Summer of Night is packed away in a box, ready to be read someday. It's right next to Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. I doubt the themes are similar, but the 80's "bicycle squad" Stranger Things-esque appeal sure is.
Oh, a book review. NICE! I myself am not a horror fan (no hate its just not something I enjoy but still valuable genre) but I am happy to hear the good and bad from your experience. And hope you find some good reading Prof.
I went on a Stephen King kick back in high school. After reading so many of them I realized how his stories get very repetitive after awhile. I’m interested in Ghost Stories. I’ll have to look it up.
I just read Floating Dragon, I loved it. Great review. I just started Shadowland, I love it already. I'm planning on reading Dan Simmons, I hear Carion Comfort is great and I'm interested in The Terror too.
My biggest issue with Summer of Night is that the reader doesn't get to spend any time with the antagonists, except when they're preying on one of the boys from the main group. The bad guys just pop up whenever the story needs some tension, and then they promptly disappear again. They have little to no dialogue when they do show up, and Simmons never gives any narrative insight into what their perspectives might be besides being implying that they're compelled by some vague, ancient curse. That just makes for paper thin villains, and this book really does suffer for it. And the plot takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to gain traction. Unfortunately, I can't say I loved this book

I wouldn't describe myself as a horror fan, either. But I do love a well-done good vs. evil story.

I know what you mean. Oh, and it's just singular, Ghost Story by Peter Straub, a great winter read.
