Watch: Dog protects lost 3-year-old

- A Cooperstown, North Dakota, mother frantically called 911 when she couldn't find her 3-year-old boy, who had been playing on their farm. She also noticed the family dog was missing.Authorities searched for them overnight Monday. CNN affiliate WDAY reports that a fireman on an ATV spotted the dog standing over the boy, who was asleep. Cooper the dog was protecting him from the cold and rain. And there's one other twist to the story -- watch and see. For more information please visit www.hlntv.com/video/2014/05/07...
Incompetent parents allowing a three year old to wander around the farm alone.
my 4 and 5 year old do it all the time and the dogs are with them too
Ryan Monroe Then you should be reported to CPS
he lives in NORTH FUCKING DAKOTA... Plus he wasn't alone he had the dog with him.
ibetyoucanthack1123 well then that makes it fine because we all know there is nothing dangerous in North Dakota and dogs are quite capable of taking care of a child. That's why you see so many ads for dogs and babysitting.
The thing that bothers me most about this is that it sounds like she wasn't even periodically checking up on him. In some situations I feel like it would be okay to let a kid play outside alone for a bit, depending on location and the behavior/maturity of the kid. But it sort of makes me sad that she was just waiting for him to come in on his own and she didn't think to check on him until it was nearing dark.
I was raised on an 8000 acre farm, and it was not unusual for mr to wonder all over the farm. I had my dog Butch, half GSD and half wolf, my mom did not worry about me as long as Butch was with me. I would roam through the woods, make houses out of a growth of bamboo, use things I found to use to play with in my pretend house. Butch was trained to bring me home when the sun started to go down, even if I didn't want to. He would grab my pants and start pulling, bark a couple of times, then started out in front of me, always checking back to make sure I was close to him. Dogs are smarter than people give them credit for. Big dogs want a job to do, and I was Butch's job.
My grandmother was Pennsylvania dutch and was raised on the farm her grandparents built. It was 300 acres, but was completely surrounded by the farms of relatives. There is no way her mother would let her roam around by herself at 3! I was a country kid, too, and my mother would never have allowed it. Why? Because 3 is just a baby! And that’s no judgment on the dog, my big sisters were German Shepherds and they were unbelievable. But 3 is still a baby. How full was that diaper? How long had he gone without food or water? Were his feet wet? Most people don’t have the physical ability to retain memories at 3! But you are okay just delegating motherhood to a dog 🥴
Thank God the dog has his shit together.
Best comment right here
Cooper is definitely earning his keep!🙄😒😕
the parents didn't
Living on a farm is much different than in the city but, yes, 3 years old is certainly too young to be left unattended. Thank God for Cooper and hopefully these young parents have learned a valuable lesson.
It's not normal to wait for a 3 y/o to come home when he gets hungry. Glad the dog has working brain cells.

I agree,as I raised all three of my kids in the British Columbia Bush, and believe me they were not out of sight ever. I don't know what's wrong with these people, but they don't look very smart, so I hope their child can help them later in life to get through what's left of theirs.
Joseph E Fasciani No kidding. This is supposed to be a feelgood story? It's a bloody tragedy.
Steve J lmfao
Coffins I agree with you the mother should of being watching her son .there's pedofiles everywhere men and women
springer was on
kid, you will be safer with the dog than your parents..
Unfortunately, many children have abusive or narcissistic parents.
Yes at some point, you will feel safer being surrounded with animals than your own parents.
To be fair she had to finish that last pork chop first.
Why do I feel all three of you are just city dwelling rats spewing out your uninformed opinions they way all city vermin do.🤔🤷♂️
@@fredjones7705 nice. I feel sorry for your kids.
@@tishtashtishtash So do they.
She waited for him when he went missing as she imagined he’d be home when hungry, wtffffff he’s 3! Omg
I'm constantly astounded at animals who protect the people they love. May these precious beings continue to show us how to be human.
Truer words were never spoken!!
When they know the parents apparently aren't smart enough to
Bad Parenting. Good dog.
Sitizen Kane yep..... it least the dog looked out for his family unlike his parents who left there 3 years old out side alone.
Owl Woman Exactly! And its also kind've sad how they think its funny. They're literally laughing while talking about it, also the dad said he was a little worried!? If I were that parent I wouldn't have leg that kid be out by himself in the first place! And if I had on accident I would be ballistic if I couldn't find him or her!
The TigersBane In addition, if I were the father, I WOULD BE ASHAMED TO BE ON CAMERA. I would not have told the media crap, because thats a big finger pointing at myself. Of course, I would never leave a child unattended for any period of time.
Why can't we have a dogs as parents they are much more reliable and responsible
Spoken like a born and raised city rat.🤦♂️
No doubt you went to a public school.🤣😂👍
Well at least someone was taking care of this baby. Because the mother sure wasn't. Shameful!
Just shows you....animals are amazing!!!
You're so dumb.
So glad this little boy was saved by his pet dog. Kids and dogs together give each other a lot of love. This dog definitely has paid back the family's kindness of adopting him.
I was doing a home visit very late in the day in late fall and noticed a puppy running underneath cars, wondering if someone would arrive to take him. After 30 minutes of waiting, I decided to take him with me. The dog and I finished the rest of our home visits together. My parents eventually kept him since I wasn't allowed to have an animal at my place. The dog is as happy as it can be and so am I.
There you have it. The dog's a better parent than the mom and dad
that was my thoughts while watching tbh
+Burt Reynolds The parents are relieved their child was found alive, they are still great parents.
+Ryan Witwicki Faddegon Give me a break! They are horrible parents...no matter of opinion about it...they need to take some parenting classes; however, they also don't have enough love and feeling for the the kid.
+Amy Thompson (Moon Kiss) I actually find it refreshing to see parents who allow their kid be play on the family farm without supervision. When I was his age I got to wonder around and it isn't such a bad thing.
+Brain Phelps Sorry, but you had crappy parents, too, or not loved or something. Three is way too young to not be supervised. You were just lucky.
Son goes missing "Yeah i was a little worried"
the husband is as sharp as a bucket of wet liver
he was taking action while is wife worried doing nothing ….. i just saw a father keeping is calm
Could be the huge faith he had in that dog, his son, and chance. Would be hard to admit that you let your brain entertain the worst.
Comme on... you can tell she is really nervous and sorry just telling the story.... don’t b so hursh
and you wouldn't be ,,, what a dumb statement
Some say the father is still trying to open his right eye

