When the boys were young, on brisk fall mornings, we would go to the zoo and take along a flask of homemade hot cocoa and animal crackers. We would look at all the animals and then find a quiet place to sit with our cocoa and animal crackers.
We plan day trips, and the cooler is packed with the drinks, sandwiches, cheese, summer sausage, fruit, etc. we avoid spending money at excessively expensive vendors. Freezing half the drink container and adding more liquid before we go is a great way to keep drinks cold.
Another trick,use a clean ponytail holder to close pillowcase. You can also,instead of pillowcase,use a plastic coated,reusable grocery tote.they are in fact machine washable.also handy for those dirty clothes,or meat,if you.happen to buy/eat it. You can use old yoga mats as car floor mats,and can also cut to size to keep throw rugs from sliding,keeps a cutting board in place. Dish washing tip i learned . Either wash all cutlery first,or set in a separate container.empty.do not ever,ever,ever toss sharp knices in murky,soapy water.this is exactly how you slice your hand.
I consider myself a pretty expert picnicker. I do almost all of those hacks. I even got my plastic at the end of season. I can add one more: a backpack cooler, which carries all your dedicated picnic supplies. I got mine from REI and it looks more like a regular 'skateboarder backpack.' This way, you can be handsfree. I even take the cooler backpack on vacations--domestic and international.
I had four kids and we picnicked all the time, maybe at a stately home or an animal reserve. These places always have a cafe but trying to find something that the four of them would eat took up so much time. So we took our own. That way I could make sure there was something they all liked. For a treat before we went home we had a cornet from the ice cream van. I also took a big car picnic to have on a long drive to a favourite holiday in Scotland. We would stop at the prettiest service stations and everybody went to the loo for free!
Take the scent out of plastic, clothes etc by soaking in cool water & bicarbonate of soda or sprinkle it on and leave over night. This has saved many items including 'Tupperwares', clothes and shoes. Thanks for the fantastic tips and videos they're really helpful and fun to watch.
Oh, I love that you made it a family tradition! Your basket is so lovely! We don't own one, but I think it seems worth picking up. This would be a great tradition to start with my children. Great tip on protecting the car from spills, we still have one of those from my son, I will be sure to hold onto it! I like your sauce hack, we have saved a few baby foods jars from my son and we tend to take small liquid items that way but there is always the possibility of a leak!

Yep, I remember as a kid, we never left home to go on a picnic or a road trip of any length without a bag containing a wet washcloth. With four kids, Mom never knew when someone would need their face wiped.
I still have one of the waterproof crib mats from when my kids were babies, (now it's 25 years old). I would love to find another one, but have been unable to find them anywhere. Do you have a link where these can be purchased now?
Gosh, I never thought about them not being available any more. The ones I use are probably as old as yours. Our oldest son is 24 and our youngest will be 13 in March. I, honestly can't remember which of the boys I got the crib liners with. I have a theory that I lost memory cells with each child's birth. So, after 4 boys I have few left. LOL!
@@UndertheMedian Yeah, we probably bought them around the same time period. For the life of me I can't imagine why they wouldn't still make these. I gave my mom one and told her you never know with old age when this might come in handy. I think it's an any age useful item. I had a few smaller ones back in the day, that I would have kept had I known I wouldn't be able to find them anymore. I just felt I should pass them along to others with babies. I used cloth diapers as well. I found an amazing deal on the Gerber velcro ones at Big Lots and bought all I would need from my first child to the second. I loved that the rubber pants were made onto them. I still used the ones with pins as well. I wish more ppl realized they really aren't hard to use, and very convenient. The same as breast feeding. I call breastfeeding the lazy moms way, LOL. It was so easy, and no bottles to wash. No getting up at night, no running out of formula. Bottles were too much work for me, LOL.

But, literally days before I gave birth to our oldest I was praying about finding cloth diapers at a price we could afford. The next morning there was an ad in the paper: "Brand new in the box cloth diapers: $5 a dozen." I could not believe it! They came in small, medium, and large sizes. Velcro closures. I bought 10 dozen assorted sizes and they lasted me through two of our boys. All I needed to buy was the plastic pants, which I found (I think) at Big Lots.

I had the disposable the hospital sent me home with. Cloth are expensive up front, but save a ton of money. I was so ecstatic when I found the mother load at Big Lots, LOL. That was when Big Lots actually had store buy outs. I love reading these kinds of posts.

My mother had colorful plastic picnic plates with compartments. Each plate was a different color so you knew which plate was yours.
You can buy little travel sets with bottles in them and the standard red and yellow condiment bottles at Dollar 🌳. Love your preparedness!!

I recommend a zippered pillow protector in place of the pillow case.
I'm 30 years old. I use a wet washcloth instead of a wet wipe to clean my kids face and hands all the time. I guess I'm an old fashion momma too 😄

I use cloth napkins as Kleenex and napkins. I also use wash cloths for paper towels.
Condiments.you can buy clear travel bottles at dollar tree,and use that.plus,reusable
