more fitting given the road does suddenly become more narrow. One way traffic signs are blue...
    Also there are such things as "One way traffic" in the UK but the signs are usually quite obvious and make it pretty clear.

    I have seen so many videos of people from the US coming to England on holiday, they stay in London and then tell everyone that they have been to the UK. This couple has come over to England from the US, and headed straight for the English countryside by car. Thank you so much for showing the beautiful countryside and that London does not represent UK/England, London is very different to the rest of the country.

    • @disoriented1

      In the U.S., it seems all the Brits coming over visit California or New York, or maybe Florida. I understand that..if I couldn't spend a lot of time in the U.K., I would probably stay in London, as most Brits stay in NY or LA. But I am smitten with the charming and pastoral English countryside! When we do encounter a British visitor in the the midwest ('flyover country'), we go out of our way to be hospitable, and women swoon when they hear an authentic British accent!

    SatNavs will often direct you the shortest way, not the best way. Locals would probably avoid the narrow roads which would normally be used only if the destination was in that road.

    All that sign meant was junction on bend ahead. And you do realise the national speed limit of the United Kingdom is 60mph.