you really made me laugh :) I have the same note
It is hard to believe that some guys don't like dogs --- enough that they beat the dog, or kill them.
On the other side of the spectrum, this family saved this dog's life through adopting and welcoming it into the family, and gave him a home --- and the dog returned the favor. Aren't dogs awesome?!
Why the fuck was she letting a 3 year old play outside by himself long enough to wander a mile away.
Not only that she said at 7:30 she figured he will start getting hungry come in WOW, thankfully the boy has the dog because his parents are useless
because she is a stupid stupid fat sow
Uhm... how the hell did the kid end up a mile away in the first place?
aliens
He was off to Mexico after the mother found his stash of cocaine. She threatened to go to the cops. He couldn't go back to jail. This was his third strike, they'd lock him up and throw away the key. Since she was his mother he couldn't bring himself to kill her so he did what needed to be done. He fled and didn't look back once. He knew his best friend would always seem him through no matter what, so he didn't care for what his new life on the run would bring. At this point the mother was waiting at home, horrified at what she had just done. She had driven her only son away. After a wait which seemed to go on forever, she frantically picked up the phone to report him missing. She had attempted to ring her son's mobile several times to apologize and tell him she wasn't going to police about the drugs - but all of the calls went unanswered by her now exhausted son. The police quickly caught up with him, and thinking it was the end, he fell to his knees. Police with drawn guns approached the boy as his dog looked to him. "You and me. We've been through some crazy shit together, haven't we?", said the dog. "If we go, we go out together."
The dog now shielding the boy from the drawn weapons leaned in...
.. and the two shared what might have been their final kiss together.....
End of Chapter 4
FeIix CoIgrave lol you have nothing else to do right. Lol It's a good story though.
FeIix CoIgrave thats not funny
Yeah it is lol
She just left her 3 year old on his own and figured he’d come in whenever he was hungry. What the hell? So let me guess, no charges on the mom for neglect.

