Same gear method was good for old days cars. But now gearbox have advanced and most of the time it can ignored. But on extreme downhill combination of engine breaking and brakes should be used. Excessive use of engine breaking can fry up your clutch plate as well.
@@vinayakpatil355 exactly, engine, transmission and clutch are more important and their repair labor is also very high. moreover the disc pads are dirt cheap (compared to engine, gearbox and clutch) hardly front disc pads replacement will cost you around 2-3k (max 4-5k for bigger vehicles). I don't use too much of engine breaking on downhill because its eroding your clutch plate I like to use little brakes instead of heavy engine breaking.
Well explained. I drive mostly in mountains. One thing which experienced drivers should also follow from this video is --- GIVE WAY TO UPHILL VEHICLES. Many people fail to do it.
No additional Inputs brother. 80% important points covered in this video. Rest 20% points of practical learning will be a continuous process throughout one's life. I am right now in Almora, Uttrakhand. Will be heading towards Delhi/NCR in a couple of days. Thanks 4 reminding me my own experience & learning once again. Keep it up Ashu.
If you're driving an automatic, it's wise to avoid D mode on hills especially while coming down. Manual mode will lock torque converter and will give marginal engine braking support, not close to stick shift though.
Ashish, you have covered this topic well. I would like add two more points. 1, carry your personal recovery kit( Snach strap, Bow Shackles etc) so that some can help you if get stuck in the mud. 2, Once you are of the Bituminous Roads( Tar road) and you are Dirt road it is better to reduce the tyre pressure so that the contact surface of the wheel increase and traction improves.
Really helpful and to the point. Switching off AC has two fold effect- more engine power as well as you need to keep windows open. This gives good situational awareness as you can easily hear the horn from incoming traffic which is really important at blind turns. Also I generally turn down volume of music if not mute it at all.
Good on AB. One more point can be. U can plan your overtaking through google map.. Whenever u need to overtake look for straight road on map and clear traffic through eyes. And second point- give respect and preference to front coming trench side vehicle and if u have space don't be stubborn to back off. This will also save u from road rage and traffic jams.
It's really useful to understand the few pointers one needs to keep in mind, while driving through the curves nd turns of the ever winding roads of hills!👍
Engine brake zyada use Karne se engine kharab Hota Hy and brakes kharab hojaye to asani se change karsakte ho and less cost than repairing engine. So use breaks wisely.
While the traffic is stalled, people nowadays have a tendency to jump on to the lane for opposite traffic instead of waiting in their own lane, which creates the chaos. Nice and informative video 👍
Thank you Ashish....now i have 7000km of driving experience.... I returned from Darjeeling trip yesterday.... Your tips helped me a lot.....it was a great experience overall....planning for a Spiti trip(not on my car) .... So, I was watching your Spiti videos again for route and hotels..... Good wishes to you and your family
Meine to itni hills par road trips nahi kari. But concepts saare clear hai, I'm engineering student i think that's why i know.... All about and knowledge given by my father too.
Thanks brother, aapke suggestion acha mila ki rukne ke baad upar chade waqt hand brack ka use karna chahiye na ki clutch with accelerators ka, me wo galti karta tha.
The 2 most helpful videos on your channel. This one and the other... camping in India, safe or not. I hope you make more informative videos like these which normally nobody does. Thanks.
Hi Ashish. Good video as always. Just one suggestion. On the hill, when you are on the curve, you should always use high beam and as soon as you see the on coming vehicle you should use dipper and low beam.
i guess all the points are really obvious but yet important thanks a lot the only thing bugging me is how do drive smoothly like a pro without any jerk even on steep hills..
I have climbed several mountains like in Karnataka siradi ghat charmudi ghat mulliangiri hills Bandipur sathyamangla ghat in ooty hill stations and I have travel several times but still there is no end to learn practice makes perfect
Thanks for this very helpful video. Dou you use a 4x4 Scorpio? Any tips for driving front wheel drive vehicles on hills? All the "compact SUVs" are front wheel driven these days.
This was all theory.... Thank you for this.... Very good video..... Next time you are in the hills please make a driving video , that will help to understand the problems and the solutions for the same... A very short video will do....uphill start stop traffic.... Stay safe and good wishes to you and your family
Sure will do but to get actual real world practical experience, you'll have to drive yourself. Untill you do it yourself its all theory. So it's better you start practicing. Best of luck...😊
Yes ... True..... I have just driven 1200 km and it is lockdown here in west bengal.... I am preparing to go to the hills...small ones ... Like Ayodhya hills in purulia , west bengal I have plans to visit north bengal , Darjeeling.....but before that I must add some more kilometres to my experience....what do you suggest? In future make plans for Darjeeling, Sikkim.....you will love it....and we will get some more great videos to watch
While negotiating high hill switch of ac and it will give you extra power. As thumb rule never indulge racing with other at any cost. Never give pass to other at turns unless roads ahead is clear. At hills give hand signal as much as possible. Please stop if you feel sleepy and just nap for 30 minutes. Be calm cool and courteous while driving always. Fast driving is not bravery consistent speed will not make you tired.
You touch the relevant topics like lane discipline, proper parking etc, which are unfortunately neglected or forgotten by many. That's actually cool. I have been couple of times on Ooty and Munnar Ghat roads. Followed the tips you mentioned.
We have driven to opposite side I mean from Killar to Pangi on our way down from Sach Pass. You can check the video on my channel. Trip to sach pass part-2...awesome adventure.....thanks for the appreciation
While giving pass in a narrow road in mountain with one side having valley of 1000 feets you need to know the location of your tyres and second thing is doing reverse in one way road or giving pass to the other vehicle😊
I too folowing these rules.Ashish ji aap daily vlogs bna sakte ho office jate hue ghar kaam.15-20 min ka video only.pls think about it.Love from kota Rajasthan.
hey aaj uphill me mere sath aisa hua ki gadi chad hi nahi paayi full race dene pe bhi samajh ni aara kya reason tha ek to AC on tha or 2nd gear tha is liye can you guide please
In case you are moving downhill and gathering speed due to failure of brakes and ineffectiveness of the engine, a good way to reduce speed or even stop is to drag the side of the car against the hewn side of the hill.

One thing my dad taught was use the same gear you climb up to come down..engine breaking is best and prevents overheating brakes 👍
Yup that's an awesome advice...Thanks for sharing....😊

Your brakes costs nothing in front of your engine and transmission. Choose wisely, live well, use both.
