Inside my $56,000 A-Frame House for Debt-Free Living (Dave Ramsey Inspired)

- My wife and I quit our 9-5 jobs, sold most of our belongings, drove across country from Oregon to Michigan, and bought an A-Frame for debt-free living before 30.
The decision to move away from a big city to a smaller one allowed us to have more control over our time and actually focus the things that matter to us.
After following the Dave Ramsey baby steps, we are now completely debt free including the mortgage.

👨 Who am I?
I am Jereme - my wife and I paid off 50k in debt, quit our 9-5 jobs, sold most of our stuff, drove across country from Oregon to Michigan, and bought a small A-Frame Cabin in cash to live simply.
This decision gave us more control over our time to actually focus on the things that matter to us - serving Christ, each other, and our community better.
I created this channel to empower you to become more intentional with your time, talent, and money in order to live the life that you want to, not what society expects of you.

I loved the idea of not having TV be a centerpiece in your home.
Thanks! That was super important to us when designing the living space. We also didn’t want to get in the habit of turning on the TV by default when in the living area.
Yes! Please don't put one above your fireplace! They fit in a corner;) In our house, we don't even turn on the TV every day, don't have cable, and only watch movies now and then. We can truly go weeks without the TV🤷♀️
@@karalynne7616 same!
@@gojereme It's glorious! I also love board games haha. I am an older soul at heart, treasure the 1950s/60s/early 70s era homes, decor, design, etc. Thanks for sharing your cute home!
Yes. We also use a projector.
I personally find your home to be so cool. And that price makes it even better. I’m a fan of smaller homes and using no more than what’s needed. Congratulations on your growing family.
Thanks so much! Yes, we like small homes because they are easier to maintain and faster to clean! Having less stuff helps too! We’ll see how we adjust, as our family grows.
@@gojereme I'm curious how you found a house at that cost? I have looked for a frames house and asking price is 100k and up. There is a company who sells the kit for 55,000, then you buy the land too, plus the sewer buil costs, that adds up. How did you find your house?
@@faithbranshaw6574 Sounds like they did some renovations.
This house is gorgeous as a millennial with college debt I’m very inspired by this achievable dream home
Thank you Priscilla!
Same here!
Also the property taxes are probably low too which is an added bonus.
$56,000 is an incredible price. This would cost $800,000 + in NYC.
I really like your house.
Thanks! 🙏🏽
Same for so. Cal😏
only 800k? That would cost 2 million in canada.
In the UK you wouldn't be able to find a property like this that cheap anywhere in the country.
@@honkhonk8009 i also live in canada. Canada is big and i’m sure you could get it for 400k or less actually. Even 250-300k…Think countryside. Still not 50k but not 2 million 😅 it’s insane that they found that for that price! They said it was a fixer-upper so maybe they also put LOT of work in it.
My husband and I purchased a 968sq foot home right before we got married and we still live in it 2 kids and 21 years later. The key to living small is to purchase only things that have multiple purposes, keep things simple and to realize that bigger is not always better. It looks like you guys already have that down pat, congratulations.
I will say that living in a small space can definitely come with challenges once you have children, but now that mine are both young adults I realize I would never change a thinng, even if I could.. All 4 of us have such a close relationship, enjoy spending our free time together and treat each other with love and respect. I am so grateful that we chose to live within our means and live small.
In the UK that would be considered a fairly large home.