@@jackdorseysdisappointedfather Or someone with common fucking sense? A 3 year old can't barely wipe their own ass, get over yourself.
Thank God he’s ok. What a good dog too.
Please honor, pamper, and protect that dog for the rest of his life !!!
yes indeed!
Steak for Coopers supper that night.
It doesn't matter if they live in the country or not, a 3 year old child needs constant supervision. I'm an extreme dog lover and have very intelligent dogs but I would NEVER leave them in charge of a 3 year old. This child was left unattended for hours if he was found a mile away. That's a very scary thought...
Extreme
And that is why this country is a pussified as it is today. Our moms never knew where we were. One time when I was 7 we were caught in a big dust storm about 10 miles from home on our bicycles. My 3 friends all had tickets for driving without a license before they were 7 years old. We would hike out in the field several miles and camp, then hike back the next day. No one over 10 years old was ever around back in those days. I never knew anyone that even got hurt, except for maybe a scrape on the leg or arm or something.
@@britt0890 1st of all, you should learn comprehension because I did not say I had a ticket before I was 7, my 3 friends (they were all brothers and I don't mean black 🤣 ) had a ticket before they were 7. I've been driving since I was 5 and never had a ticket until I was 18. From the time I was 10-15 I went driving out on the dirt roads for 2-6 hours every Saturday with my friend Larry. The reason I lost you is because like I said, you and the rest of the country are pussified. I think about everyone in school was driving before they were 10 years old; I'm 57 now... this was back in the 1970's when people were real and didn't worry about hurting someone else's feelings. We had more of a brain at 7 than people do nowadays from 18-40.
I don't see how a mother & father could let it get to 7:30pm before checking on a three-year-old who had been out playing alone for what seems to have been quite a few hours. Thank goodness that Cooper the dog had better "parenting" skills than the little guy's human parents seem to have.
It would take a fair bit of time for a 3 year old to travel a mile.
Thats a really good dog 👍🐶
Dogs are loyal and protective of the young and weak ones in their packs. They are the one friend that will never let you down, will always be there when you need them.
the mother needs to be in jail. is do not know about the fother m
How beautiful. People who abuse dogs should be bitterly ashamed of themselves.

Damn, I tried not to cry 😢. Dog/kid stories bring out the waterworks 10 out of 10
Shame on the parents, how do you leave your three years old child unattended? Smh. Respect to that dog.
I know this comment is 6 years ago, may never see. But obviously, you do not live out in the country. Kids can get away quick and far before you know it. It only takes a few minutes. Especially if you are on a working farm. Kids can go from month to month with never venturing far and you start trusting that to just one day they up and decide to go far. Had the same thing happen to me when my twins were about the same age. Thankfully they stuck to a trail and our dog started barking when they got too far.
They said they found him a mile away.
I bet he was still 3 miles from the next human being.
Please learn more about the country.
You might actually enjoy living there.👍
@@jackdorseysdisappointedfather people aren't the only that can hurt a child. I could make a list of things that could hurt him out there, so just making excuses is a load of crap, they should have been watching him.
@@tonismith3707 your list would get eaten by the dog.🤗👍
@@jackdorseysdisappointedfather I live out here on a farm, and have cousins down the road who have a girl who will be 3 this month. She's never, and I mean never, more than 75 feet from one of her parents when she's outside. There are 70-lb coywolves and 600-lb black bears in the area. Coywolves have attacked human children within 75 miles of here in the last 5 years, and a pair of them almost got one of my dogs a couple of years ago. Leaving a 3-yr-old kid unattended around here would be super negligent.
watch your kid better even on a farm
So many people have been saved by their rescue dogs. Moral of the story: always do the right thing, you never know when it'll come back to you. PS. I grew up on a huge farm and if my mom turned her back for a second, I was gone. Always got back home safe when I was hungry. I was also surrounded by animals and even the orneriest cow of them all loved my little toddler ass. Plus my mom is awesome. So reserve your judgment. A farm is very different from a city.
"Look at us! We're on the TV!" Great parents
Those parents better be glad they have a dog cause if they didn't their son would be dead.

My sister is 4 and we let her outside alone because we have a guard dog. Normally you wouldn't think a little boy would wonder off so far. And dogs normally protect the youngest. She trusted the dog.
maybe they just want him to grow up hard, unlike the pussies of today in front of there screens and touch phone, this little guy will survive an apocalypes.
the fuck he will no its just the his parents are DUMBFUCKS and left the kid outside if it wasn't for that dog he would've died if anything the dog would survive

walmartian
Great!
Why are you leaving a 3 year old child unattended?
aw, what a great dog!
so many people need dogs to keep them and mostly their kids safe.
Every kid should have a dog. I got my first dog, who she's no longer with us, when I was about two. Some family frinds had to move, but couldn't bring their dog with them, which is sad, but they gave her to us. My mom told me that while I was still in a crib, if I woke up crying, that she'd go get my mom or did if they didn't wake up. Her name was Loxie, and she was a Golden Shepard. She lived for 15 years, and she went from Texas to South Carolina, where we had to put her down. She kept going for us while we were moving, and she passed knowing we were safe and that she had been the greatest dog ever. I really miss her, it's been about 4 years now.
Rest in peace, Loxie.
Rest in Peace, Loxie

Nope, OP has the closer of it- this family is his pack, the dog was the older member of the pack with a lost pup, he needed to keep the pup safe. Dogs aren't eager to turn on eachother if they have a good family.

