  • In the first part of our Veep Ending Explained series, we look at how Selina Meyer completes her transformation into the unstoppable, soulless monster she’s always had the potential to be. The end of her story is a warning - that if you "give up your Gary," that if you stand for nothing but yourself, then your legacy will be... no legacy at all. Snaggle Toothed good cause I've never understood people who assume others are children just for liking animation. With all the critical praise, golden globe nominations, well written stories, gorgeous art work, and many people who analyze them like this channel, it still doesn't make sense why people like you treat animation like a joke. Also I've never understood people who can't argue their point beyond just repeating their point, but I guess I'll understand that when I'm older too. Oh well

      Don’t forget it was the real Nobel Peace Prize and not the one made of hard plastic Selina got. I think it’s also to mean that when you do things with the best of intentions and just because it’s the right thing to do, it’ll be duly acknowledged. Selina only wanted to create a legacy; a LEGACY that was quite shit regardless and despite of the effort she put in.

  • @Anachronismgorl

    You know Selina's character arch is kind of like Daenerys Targaryen's done right.

    • @Anachronismgorl
      @Anachronismgorl 5 років тому +52

      From a Bicycle seat Well it's not a perfect analogy. I think my reasoning is they both end their series being far worse people than they were originally and in that respect ”Veep” is a better demonstration of a downward spiral. You're right though Dany started off as basically a good person and she fell much further.

    • @LFire12
      @LFire12 5 років тому +39

      Can't agree with the analogy at all. For starters the writing bears no comparison. There was no gradual descent, Dany was a good person till her sudden and jarring turn around in the final two episodes of the season. Everything you could charge her with was 100 percent also done by other good characters in the show. And secondly as they kept hammering home (terribly) was she was her madness, her fall was in no way dictated by her principles or personal character flaws...this was a genetic predisposition she (apparently) could not escape. They are not comparable as characters at all, except that they are women....

    • @Anachronismgorl
      @Anachronismgorl 5 років тому +57

      Lian McGuire Well that's sort of my point. If the writers of Game of Thrones Wanted Dany to become a villain they should have set it up properly. Veep did a better job showing Selina progressively becoming a worse person so her being a villain makes sense. Hence why I said Daenerys Targaryen’s character arch done right.

    • @ModeratelyAmused
      @ModeratelyAmused 5 років тому +18

      @@LFire12 Dany was a good person? She was a self righteous child that demanded she be on the throne that her father tried to burn to the ground. She was a crazed lunatic that would do anything to be on top. She talked about breaking the wheel but only after she was on top which didn't make her different. She refused all peaceful negotiations and when once again confronted with the truth that she was not the rightful heir, she wanted to keep it a secret because it was never about being justice but just finishing what her father had started. Don't be fooled by the freeing slaves making her a good person. I do agree with you though that Selina was never a good person either. She was a heartless politician through and through. But you are correct that Selina didn't have a story arc. She talked a lot about her legacy but was always in denial from episode one that it didn't matter what she did as long as she became president. She was never meant to be an empathetic character. Much like Julia's other two long running characters, Selina was just meant to be a hot mess through and through.

    I never thought of Amy, Kent or Dan's ending as depressing. I truly think they just embodied who they were. Amy and Dan may have loved each other, even briefly, but they would have made a miserable couple and awful parents (Amy would not have enjoyed being a mother.) Kent has a child working in NASA and lives on a farm with his wife, away from politics and living simply - he won. It was only Gary who I really felt for. I do believe he and Selina were twisted soulmates in a sense.

    • @strangething7379
      @strangething7379 4 роки тому +48

      I don't consider Amy or Dan or Kent to be very good people but I think the ending of Veep is pretty bitter when Selina effectively burns everyone who's worked for her in the past 7 years. She sticks Amy with Jonah, she makes Richard fire Dan, she pushes Jonah as veep which drives Kent away, she quickly moves on from Ben's heart attack, and she scapegoats Gary, and this isn't even mentioning the long estrangement from her family. Selina gets what she wants in the end but realizes what it cost pretty much everything. So i guess even if most of these characters aside from Selina are better for it in the long run, it's still kinda depressing when it happens

Not only did she die alone & truly unhappy, clearly from the way she looked around sad in the Oval Office alone, but she will be remembered as a shitty president. Look how quickly they moved on from her death to the death of Tom Hanks. She’s nothing. The rest of her staff won. As soon as she fucked everyone over, they ended up leaving that toxic relationship with Selina & lived better lives because of it. Minus Gary who truly lost the most. Was in prison for years & is still loyal despite it all. Tony Hale described it as a dog returning to eat its vomit.

    So, she is like Daenerys but done and written correctly? At the end, Danny was also alone, everyone who loved her either died or betrayed her (except Grey Worm but he is basically her VP). She sacrificed an entire city to make sure she would be queen and will burn anything to make sure she has power. Whoever didn’t bend the knee to her would die. And when she died, politics moved on and the world didn’t crumble into pieces after all.
    Edit: just realized they made the comparison in part 2 video

    I always thought Gary got what he deserved. Every time Selina said something terrible to someone, Gary was right behind her nodding in affirmation.
    I remember how happy Gary was to dock Amy a day of pay for having an abortion, one that Amy specifically wanted her to have.
    I loved it how many of the characters seemingly had favorable outcomes in their lives, while Selina was alone and ultimately had her funeral overshadowed by Tom Hanks.

      I tend to think that was why Kent liked Sue so much: she was so hyper-focused and efficient at one job that it was almost mechanical. She's likely more loyal to her desk and computer than any actual person, and I remember them joking about her being in an old portrait, and it made me think of how she's basically the physical embodiment of an office fixture. Far as we can tell, all she does all day is keep people away from the V.P.
      I also think it may have been why they didn't have Sue at the funeral, nor have any mention of what she's doing in the year 2040. I think we're just supposed to assume she's still manning the desk, and we're left to wonder like Kent if she's some kind of immortal being tethered to the White House for all eternity

    I always wondered how long Gary was in prison for. I hope after he got out he was able to find a life for himself. I know the finale portrays him as a broken man but it's entirely possible he found some happiness after getting out of prison and was just somber because of that specific occasion and the reflection of what she did to him.

    Lovely analysis, love the show. But I want to say that Gary was not her soul. He enabled her throughout the entire series, and Gary himself is quite vicious and cruel to other characters. He does love her unconditionally though, but I don't feel that he made Selina a better person. He was just this last person we thought she would betray. It would be like Dany killing Missandei. Gary was not Selina's Missandei. He was her dragon. If the show was about Gary, it would be a tragic cautionary tale, but he would have gotten exactly what he deserves. He was the minion.

    I felt so much empathy for Catherine during the entire series. How Selina couldn't love her own daughter was beyond my understanding. Catherine really was Selina's biggest victim. Selina paid no attention to Catherine ever .. so much that the audiences also stop paying attention to Catherine's entry and exit into the show. She becomes irreverent and unlikeble to the audiences in a similar fashion that she is to Selina. Its interesting how Selina missed/mentioned Catherine's name over the phone in the last scene.
    Either way, they were a very interesting mother-daughter duo. Great writing there.

    As the pile of Selina' evil deeds kept accumulating.. you'd assume she's gonna lose bad and finally get the horrible punishment she deserves. Instead, she ends up winning and losing everyone that ever loved and cared for her. Think of it, that's a better punishment coz it made her stop and question her life choices. If she'd lose, she'd never come to appreciate the people in her life, but only come to blame them even more. Only wining and losing them could do that to her.