You and your wife have done right. My husband and I sold a New York City home and bought a 3 bed 1 bath home for cash in Ohio over 10 years ago. Best thing ever.
Right on! what's your favorite city/area in Ohio? I need to visit!
@@gojereme You need to go to Northwest Ohio. Bryan is the home of Dum Dum suckers and Etch a Sketch used to be made there at Ohio Art. You used to be able to tour Spanglers before the pandemic, but I'm not sure now. Plus you should check out Sauder Village in Archbold. Erie Sauder is the founder of Sauder Woodworking which makes the RTA furniture. Well, he started Sauder Village to tell how the first settlers in northwest Ohio settled the black swamp. By the way, you should go to Jackson, MI, to Andy's Pizza. They have the best pizza ever and then when you're done you can go to All Star Dairy for desert. Now, I'm getting homesick. 😂
@@TruckDriver2005 thanks for the recommendations! Definitely need to check out Jackson then cuz I love me some pizza :)
Kudos to you and your wife for making the bold choice to make a big move. Beautiful job on updating your new home!
I appreciate that, Julie! Thanks for watching!
Ya’ll living my dream! 😂 We are in Utah and trying to buy a house for the first time and not much under $400K and it’s crazy! I can not believe you all in on a house for 60k!!!
Thanks, Taylor! Utah is beautiful, we drove through and stayed a couple nights in Salt Lake City. But prices are crazy high there too! You’d be surprised that the Midwest has quite a few homes below 100k. I didnt believe until I visited Michigan for the first time.
I live in Utah too. These prices are insane! I live in Southern Utah and we have SO many new builds and they are huge houses. There's a section I call "Hollywood Hills" because the houses are all no less than 4,000 square feet and are at very least $750,000. Our traffic has tripled and we have traffic jams on I 15 now for no reason. It's now a mini California
@@lydiadewberry7328 seriously!! They say it’s because people from California are all coming here!
@@taylorshaudean people are saying that about every place. But there aren't enough people moving out of california to be driving inflation in every state in america. It's because huge real estate firms are buying up cheap property in any state they can get it, often paying 10s of thousands above asking in cash because real estate/land is a sure fire investment/store of value. Similar thing happened in 08.
@@stephonb12 Trust me - they are moving to Arizona by the thousands! My house went up 100K during the pandemic. Not exaggerating!🌵😳
You guys did an amazing job. Your home, no longer your house, is warm, cozy and very inviting. Love your kitchen. You can see your pride in how you talk and that is assume. Slow down just a little in your 'delivery' you seemed a little nervous yet did an awesome job at not dwelling to long on an area, BEST OF LUCK going forward. I look forward to seeing your photography displayed and look forward to future videos.
Thanks so much! I can admit I talk little too fast when I get excited.
@@gojereme When I'm happy & excited, I talk a little fast, too, and I always have lots to say. Haha! Loved your home and your presentation. 💕

My husband and I do rehabbing and I will say that you guys have done a PHENOMINAL job!!! You should be proud of yourselves.
Less space, less cleaning!! So in love with your house, dream house material
There are flat screen tv's that look like a picture. Samsung makes them, they are pricey, but maybe you can hang a tv, and make like doors that slide over it that have a design or picture on it.
Yes, we did look into those TVs. We’re considering it! Thanks for the tip 🙏🏽
@@gojereme You are welcome, I had seen one on UA-cam recently, and when you said something about wanting a TV there I remembered it and thought it would be perfect.
Tv are overrated ! Don’t clutter your beautiful home with it!! Less is more! I don’t have one !
I’ve see where they use barn type doors that slide Together that cover the tv. You can buy a kit and do it yourself. That would look nice on that wall
@@starrynight2600 Barn doors would also fit with the character of the table & chairs. I think it would look great :)
All Glory to God

Your home is stunningly beautiful! I love the light, clean, open, airy, minimalist aesthetic. This is so inspirational. Well done, and good for you! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Hey thanks so much! Love keeping it simple, especially in a small space.
Especially that floating stair rail !

Just found your channel as my partner and I are looking at A frame houses. Thanks for the great content, also on a similar plan, creating the live we love in this moment , almost debt free ( followed Dave Ramsey’s method). Thanks for the inspiration, perfect upgrades and changes to give a modernized feel!
Thanks so much. Sometimes simple touches can go a long way! Good luck in your journey 👍🏽

Just to be clear, I went in on a deal with someone to purchase this duplex. We each paid 56k so I own 50%, so that is only why I only show and give a tour of one side. We each get one garage too. Sometimes you have to get creative to live the life you want now without debt. You’d be surprised that there is quite a few homes in the Midwest that are still at an affordable price.
Please tell me more about how you did this & what income changes you made?
So $56,000 was the total cost of the home or the remodel?
My 44 year old son is thinking about moving to Utah from Seattle.