Fantastic heart warming story! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I have a 3 year old sibling and I truly can’t imagine leaving her outside to her own devices and waiting for her to come in on her own accord because she’s hungry. Even with my brother, when he was three. I just can’t imagine leaving a three year old unsupervised for a long period of time outdoors.
The dad was like I was a little worried . A LITTLE UR SON IS FRIKIN MISSING AND UR A LITTLE WORRIED

My sister once ran away when she was very young. Their dog also stayed right with her the whole time.
It's just what dogs sometimes do. To them you're the alpha which means that your child/puppy comes first in the pack.
Still you can't always rely on an animal to save the day. But it does happen. Thank God.

When I was 7, I walked a mile to the gas station in my pj's with a Barbie lunchbox with my birthday money in it to buy a candy bar. My dog Baby followed me the whole way there and back. She knew I wasn't supposed to be doing what I was doing and helped keep me safe. The intuition and protectiveness of dogs is truly amazing. And yes, in hindsight, I realize that what I did was incredibly dangerous, but to the logic of a 7 year old whose dad was at work and mom was in bed, it was an ingenious way to score some candy.

People in defense of eating dogs in China say "Hey eating a dog is no different than eating a pig or cow. Some people have them as pets just like dogs." Lets see a pig or cow protect a child. These are beautiful and special creatures and don't deserve to be killed and eaten.
Actually there have been cases of pigs being guard pigs on farms. Just letting you know. And in India killing and eating a cow is bad so just because in your culture eating dog is wrong don't attack another cultures meat choices cause they can attack yours the same way.
Geo Storm I do attack China and most corrupt and greedy Asian countries with no hesitation. They have no "culture" or any kind of civilization in their barbaric countries, they destroy everything around them with massive pollution for their insane greed, they poach all wildlife, including the nearly extinct wildlife of Africa and they kidnap and torture dogs and other pets. Those are crimes, so don't help them point their bloody fingers at the massive abuse of livestock by other countries, as if those things excused them. If you encourage those type of crimes, I'd gladly spare a dog's valuable life to serve you up as first course for those Asia terrorists' breakfast. Never, never do that again.
***** The pig I was speaking of is in the U.S. and I'm just pointing out the intelligence of the animal and cultural differences not political views cause they have nothing to do with the subject at hand. So yes I still stick by what I said before, just because their culinary choices don't agree with you does not make them any less "civilized" than you are. So on this subject I think we should just agree to disagree.
Geo Storm So the choices of Germans to gas millions in concentration camps under Hitler, according to you was an excusable "cultural difference", and the choices of cannibals to eat people after practicing some of their torture culture before boiling them alive is a minor "culinary difference" and not a moral problem, therefore that's all fine and dandy in your deranged mind. You have serious issues, and I hope you don't own any guns or sharp objects.
***** What Hitler did was not a cultural thing it was a political thing. The two are not the same thing but for some reason you are confusing the two. Furthermore, I'm still not understanding what this has to do with a smart pig and people's culinary choices. Again, agree to disagree cause you are reading way too far into someone's eating habits equaling political views cause they are not the same and yes I do own sharp objects and guns but I don't see what that has to do with a pig being as smart as a dog and people eating pigs and dogs along with other animals though out the world.
This wonderful dog is the true parent ...
Wow. Simply watch your very young kid when outside. So lucky here.
This is why I will always have dogs. They are the best!

@@RezidueWithaZ You think letting a 3 year old play in the farmyard is unsafe, but you believe fences protect children?
LOL
Why are you only blaming the mother and not the father? He has equal responsibility over his child.
WOW! Thank God the dog knows how to be a parent! OMG! The mother and father are unbelievable!
Isn't it Cool Forrest Day
I was just thinking the same thing Moki Me.
Moki Me
Look around the video, they live in a rural area, not another house in sight, the boy was outside playing & likely just wondered off, chasing a butterfly or something then got confused & didn’t know how to get back home...
Sure no malice or intention to harm by the parents!
it's north dakota, nothing those parents did was wrong
Imagine having a city rat who raises her children around prostitutes and gang members tell you that YOURE the bad parent.🤣😂👍
Now THAT is a story worth hearing!
Thank god Cooper is a good parent.
I'd like to see a cat do that
their was a cat that walked threw fire five times to save her kittens. i would like to see humans do that.
lolcutepeoplez9
*Cough* firefighters *cough*
DaBeastMode yea true but thats their job.
lolcutepeoplez9
80% of firefighters are volunteers, so no it's not really their job they chose too do it.
lolcutepeoplez9 It's also the cats job to save their kittens so yeah.
A great dog. A lovely little kid. Careless parents! Thankfully the lil kid was fine.
I've watched this before and I'm sure I'll watch it again. How can anyone doubt that dog is man's best friend?
Mans best friend and protector.
