Remembering a long gone, and well loved, store on Lincoln's City Square

- This video takes us back four times around City Square in the centre of Lincoln and reminds us of a well loved shop. A couple of the videos have been posted before, the other two are new.
C&A is a multinational chain of retail clothing stores that originated in the Netherlands. They started operating in the UK in 1922, and had 109 stores, but in 2000, due to competition from Tesco and Asda, as well as from expanding high street names such as H&M, Zara and Topshop, C&A announced its withdrawal from the British market. The last UK retail stores closed in 2001, and. Primark bought six C&A stores.
I don't have dates for when the Lincoln store opened and closed, but I think all the old photos in this video are from the 1980s or 90s?
The first of the four time shifts is looking across City Square with the Central Market on the left. The second is the view looking down from the old Co-op roof top car park. The third and fourth time shifts are both views from Mayfield Bridge.
Locals will know that Wilkinson, who occupied the same building after C&A left, have in turn also closed, and the property has been empty for a while.
What are your memories of C&A, I remember going there a few times and thinking it was pretty good?
I also remember the car park that was there before C&A store was built. My Gran used to work early mornings at the Wimpy (later became Poppins and is now The Greek Brothers) and I remember playing on the car park whilst she worked. I think there was also one of Lincoln's first nightclubs tucked away in the corner between the Boots store and Wimpy, AJs maybe?
Yes every spare piece of ground in the city centre was used as a car park at some point. I was never a night club person so can't remember exactly where AJs was, but you might be right about that :)
Certainly visited C&A far more often than ever I did "Wilko's". Such stated, once a driver, proximity (& cost) of parking became an issue. Tend to shop north/northeast & avoid the city center.. totally.
I think most of us are very selective about shopping in the city centre. I was just there with my son and the place is almost permanently gridlocked these days, cars are killing us in more ways than one :(

I assume you must be referring to the Woolworths store across the water from C&As, genuinely missed by thousands of people across the country.
I've done several videos of Woolies already, but this is my first of C&A :)