bro I'm such a huge fan of this. My wife and I just bought land in utah to do the same thing!
Right on, Man. Utah is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been too. Cant wait to go back. Good luck on your journey, my friend!
You can paint the bath/ shower also. They make a spray paint specifically for that. Works great and super easy!
I love how excited he is about his home! It’s beautiful
I love this. We live in a converted schoolbus right now and we love it but we’ve been thinking about getting an Aframe for a while. I love how open this is. Congratulations you guys. We subscribed and hit the bell.
Hey Ash and Summer! Oh wow! We considered that too, just a bit too small for us. We are pretty comfortable with 1000 square ft, but I imagine we may need something a little bigger as our family grow. Totally try to build or find an Aframe if that’s what you want though! Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful home! But even more importantly what a beautiful debt free life! Well done!
Good luck as you move to the next phase with your dear new little baby boy! Blessings!
I am so amazed, I would move in right away. We live in Germany, standard /decent houses are around 400.000 Dollar. We decided not to go in debt for that. But we bought a Volkswagen T6.1 Campervan for 70.000 to travel a lot instead. Unbelievable that we could have bought a house for that prize in Michigan. And a beautiful one as well.
wow. It's getting expensive everywhere.
Nice! We considered van life as well, but wanted something a little more permanent. So that is one reason we had to look outside of our state for other options and found cheaper housing in Michigan.
I tried living in Michigan, not seeing the sun half of the year and clouds all the time messed up my mental and physical health. Now im back in Cali and the weather is 85+ degree....... I feel like i walk in heaven when i go 4 my walks.
Cant beat California weather, for sure. But I enjoy all the seasons here. I see the sun here more than I did in the northwest!
The aesthetic looks more “retro” then “midevil” to me. Pretty nice nostalgia!
Definitely some retro colors in the mix!
"Midevil"? Do you mean "mid-century" or "medieval"?
I definitely wouldn't think retro 💖
This made my whole day. You both are such a joy an inspiration. Awesome. Thank you for your sharing your light and allowing us into your life. You are sensible, balanced and shining a light on what matters: family and love. That’s what makes a home not things. We need more of this. Thank you so much for sharing. 💜 Namaste Beautiful Souls. Congrats on your new baby. Amazing.
Cocoa, you're so sweet - thank you so much!
Maybe y'all could try a sliding door in the bathroom to gain space. I really love your home and the neutral tones
Thanks for sharing this. I really admire you and your wife's wisdom of not even wanting a TV, and choosing to climb out of debt. That's so great. You commented that it looked plain, but to me it looks elegant, simple, and clean. Even though your self-proclaimed strategy was to paint everything white and change the flooring, it really looks excellent. In particular the staircase railing, and the railing on the second floor, look so minimalistic. The plants, curtains, and railings also do a great job of accenting this place.
That rug really ties the whole room together.
All Grace’s idea on that purchase 🙌🏽
Lovely home! That price is crazy. My only concern would be the stairs for the little one once they're here. Congrats on your first child and this new chapter!
Thanks so much! Yea, we might move upstairs or just move to another place when he turns 1. We’ll see.
Ballastrade wires could be an easy fix for that little challenge.
I've always loved A frames. Very cool!
Thanks! There’s definitely a lot to love about them.
Thanks for sharing your house! I am happy to hear you don't have a tv & you don't want one. The fact that you don't want a tv speaks volumes about how well you and your wife get a long. I am impressed. Congrats on your first baby! Like& subscribed! I love what you did to the house! It is beautiful!
Love it! I'm looking to buy even outside of the US... I'd like open land though for privacy and also to build a sustainable home with rain water collection and greenhouse.
Awesome! Do it!
We bought a six acre peninsula, in a lake, next to ski areas in Quebec, about a long day’s drive east of Detroit and north of NYC, for about $200k. You can get a lot of value in Canada for US dollars if you like winter.
Try Panama. Tons of videos of expats moving there. Weather is perfect up in the mountains.
You and your wife are an inspiration!! I love your channel I subscribed yesterday and I have made up my mind, I’m studying in my house, that’s paid for!
Love the minimalism.
This family radiates good vibes. Amazing. 🙏
Amazing home, you have given it such an open and bright chapter!
*My dream is to do my art full time, and have an A frame one day...
it is so scary, but seeing this is inspiring~
Thank you Shannon! Don’t give up on your dream. But think outside the box and make a plan to make it happen!
Definitely love the beams too Grace!! House seems so beautiful!! Nice and cozy yet very open! Once again it's awesome to be here!! Nice to meet you guys!! 💕👍big love from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Good for you two! And congrats! Your home looks great. That's pretty amazing for what you paid in today's day and age. I'm on this path to minimalism too and think differently these days about space, needs vs wants. What about one of those corner benches with a rectangular table (maybe a bit larger to fit more family/friends). All the best to you both and the new addition.
Thank you! I know the price is pretty incredible, but there’s cheap homes in up and coming areas all around the US that you don’t expect. I lived on the west coast my whole life, so I didn’t know what was out there until I visited the mid-west.
Also, good for you! Once the needs and wants get established, everything just becomes easier because you know what you value. What would you say is your biggest challenge pursing minimalism?
@@gojereme I think the biggest challenge is where to start!! Wish I had started earlier in my life...but better late than never. :)
@@graemeh6345 Definitely - its never to late to start changing for the better. I'll make a video on it soon. How to retire early and where to start.

