Half Lives: Aleksandr Akimov - At the Helm of Chernobyl

- The person steering Chernobyl Unit Four to its scheduled shutdown on the night of April 26th, 1986, was not Anatoly Dyatlov, as considered by many, but the Shift Supervisor Aleksandr Akimov. It was he who made many of the difficult decisions that night, all of which culminated in the explosion and race to prevent a worse accident from occurring, ultimately costing his life.
But who was Akimov, really? Was he the easily swayed man depicted in the HBO TV miniseries, the complete opposite, or somewhere in between? I’ll let you be the judge of this.
The background art in the thumbnail of this video is the "Shipwreck of The Chernobyl Titanic" by Alexey Breus, who was present in the Control Room the morning after the explosion.
Rest in peace to this man. He cared about his co workers, his job, and his family. He likely died the worst death you could possibly imagine. He did what he could.
I wish I could give a hug to Akimov. He was a good guy caught in a terrible situation, and didn't think twice to give his life to try to mitigate the situation
this commet deserves a thousand likes
very interesting video, nothing beats a video by That Chernobyl guy after a long week
wow, you won’t find anything like this on the Internet, thanks to you I can find out everything in detail
You're welcome!
Thank you for another well-done video. Akimov looks like the kind of guy I could have easily been good friends with. He and Toptunov conducted themselves in the highest order after the accident. They, most certainly Akimov, must have been aware that going into the pipe room to open the valves would come at a very, very steep price, but did so regardless. May their souls rest in peace...
Yet another masterpiece thank you Sir for making my day just a bit better.
Fantastic work. You’ve really upped your game with these videos. Thanks so much for putting in the effort.
Your cited sources tend to make my reading list ever longer. Great video!
another great video as always. thanks as always.
Another outstanding video, Thank you
Beautiful nicely curated high quality content channel.Kudos to that chernobyl guy❤
You have such an engaging narration style. Makes the storytelling really effective.
All these videos are so good! Very well done! Thank you!!! 👍👍👍
I must admit that I still don't know what really was the cause of this desaster, but perhaps one day you will do a definite "How it happened" video.
Looking forward to more ...
I've been looking for one but that's because there is not a definitive story. There are a lot of unanswered questions that will probably never be found out. Moscow took the tapes of audio recordings. And other things went up with the explosion or died with the operators. But the two main issues were 1) the graphite displacers and 2) the xenon poisoning of the reactor from the delayed test. 3) Soviet overconfidence and lack of safety culture. It was a matter of all the cursed dominos being lined up just perfectly. There have been a lot of accidents that were covered up. So it's not actually that unlikely that this did happen.
i dont usually comment but its weird, i just found this channel through the iceberg video and now you just uploaded a new one?? wow appreciate the effort and time put into these considering regular uploads are no joke. keep up the good work!! also 1 in 10 million per year?!? if that quote from him is indeed credible, it aged poorly sadly… and how come they let that smear campaign with this book pass by? there must be many more books written about chernobyl, so why this one was used as a source i still dont get it. perhaps officials directed him to wrote it because maybe it fits their narrative? idk sorry if i sound very ignorant now
People's attentiveness to detail is often not great. Even authors who write on Chernobyl misunderstand great many things and use that book as a source. Craig Mazin, the creator of the popular HBO/Sky mini-series, even relied on it. That's what I like about Chernobyl. Due to the lying and deception involved you find out who's actually incisive and who coasts on people's stupidity.
In another video I think the dyatlov one, Chernobyl guy says the author of that book was a personal rival of dyatlov and he just put that out there bc of a grudge pretty much
Love the half lives series! I had always wanted to know more about these men I depth
Excellent video. If I might make a suggestion, I would recommend investing in a pop filter for your microphone. You can make one yourself with a wire hanger and a nylon stocking.
3rd time suggesting that you do a series of channels all named "That __________ guy", where each channel you take deep dives into topics that interest you!
Maybe not ask repeatedly. If he wants to, he will. But this might be his focus. And it’s not nice to push for people to do things you want. Find other channels that do other things if you want more documentary series. I’m sure you’ll find someone. Who focuses on that.
Maybe in the future, but it would be wholly different to this channel.
I grow a lot of pepper plants, for example. Of course there are many other subjects I'm interested in, and I'm sure I can find a way to sneak them onto this channel. :)
10:56 did you meant toptunov? Also great video
What is the game shown in this video? Is it just a render? Does it actually work for the public?
The Chernobyl series from sky was high quality drama. But it’s highly regrettable in my opinion how they depicted Akimov.
Wait it was actually Dyatlov that said the Reactor was exploded?! How could the TV show get this imporatant detail so wrong?
Just as I wake up..
Could you make a vid about Steinberg? He was a main Part of a huge german ZDF documentation. It was extremely interesting. His character impressed me.
It's definitely a story that interests me. I have a lot of information about him, so it would definitely make a long and unique story :)
@@thatchernobylguy2915 that is awesome❤️❤️❤️
Bottom line….it was none of their fault. It was the fault of the design.
Even in the most fair and impartial trial, Akimov would have faced accountability and questions. He wasn’t just a guy pressing buttons on command. T There were things that happened way before and after that moment of the AZ 5 button that called for answers. By no means does his bio show a dumb ignorant spineless guy with no personality, but that creates other problems.
🌷🌷
I would love to see a true re-enactment of these events without the political white washing and dramatic BS as seen in TV shows.
A true description such as this.
The HBO show makes me so mad after I started watching this channel and realized how it just repeated the Soviet lie by accident 🤦♀️
I'm hungry for hacks about chernobyl
Who??
@@gidoe4441 I meat to say facts about chernobyl
@@jromannegrete4878🤣🤣🤣 Chernobyl life hacks
EDIT: MISINFORMATION - the video I reference in this comment is actually unrelated to Chernobyl
if anyone wants to hear Akimov's voice as well as a snippet of the communications during that night u can check out ua-cam.com/video/QAxBq9ST_j0/v-deo.htmlsi=rVRgiaghfng5-8Y3
which of the voices belongs to whom as well as when exactly this was recorded i cant say
This video isn't from Chernobyl. It's an accident at a VVER NPP, and the recording is the reactor operator trying to shift the blame onto another engineer when it was his fault.
@@thatchernobylguy2915 my bad
@@MrTrollland Don't sweat it, a lot of people get it mixed up. I might do a video on it in the future :)
10th like, first comment
your "au Dio" is Hor rrrible - un Bearable!
Total nonsense((
How so?

What did they have for lunch before the explosion