I love your home, it looks so cozy and warm. I love the A frame style, very unique.
U say three bedroom - we didn’t get to see the other rooms 💖😭😭 looks great!!!!!
Probably upstairs or is it a loft?
So, we actually live in Saginaw, MI! Really neat to see what you were able to do with this affordable place as we are currently house-hunting and the market is awful. This gives me hope for remodeling though if we decide to go that route! On a side note, we are hoping to eventually move OUT to OR. Crazy to see someone wanting to move to this area.
Hey Kelli - or should i say neighbor! ;) Market is super hot right now. I bought this place last June at the height of pandemic.
Portland OR is beautiful, we just didn’t want to hustle so hard just to be there. We are happier doing what we want to do and love the church we go to in Saginaw! It’s called Saginaw Valley United! You should totally check us out.
Great job! Once that baby comes you'll be grateful for no huge mortgage and no TV. Congrats!!
Thanks! Totally!
I love your home and.. of course.. the beams! You could hang a tapestry/thinner rug/woven blanket on that wall behind the table, it might bring some cozy texture!! Can't wait to watch more of your channel!

If your wife likes lots of storage, you could install upper cabinets below the shelves in the kitchen. They are much shallower (usually 12" deep) and shouldn't extend out much further than the shelves. My husband and I are "former" Michiganders. We grew up there but now live in the South.
This is beautiful . I'm admiring all the way from 🇿🇦
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Would love to do something like this. We bought a house in the Bronx NYC. A few years in - about 5. But man- this vid looks like peace and freedoms and vitality and fulfillment.
When he gets some kids, he’s going to change that stair rail with its sharpened point (youch!).
I Subbed you all the way. I did the same thing I had enough of a job that was killing me and went from east cost to west coast on a trip. Changed my life!!!
Awesome!
I want a house like yours! Oh and that luxe edition Monopoly. 😃
Haha..make it happen! And you can find that monopoly luxe on Amazon. My wife randomly found it at Home Goods though.
the couch color doesn't go with the rug. LOVE that you made the house interior white, because paneling gives a claustrophobic effect - especially if not white clap board type.
Looks great! Love that your living debt free and yeah I agree with the other comments about reglazing or resurfacing the shower to white but I would definitely pay a professional for that
Thank you! Definitely considered glazing, but the tub is 50 years old and leaking a bit in the crawl space. Not sure if there is a small crack somewhere. Just going to redo it all for peace of mind with some help from a professional.
@@gojereme sensible to spend once on a good quality product. You're still young but a good choice should see you out.
I like the way you've opened up the space with a light colour scheme. A couple of strategic walls in light pastels, like the big rug, could prive useful with children about. You'll quickly find out which ones. Lol
Speaking of children. The rail on the banister looks like it has gaps big enough for a toddler to get through. Glass or extra uprights would solve that without blocking the open feel.
Good life move. Enjoy.
@@michellebyrom6551 thanks Michelle!
Trust me when your kid comes along you will definitely need a TV , especially with a toddler if you want any peace at all or free time. I have a feeling that you will change your mind!
You’re going to have to seriously baby~proof the upstairs!
Yea, we’ll see what we do. Either just move to a new place when he gets old enough to walk, move ourselves upstairs, or buy some solid gates.
@jereme it'll be as soon as bub crawls that it'll need attention. As a parent I had a heart attack 🤣 Stunning home without a child in it 😄

But l‘m also in the Position that I might be able to spend this kind of money and for this A-frame cabin I would in an instant. It’s gorgeous and big enough for me.

@@gojereme Sounds like a Dream. All the best to you and your growing Family
I agree about location. My husband and I live in Austin where the jobs are, so unfortunately this isn’t feasible for us. We couldn’t even get land for this price in a 50 mile radius, but I love the idea of moving to a rural area someday if work becomes all remote. It’s just much easier to climb the corporate ladder by being physically present at work and not just doing zoom calls with your boss.

Lovely house! Just a suggestion. Since you now have a baby, for safety sake you will need to space the balusters on the railing upstairs 4” on center. And you need to set balusters on the stair treads to keep your child from falling. He will be walking and crawling in no time.
Personally I think this house is AMAZING! The green shower insert can be painted if you want something to last a few years. If this were my place I’d definitely change out the back door in the laundry room with a French style door that has a large window in it.
Keeping children from falling with the stairs and railing would be priority one though. It’s really a simple Scandinavian but beautiful home! So happy for you both!

Your not alone in these thoughts. My parents relocated us from Vancouver WA to Eugene Or in the mid 90's. The 3 bd rm, 2 bath 1800 sq home they bought was 130 grand.(1970s home in a suburb) some updates have definitely been completed....but now in 2021 it's worth 300? Where did you get that rug? Name of it? I absolutely love the house. We have a 1,238 sq ft 76 ranch that we’re remodeling. We found out we were expecting in 2018, sold our big house and downsized.
